it's weird I've been watching a lot of these kinds of videos and some of the ways these interactions that are stalkery start out don't really register my head right off the bat as something I would have probably freak out about if I were in that situation. Cuz I'm American and over here people are so social with random strangers they'll strike up a conversation with someone they don't know and like hang out with them sometimes, especially in the southern part of the United States. So if something like that happened to me in a foreign country I would have registered it as though they wanted to be my friend, because that is just what I am used to and probably wouldn't have thought twice about the fact that I'm in a country where people don't typically behave that way and that I should freak out it probably would have been an after thought but not my first thought if I were in that situation. This sorta makes me worried about traveling a bit.
Yeah I am usually a very friendly person and can talk to strangers no problems, but it feels different when it comes to these strange people , like something seems off right away and you just can’t feel comfortable 😕😕😕

Thank you so much! It was a bit messy that day but I am glad you like it!
Mm those situations are so tricky because I tend to find that the person isn't doing anything overtly inappropriate or threatening (aside from the guy who grabbed you around the waist) and they probably just have terrible social skills, so it's hard to find the right words in the moment to tell them to leave you alone, but it still really freaks you out.
I just need to learn how to be more assertive cause I don't want to sound rude but then on the other hand if you don't say it with a bit of anger in ur voice they don't seem yo realise that they are making you uncomfortable :/
Exactly! I'm the same, I don't want to be rude in case they're just lonely and weird but actually just saying 'you are making me uncomfortable. You need to leave' firmly isn't rude at all.
Plus it means that if they then don't leave you can feel totally justified in getting louder and angrier.
I need to memorize that phrase for those situations!
You are in your right of sounding rude, I mean, even if they are lonely and whatever, they are invading your personal space, they are making you feel uncomfortable. (Just my opinion)
A weird guy once kept staring at me on the train. He started talking to me and asked me where I was from. The guy smelled like alcohol and seemed to be drunk so, I didn’t think of it. Also, the guy tried to ask my station and I told him that “I am sorry but, I do not share that information.” He kept asking me and I said the same thing. I tried to also confuse him while being polite as possible because you never yell at a drunk man or else they may attack you. He told me his stop was from here to here and I said, “oh I see”. Then, before leaving and bumping into people, he gave me a huge box of cookies! 😱🤔 I didn’t want to waste them and checked if there was a strange smell but, I ate them at home lol. But, just be polite and don’t give any information. If you can, it’s best to accept the gifts and report to the police. If it’s food, check to see if it’s safe. Guys just do that to flirt sometimes but, at night time, it’s creepy. You meet many weirdos on the train. I said thank you and it was nice to meet you. He left and he didn’t stalk me. Though he did want to go to Kinshichō together with me and I said, “I am sorry. No thank you. I have things to do.” Saying this line will show you have more important things to do than to worry about weird men.
In Japan, usually, people still respect your opinions even if they stalk or are just weird to you. I said no because I assumed he had a wife. Since he had a gift. So, instead I took the gift because I’m worried if I say no, he may threaten me or attack me. 🤔

I know Japan is safer than the U.S but I have heard of the prevalent misogyny in Japan as well as the deadly stalking. Ellie Im so sad you've had to experience this many times. It has happened to me as well and I know how disturbing it is. @@Foxontheroad 一ついいこと教えてあげる。日本人は臆病だったり、自分に関係ない事に関わりを持ちたくないって人が結構いるから「Help me 」とか、「痴漢」とか叫んでも知らないふりをされることがある。そんな時にみんなが注目してくれる魔法の言葉「火事だ～！」昔から木造住宅と暮らして来た日本人は火事に敏感。暗い道なんかで誰かに襲われたりしたら「火事だ～！」って叫べと親からよく言われました。きっと誰かが声を掛けてくれる。

So sorry this is happening to you Ellie. My understanding in Japan the self defense rule is limited to you can only defend yourself if your life is threatened. And being harrassed or stalked your options are to walk away to decelerate the situation and if that doesn't work get to somewhere public and call the police. Always trust your gut instinct and shut down any possible threat I know its kinda of rude but being rude is better that being found in a ditch somewhere. If you were in the States I would advise never going out alone without a friend or two like Smith@Wesson, Sam Colt, Pietro Beretta, and the like. It sounds like to me honestly not trying to be the big meanie but you are living in a country were basically the duty to retreat rule exist. So my advice is if you feel uncomfortable that someone is invading your space tell them right off the bat not doing so is giving the invader confidence and they will continue. Its your safety we're talking about here so be careful kiddo. Sorry this message so long 🙂
Thank you, Will! I still feel very safe here in Japan, but yes, weirdos can be found everywhere. When I lived in Kyoto before, I have never encountered a stalker or anyone like that but here in Tokyo there are all kinds of people. In general though, I still consider it to be safe, although I do prefer going somewhere with some company :) thank you for caring :)

For real, almost the same thing happened to me in a game center and another one in the subway, but both men rubbed me 😑 (I don’t know if it’s the right verb, ils se sont frottés contre moi). Both were creepy, the 1st one smelled real bad and breathed loudly, the 2nd one was 40-50 and I was in high school, when I said to him WTF, he smiled at me 🤮
I don’t think I look(ed) like a gay but whatever, it doesn’t matter, they obviously didn’t give a sh1t, I don’t think ppl like that see you as a person.
But even if I was gay, I wouldn’t say « Omg ! They’re my princes charming ! Their approaches are so classy ! I can see stars, hear birds singing »
They weren’t scared... it surprised me a lot, and both areas were crowded when it happened, they didn’t stop until I spoke loudly, they ran away at this moment
Anyway, what I’m trying to say is even if these things happened to me (a man), I can’t say to a woman « I know what you feel », even if they « rubbed » me, it’s definitely not the same. I still can’t compare these experiences with what women have to deal with everyday, and seriously, it’s 10 times worse in Paris.

It's so expensive tho! TT Yeah, I hope that this kind of behaviour ill disappear and girls/women won´t have to be uncomfortable when visiting different places by themselves. N.B.: well, if you are a busy person, I don’t suggest you to buy any console. In 3-4 years, I just turned on the PS4 only once, such a smart expense 🙄 (FF7 Remake during the lockdown). But if you want something better than smartphone games (like a Switch), there’s a big supermarket near or in Tokyo, I think I saw this on tv, they have cheap consoles, clothes, etc. When I say cheap, I mean super cheap ! Unbeatable...
15 years ago or more, Tokyo’s subway was well known to be overcrowded and unfortunately... for its gropers (rubbers? I’m not sure), but it seems the situation is getting better, we hear less about them, some measures were taken and some Japanese are less quiet than before, they also have different apps. And I think Japan is taking the stalking more seriously these last years.
The thing I really hope is that this kind of person (even if they feel very lonely) will ask themselves the good questions, which can make them (or a society) change their look and attitude on women, I’m sure it will happen, history already proved it.
