Do You Draw with the CORRECT Grip?

- Other than the textbook "Classic Grip," there are many ways to hold a drawing utensil -- How do you hold a pen or pencil? Is it an unconventional grip? Does it give you arthritis? Well, here are some of the grips used by the top artists in the world. Each one has its own pros and cons.
Whether you're drawing right-handed or left-handed, I'm sure you've heard of the Dynamic Tripod, or the Digital Lateral Quadrupod grips... But have you heard of the more idiosyncratic styles? How about the CRAB GRAB? Sure, such a name sounds like some sort of joke or parody, but it's not. These unique drawing styles are real and we should all be making use of them. Don't let anyone tell you that the way you hold a pencil is the worst thing imaginable. Hold your pen and draw the way you want even if it doesn't work very well and makes your arm tired.
More art vidz coming soon
This video has healed a small, broken part of me that felt unworthy. Thank you.
the way you draw is so cool dude
Shhh! He is serious about his grip though
Best video on youtube
your grip should be called "bet you've never seen this before grip"
I actually use a combination of a few of these grips known as the polish penguin fister
my classmates have always made fun of the way i hold the pencil , and i'm an artist too and this video made feel so good, i have always felt like there`s somtething wrong with me for holding the pencil the way i do, it`s the first time i see something like this, thank you
“don’t forget to ring.. the fucken thing”
Love this vid, learned so much!
Like your sense of humour! 🤘
1:28 thats the "You disshonoru the famiry gripu!"
This video kinda helped since I've had a recent confidence knock about how I hold my pen when I draw since its certainly not the correct way and its the way I've held my pen for 26 odd years so I think its a bit late for me to change that now. So yeah thanks I guess.
Well I'm trolling and making fun of everyone but it's true that the more helpful take away should be that the VAST majority of people don't hold pens "the right way"
Holly shit. this is the funniest video about art ever !!!
Those hand grips for drawing....I didn't know so many wierd drawing grips were done by people! 😄😂😃
god damn best ART VID ever
i use the 4 finger doozy grip!
dirty clutch
you have a really relaxing voice
ur a funny, i love this
short video with a great advice, thanks
I see all my fave artists doing the crab, and I can't for the life of me get my fingers to do it!!!!!!!!!!
Yep, the crap grab that's me
I like ur grip lol
YES i like it too ^^ what is your grip?
Now you got me checking my hand grip and it's....THE CLASSIC GRIP WOW!!!! YIPEEEE!!!!!!! 😄😘😄😘😄😘😃
SOO BORING! Why don't you start using the *dynamic* *overhand* *banger* *grip?*
@@STIMULUSVIDEO 😂😂😂😄😅🙃🙃!
I have that exact pen you used at the end of the video
They should not make fun of you because you draw better than them
I'm so grad for this. Mrs. Brown in first grade forced me to use my right hand. Because of that I write upside-down! She forced me to use a gripper.
These grips sound like something Kenny omega would think was cool in wrestling
Brilliant! ^_^ I agree, go with whatever works for you. I like the path of least resistance grip.
✏️👌 🤔
Wow, your grip is actually giving me some interesting results.
Thx for the video it is so helpful 😂💞i start drawing few weeks ago and i was drawing by hold pincel like i will die if i drop it
That style with your fuck-you-knuckle-grip was actually kind of cool on the end result.
Haha I thought that too. I might have to use it unironically when I want a jagged line
you could talk about anything and i'd enjoy it
Dude the way you talk. I feel like you are being sarcastic the whole time 😂 either way good video
I mean I personally think it's okay to try different things but me personally I tend to use the same grip as in school when I was writing because that's just what's comfortable for me It may take longer for me to learn stuff that way but I'm willing to put in time
I call mine the Bangers and Mash Guripu
*traditionally that's more of a painters grip
One question
How do you search those kinds of drawing grips... Like I can't seem to search these kinds of grips online with those names before
(I just made them up)
What...... I TRU#/÷$ Y¥€!
@@STIMULUSVIDEOyou did not make those up
What is the background music called
Oh we call it background music, in America
This video was so Odd but EXTREMELY cool!
The names sound like Mafia language Lol
I think I do the crab grab 👀
That's the drawing grip Leonardo di Vinci used except he called it the CRAB SNATCH
why are all the comments recent
I just subscribed
so you're a dirty tripod guy, huh? Respect
I know that I'm a fan of yours, and this will sound strange, but you should start a new channel, the algorithms of RUclips clearly do not notice you. I have watched all your videos, and the potential of the content is comparable to an iceberg, 20% of which we see on the surface and 80% of which is hidden from us. I want you to know that you are universally underestimated! I hope you will read this message and if you do not start a new channel, you will know that the great work that you have put into your videos has not gone unnoticed!!!
