My father is 65 years old. When he retired from his service(school teacher) at 60, many of his colleague & friends thought that he would but a car just like them. But he surprised everyone with cycle. He uses this cycle for daily use. Many of his colleague got diseases like blood sugar, spondylosis. We only have one scooty & 2cycles in our family. Cycling & walking has health benefits.
Imagine walking peacefully on a quiet street, free from the worries of traffic. You reach your destination undisturbed, enjoying the serene surroundings without the fear of being hit by a car.

15 minute city is an amazing concept. If everything can be available at a walking distance of 10-15 minutes, then that would be really amazing. When you won't have any requirement of using a car, you'd eventually not own a car. Subsequently you're gonna be much healthier.
It's an imaginary solution which is only possible if you are either not switching your company or living on rent to easily relocate, both of these reasons are practically impossible
Nice dream but try making Delhi a 15 minute city. Not only is it impossible, even if you did achieve it, r*pes, pickpockets, robberies, etc., will skyrocket like no tomorrow. The main argument for private transport in this country is safety, not convenience.
@@RajatTest7 Switch culture is not a major problem unless you're switching to another city altogether. If the second city is also having similar planning, then it will work out the best. It is not impossible. It is definitely an expensive and a long term goal to achieve but it is attainable.

Being a pedestrian or riding a bicycle is the most dangerous way to commute on Indian roads. In Bangalore there are no zebra crossings anymore. You literally have to spot an opening somewhere and sprint across and hope. No one is going to slow down for you. Footpaths are occupied by the shops or are used for car parking or are broken altogether.
real problem - especially being a cyclist in India. In CHennai they introduced lot of smartbike stands and enabled a few roads - but these are not used much. Our culture should change to enable walking and cycling. Taxis should be better regulated. Then people wont want to own a car
Absolutely loved this video, Dhruv! Clicked through your heatwave video. Your insights resonate deeply with my own experiences and beliefs. I've never owned a vehicle in my entire life because, like you, I believe it's impractical and environmentally damaging in a densely populated city like Mumbai. The inefficiency and expense of owning a car here are staggering. It's not just a waste of time and money, but it also contributes to the city's severe pollution and traffic problems. Mumbai's unique urban landscape makes public transportation a far more logical choice. The city's public transit systems, though imperfect, are still more efficient and eco-friendly than private cars. Our Aarey Colony, often called the last Brazilian forest of Mumbai, is a crucial green space that needs protection. Allowing cars into this area only accelerates its degradation, threatening both the environment and the health of residents. Aarey Forest is a vital ecological asset, home to diverse flora and fauna, including several endangered species. It acts as Mumbai’s green lung, absorbing pollutants and providing much-needed oxygen. The forest also plays a critical role in regulating the city's temperature and mitigating the urban heat island effect. Its lush greenery and open spaces offer a natural respite for residents, promoting mental and physical well-being. Preserving Aarey is not just an environmental necessity but a social imperative to maintain Mumbai's ecological balance. To truly address these issues, we need to rethink our transportation choices and urban planning. Banning cars from Aarey Colony would be a significant step towards preserving this vital sanctuary and improving the overall quality of life in Mumbai. We need atleast 5 more Aarey colonies in Mumbai. Your video is a powerful reminder of why we must advocate for sustainable solutions. Keep up the great work! (Comment edited by ChatGPT)

@@funwithwomen population is the problem but the thing is that you cannot control the population in 5 or even 10 years but the number of cars can be reduced in a span of 2 to 3 years. Now I am not saying that population should not be controlled but controlling population takes a lot more time so until the population is under control we can reduce down the number of cars on the street or we can make laws so that on an average a person can drive their car only 2 to 3 times a week and when the population is under control we can make car usage normal.
@AjiteshBharat population is the problem. But the thing is that most of the space of the road is occupied by cars and those cars are owned only a small percentage families. Even many 4 members' family own 2 or 3 cars. So population is a headache for traffic but car is the root cause...
Recently I had my CUET exam and it was from 12 noon and i left my home at 9am because I knew about the traffic and stuff but despite being so early buy 11:12 I was literally crying that there was a lot of traffic and I was sure that I will be going to miss the exam but fortunately the driver uncle was so kind enough that he took me to the centre via shortcuts where the condition of the road was so poor. So I think that it is a major issue because I know how I felt at that moment when I was trapped by the traffic.
In city like mumbai local trains are the best mode of transport. cheapest and fastest. I know its not the most comfortable mode, but if u want comfort you can opt for AC local trains they are not as expensive as cars.
One thing I would really like to point out is that all the countries that have banned cars and made streets for pedestrians are having a mild temperate climate which greatly varies from India where it is not at all as comfortable to walk on the roads during the day (in the southern parts especially) Although this thing is really insignificant and I believe in the car banning policy too... I wish something would be done to avoid people from falling unconscious or fainting in the streets too...

