    Warren,
One thing to do, is unplug all the injectors and check the resistance of each coil. One could be shorted and pull the drivers down inside the ECM. I had an engine do this one time and caused erratic injection timing, and ultimately a no start. Had no codes as well. Was a Cummins engine though. Crank no start with no codes and no smoke.
Once I found the shorted injector coil, I left that one unplugged, and the engine fired up.
When you have cam or crank unplugged, it wont fire injectors, so you'll get normal cadence cranking.
I feel your frustration, I really do. Shop owner myself.

You hit the nail on the head @3:40. I am an engineer for a large equipment OEM and im in my 40s. I am one of the few that works on equipment in my spare time and grew up doing it. Most do not. And the younger group coming in rarely have any hands on experience with equipment or working on things. It doesn't look like it will get any better. And us older experienced engineers can''t catch all the serviceability issues and even if we do, we get overuled by managers who say thats a nice to have. Bigger flywheel housing costs more money so some manager with no hands on equipment experience probably nixed that because of extra cost!!!

Measure from where the mating side of the timing cover (where it meets the back of the block) to the center of the cam sensor head mounted in the timing cover. Then you will know where you need to locate the tone ring, as far as spacing.

When you crank the engine do you get white smoke out the exhaust? Yes would be a timing problem, no would be a fuel problem which is what I suspect. When truck initially come in had a code for small fuel leak. Nothing external so had to be internal. I believe you said the high pressure fuel rail pressure was considerably high now. High pressure there would cause your injection pump rollers and can premature wear so this may have been going on for a while. Injector line must be seated correctly and torqued correctly or will leak across to the return and won’t fire. If this was your problem you wouldn’t show high pressure. Try to determine which cylinder is firing with a thermo gun and then track injector line back to rail and start looking for a blockage in the fuel rail. Could even be a pice from old injection pumps. Also for shit and giggles try starting with one of the injection pumps unplugged and then the other. I’ve heard of them running on one pump but not with the other or both plugged in. Injector line go bad on these is common and can leak internally. Should have about one thread exposed when these are seated correctly. If that was the case you would have low pressure and your sensor would need to be bad since you’re reading high pressure. Premature pump lifter wear still sounds like pressure and that would need to be a blockage or bad high pressure regulating valve. Good luck.

    • @Kip-si8eh
      @Kip-si8eh 9 месяцев назад +1

Another thought, too high of pressure with new injection pumps maybe from a stuck pressure regulating valve, maybe above working limit of injectors and can’t open when pulsed. Unplug one pump and try.

At 27:13 you can see the triangular witness mark of the tone wheel bolting directly to the gear.....so the spacer plate must be behind the gear. I wonder if the new cam eliminates the spacer, and the gear bolts directly to the cam....with the spacer ending up in the used parts bin???

Warren, if the turbo ends up not being the root issue, I would really encourage you to remove the high pressure fuel lines and the fuel rail and make sure all those passages and clean and free of debris. I’ve seen where debris can stop up the high pressure fuel system and cause the high rail pressure like you were reading and not let the engine start. Hope the turbo is the actual issue!

Worked on a msd tbi efi aftermarket , on hot summer days it would do a no start because the fuel pressure would exceed 60psi and shut the injectors down , he had the pump regulate the pressure with no return, put a return with a regulator in line so it would dump pressure after 50psi it was the fix for that

The main thing about the cam gear is that the idler gear must mesh fully in line with the cam and crankshaft gears.
If you'd put the spacer under the cam gear if wouldn't have lined up.
You used common sense in putting the spacer on the outside so the fixing bolts still went through the same thickness of materials before screwing into the crankshaft.
They might have bottomed out otherwise?
What a PIA it's been proving that you did a perfect job the first time.
As you said if thevtiming had been wrong the engine wouldn't have turned over when you adjusted the valve ckearance.

Re extracting a flywheel with such little clearance around it, I used to use two or three pieces of threaded bar in place of the original fixing bolts to slide the flywheel clear of the housing. i used two pieces of welding rod with the end 1/2" bent over at a right angle slid into the gap between the outer diameter of the flywheel and the casting until the rod could be hooked to the crank side of the flywheel to pull the flywheel on to the threaded bar.... This occurred on some tractors I worked on, not this engine. What was the measurement of the location groove on the original camshaft to the gear face meshing with the camshaft gear ? Leaving the original spacer OUT, does the gear face match up. Just a thought. (With all the different jobs on the go in your workshop, I admire you keeping on top of the workload.

You going to put a big sign on the front door I no longer work on trucks with Paccar MX engines😂 When you were cranking the truck over the first time it was woofing in the intake the VGT was closed so you essentially had an exhaust brake. This new shit is too over complicated fvcking sensors here there, if it breaks you have a wild goose chase finding the problem. Of course they don't give you any literature with the updated/revised parts the service manuals are not updated so you are left to your own to try figure shit out.

Warren, I am not a truck mechanic, but I’ve worked on farm equipment. Is there some way you can check if the tone wheel lines up with the speed sensor? The end of the new cam could be thicker than the old one and the spacer throws the edge of the tone wheel off the sensor. Maybe the spacer should be left off.

Shot in the dark, but could injectors or injector harness cause an issue? Maybe when it initially fired, it turned over and grabbed a wire or something and that's why it quit and won't restart?

I haven't seen a current video so you probably got it figured out by now but,2 things,1- updated shit scares me,anytime one thing is updated usually it corresponds with something else,in other words, the updated cam probably requires other updated parts that those parts jockies don't know about.like the tone wheel.how do you know the bolt holes are in the correct spot to accept the cam gear and be timed properly? You got to remember those stupid paccar motors are made by cummins and anytime I've run into an "update" there's almost always been more to it than just one part.i would put the cam gear and tone wheel on and make sure it lines up with the sensor, you can be off an 1/8 " and it wont run,and if the high spots on the tone wheel are in the wrong spot it will be out of time even tho your marks are correct.anyway, enough rambling,i hope you figure it out because i thought i was the only one that got those brain teasers

Warren it looks like the tone wheel was not under the sensor all the way for it in the bell housing with that shim washer on the outside of the cam gear instead of in between the cam and the gear. With the Tone wheel not all the way under the sensor there may have been not enough of a signal to trigger the firing circuit in the ECM for the injectors. Does the service bulletin have a new cam gear that has to be installed for this updated cam shaft or maybe a new tone wheel? We had a similar problem when a tech install the timing gear back to front on a gear box and we could not get a reading from the speed sensor. That gear installed that way was just on the edge of the sensor reading it but it was not sending a strong enough signal to the controller to get the ignition to trigger.

Hey, if the spacer is one the outside of the gear like you had it does the dowel to index the tone ring sprocket still engage? Wondering if the tone ring sprocket was not in the correct spot because if the dowel doesnt engage you have 3 different ways to put it on based on the bolt pattern.

Could the tone wheels on the cam or crank be pressed on out of sync? Never have worked on a Packnar.