Your videos are so good :D
Thanks dude ✍️
Hey can anyone tell me more about that penguin grip? It seems sort of natural for me.
Bro the way you holding the pen is awesome but if I hold like you my hand will became red
I was looking for an educational video about 'how to grip a pencil for drawing' and i found the honest answer 😂😂😂
But seriously this is actually so true for a bunch of things that require precision and coordination eg i was a competitive fps gamer and i spent a stupid amount of hours on cs:go, quake, OW etc
And what they all have in common is pixel accuracy and coordination moving in a 3d environment game with mouse&keyboard, basically the rule there with the mouse is the same as with a pen or pencil.
You need to find your own personal balance as for how much tight you grip it and how you position your fingers for comfort, stability, precision and (in the case of gaming) reactiveness.
Also the type of pen, pencil or mouse is a huge factor... quick example: take a pencil that is too small and your hand will cramp or force your fingers to unnaturally claw then take a pencil that is too big and you won't be able to be precise and move it smoothly and quickly as you could with a smaller one, obviously the big and small all depend on how long and wide your hand his.
i love your channel
thanks man
Wow! Do you hold your pen like that when you write, as well?
In Bosnia, where I'm from, everyone holds a pen in the so-called dynamic tripod way, which is universally considered correct. So, of course, I was taught that way when I was a child. However, since I was very young and really wrote a lot, I developed a big callus on the top knuckle of my middle finger, where the pen rests. Trying to get rid of that, I changed my grip so that my pen rested between the two knuckles of my middle finger, and I would bend my middle finger and curl it inside my palm. The callus disappeared after a few years, but it left me with a weird way of holding a pen. Many people commented on it. In fact, while talking to a psychiatrist on one occasion, I started filling out some questionnaire she gave me, and she asked me in a shocked voice: "Do you always hold a pen like that?!" I felt like an alien :))
Later, when I started travelling and gained access to cable TV and the Internet, I noticed that people in other countries hold pens in all kinds of different ways. It's actually quite rare to see someone hold it correctly, and no one seems to care whatsoever.
lol no my real grip is the one I show at the start of the video. The other one is a joke. But if I'm being serious, more than 90% of the grips I see where I live are the so-called "lateral tripod." I think this is because most pens only work if you hold them more vertically, while the textbook grip we refer too is more suited to sketching with a pencil because of the angle. Just a thought
@@STIMULUSVIDEO May I know where you live?

I use the spider grasp
Does the crab one actually work? I used that one for writing since I was little but I don't know how well it works for drawing. I don't even know if it's actually related to having big hands / long fingers, even though I do have very large hands.
I've tried to do the tripod grip for a long time, but I just can't get a grip (haha) on it, now im struggling to decide if I should just stick to my natural grip, which is the crab (Which, I think is actually called the lateral Quadrupod)
I've seen a LOT of people using it. Mostly women for some reason. In my opinion, everyone SHOULD use the classic grip because it gives you more control over longer strokes, and won't tire your wrist as quickly. But I imagine you can't force it... What's more interesting to me is that the grip doesn't seem to matter when it comes to composition. Sure, the line quality might be garbage, but as you can see in the end of the video, I can pick the most awkward grip imaginable, and it doesn't change my ability to visualize a picture. I bet I could even draw with my feet. Maybe that's the next video.
Same I use the crab grab since I was little chase I was taught like that. Pretty sad though cause the classic one seems like the most efficient one so far
ive been using the filthy grip ever since and i was a kid, and im telling you guys, DROP IT. use another grip, because this grip is horrible for control on your strokes / lines.
thank u
good
I use HUMANGUS DUNGUS FUNGUS! grap
I think I do the the spider grasp
Jesus Christ lol, shouldn't upset me, but...yea
sorry for leaving for so long man. but hey im back now!
Welcome back -- you know, it's that goddamn youtube algorithm that tried to keep us apart. I'm going to file a formal complaint with google
we must fight youtubes authoritarian oppression!! ;)
Im close to reach around grip
*a disappointment of the mother and father*
So now I'm just wondering, as a white American non-manga-artist, why my natural grip that feels most comfortable for me is apparently a "grip used in Japan by manga artists".... (the fisherman's wife)