Dhruv, private cars are total lifesavers in emergencies and remote areas. They give you the freedom to go wherever, whenever, and make family trips way more comfy. Plus, they're a must for work and accessibility. And when heavy rains mess up public transport, private cars save the day, man. Can't overlook all these factors!
Yeah but still we have alternative solutions of these problems but pollution we don't have any other solution it can be possible and in case of emergencies we have taxi and for family trip we can rent a car
If any city wants to introduce this policy, need to work on drainage system first, absolutely no risk of flooding should be there. Tokyo drainage system is a benchmark for anti flooding system.
I used to live in the UK and once I started to use public transport, it saved time and money...now I'm in India and public transportation is actually an option because I don't feel safe if i drive by bike. I hope people use public transportation more and save the country from pollution.

Public Transport is also full of crowd at peak hours in Delhi. We must lower down the population. We should learn fron Haryana and should also promote the Haryana in India for an example and to inspire the whole country to lower down the population, so that the load on natural resources an be cut down. Bihar and Uttar Pradesh is gonna be disaster for whole India in terms of population and load-contribution on natural resources. So We need to deal with over-population of India firstly.
Population explosion in India is one of the major cause of pollution. Thanks for making a video on this topic. It's an issue of concern which the media/news never cover. Surely gonna share this video with family and friends. Keep uploading more on such topics!! 👍
No it's not. Most of the Indians live under poverty. They don't own car, most of them don't even have a motorcycle, they use minimal plastic (as they consume very little of anything), they don't have AC, also Indians don't eat that much meat compared to westerners which saves a lot too. So yeah population isn't the problem, consumption is. So yeah developed countries are polluting much more than India. In fact Indias pollution is very low except for big cities.
Definitely pedestrian friendly cities are better than car centric ones and I love walking (it's also better for health) so I'd definitely support more pedestrian centric infrastructure. Especially in big cities with high population density. Hope our policy makers look into it.
Speaking of highways, I remembered one of the highways in Seoul, South Korea had covered the streams called Cheonggyecheon and now restored into beautiful streams with side pedestrians. The government and its people go hand-in-hand to make their country/city livable for generations. Just fyi. Peace.
I have been watching you videos since Covid time. It really feels good when someone talks about our real problem. Your dream is also my dream. I did not purchase car as I really dont need it much, but most of my friend purchased a car, the post the pic on FB, insta, wtsapp status. sometime I feel like I am the odd man in all my friends who dont have car. Even I ask myself am I too poor to purchase a car? but today I feel proud that ibdirectly by using public transport whenever needed I am helping my country to breathe. Awesome video as always!
You're wise. People spend crazy money on cars to impress others. The joy lasts 6 months max. After that maintenance headache of their feature laden cars. Buy a basic car with basic features. Because half of the features stop working after a year.
The video is good and has provided solution to one of the core issues. But, i feel one of the core reasons to have a private vehicle in a country like India is that its assures security and freedom of movement rather than status. The person is not dependent on others to move from one place to another. In India, there is a trust issue with respect to relying on public transport. If you own a private vehicle, you dont have to worry if auto driver will charge more, or the cab driver is trustworthy, safety during night journey etc. Until and unless this issue of trust and convenience is resolved with respect to public or third party transport. People will still use private vehicles only.
The reason why public transport in India is unreliable is because rich and powerful people don't use it. If they use it, they will influence the government into making it better. Take metro for example. All metro systems in India (except Kolkata) are so good, because politicians, businessmen and celebrities use them. So if cars get completely banned in India then these influential people will be forced to use the bus and trams. And as a result, the government will make these services better.
The best way to improve safety and reliability of non-car modes is to fund them. Built it and people will come. Delhi metro has huge ridership. The more regularity, security, and coverage, the more ridership. Cars are status vehicles. Hai ghar hai paisa hai gaadi. That's the attitude. Cycles and motorbikes give you the same freedom and are usually faster, and fewer cars makes them safer anyway.
One of the most pertinent RUclips videos. I have been thinking about the same issue for so long. One additional points, why ever bigger and wider body car models are being allowed on Indian roads. Were the previous models like Maruti800 not sufficient. We can just compare the avg size of cars in 1990s vs today.

You are fool or misinformed.

Absolutely! Was just thinking the same yesterday, the pollution is unbearable and it's going to cause severe health issues! I hope there's some solution implemented soon. We need a shift, to learn to let go cars and use public transport!
I remember it used to take me 60+ minutes to travel 19 kms from my home to work (used to work 7:30pm to 4:30am). Sometimes I would reach work and be dizzy due to inhaling fumes in traffic jams. The smog would stick to my skin and every time I shampooed my hair the water would be black. Just absolutely terrible.

No it's not. Most of the Indians live under poverty. They don't own car, most of them don't even have a motorcycle, they use minimal plastic (as they consume very little of anything), they don't have AC, also Indians don't eat that much meat compared to westerners which saves a lot too.
Excellent.. I always believe in what Dhruv rathee has tried to explain . Proud of you sir
Bhaiya , I usually watch youtube and if I watch videos , I skip a lot part of that video but the videos you and your team makes are so knowledgeable, interesting and useful that I don't want to skip any part of it . And there is also a thing to say. although you do not live here but you seems to be wellwisher of the country unlike those you create controversies. thnx

As someone from West Bengal, I'm glad that most of the commute is done on the Metro trains. Helps me avoid heat and pollution for the most part.👍
