It does make sense for Californians and DWN is a local commercial nursery. We have very small backyards in the Bay and it allows people to plant several different trees instead of just one or two max. I personally have 3 plums/pluots planted this way and it works for me perfectly. However, I think it is not necessary if you have a large backyard.

I am doing a hybrid of this method. Planting different varieties but not in the same hole but close together. Most average gardeners aren’t going to graft even if it is easy.

I limit this style to 2 trees. It's easier to manage than 4 different trees. Both trees started from seeds. A Pomegranate tree and a peach tree that was later grafted to include nectarine and plum. 2 years ago, I hard prune the peach tree to 3 major scaffold at 3 feet or lower. Then, I grafted onto it last fall and and this year. As far as the Pom, it was pruned here and there. No major pruning was done on it. This year both trees flowered. So, far only 1 nectarine are holding and 2 female Pom. There was a lot of flower on the Pom, however most of them were male and they will naturally drop off.

So, I was thinking of planting multiple trees in the same hole, but fusing the trunks together and shaping the branches with wire for air flow similar to a clumping bonsai. Not sure if it will work, but I think it will be fun to try.

I was thinking about trying that but decided not to. I definitely need to start grafting. Thanks for sharing 💕

Grafting is much better from almost every aspect but I would think the grafts would need protection in winter during cooler temps for the first few years

This is great to know. Can you do something on multi-grafting strategy and pruning?

Grafting is nice but your also talking about having a higher percentage of success by combining in one hole. You also have one trunk providing the nutrients, water, etc. for multiple branches. Also if one fails you can cut it out without destroying the other trees.

Can you grow multiple varieties of apples, persimmons, or avocados? I’ve heard these are too big, but I thought I’d ask!!!

Did you apricots make it? I am not sure if mine made it or not in South Jersey.

They did! Many flowers died and fell off, but some actually made it.

Great advice. Should I use Dwarf fruit trees for this method? Or does it not matter what type?

Thanks for the video! How far away is the next set of trees from the 4-in-1 planting?

    • @RossRaddi

      About 2 ft I think.

@@RossRaddi whoa! Mine are 3 ft apart (a 3-in-1 and a 2-in-1 planting) and people keep telling me it's too close. Would you do 2 ft again if you could start over?
BTW, has anyone ever told you that you look like Sebastian Stan?
