All the rain reminded me of something. I'm an old desert rat living in Arizona for over 50 years. Occasionally we do get rain and when we do our washes turn into little rivers. My son manages a general repair auto shop and on day when I was getting regular maintenance service he showed me another C5 in for a new engine. Seems the driver of that car drove into a running wash forgetting that the intake on a C5 is basically like a Hoover vacuum. The Vette sucked in water and hydrolocked. As a result I am very careful to never drive my Vette into a puddle that may be deeper than I think.
Lyle. This summer I blew an easy shift, locked up the rear and sent my beautiful c5 z06 into the gravel at our local track. I still feel deep shame because the paint shows the wear and it is a constant reminder of my stupidity in being aggressive in a turn. Remember stupid is as stupid does and we all have the potential inside us. I'm glad the only injury was to your pride and not your health! Let's see that beauty once she is back on the road please.

Thanks for sharing your story. Now I will share mine. Last January I scrapped my 2008 C6 Z51 Corvette. I was running late and I was in a hurry to get to Tampa from Ocala. It was 9 am on a very cold January morning at the beginning of this year. As I tried passing a slow vehicle from the middle lane into the left lane, the back of my cal lost traction. It was only 33 degrees farenheight that morning and I had summer tires, so it was like driving on marbles. I lost the back end of the vette and crashed into the guardrail at 80 mph. Upon impact my car went airborn and I rolled the car over 7 times. The car was a total write off. Thankfully I survived the crash with only a few bruises. I could not believe that I had just crashed. Don't be in a rush. It's not worth it.
Crazy story! Did you get the full value payment from the insurance company? I have a 6 speed supercharged C5 and I put it away for the season a week ago, but my starter failed on my GMC Envoy, so I had to drive the C5 to work for only one day.....well, it was cold that day and the pavement was cold, and every corner I took, the car got loose and kicked sideways....these cars don't like the cold or wet pavement.

I know how this feels. I wrecked mine and had to buy a used front bumper cover and repair both my quarter panels. I decided to repaint the entire car. Even doing all the work myself it has been very expensive but my car should look great when it’s done
Lyle - Glad your ok been there I once wrapped my 1978 Z28 around a light pole after working nights. I parked my car there to be away from other cars. I was tired and disgusted with myself. It was Memorial Day weekend. I did not drive my car on the holiday until it was fixed.

Thanks for sharing Lyle. 1st: thankful you didn’t get hurt! Cars are fixable, you’re not. 2nd: in aviation we have a saying: never ever assume and never ever get complacent. I curbed my right front C6 CHROME wheel last summer, NOT My fault as someone was coming into my lane and I had to take evasive action. Sucks. Found a wheel on OEM wheel and it was $600 bucks… decided To live with it, but I know what you mean about curbing.
Sorry to hear it. It’s always a bummer when you do something silly. Good thing is you’re ok. I recently rebuilt an 03Z damaged similarly to yours. Getting the quarter cheaply, repairing fiberglass tub damage and repairing the rear bumper and doing the paint myself I spent almost no money. These C5s are VERY DIY friendly when it comes to bodywork.
We've all been there, bud. Don't torture yourself too much. Last year I was backing my full size pickup out of a spot in a tight parking lot and saw an empty spot behind me. Ah! I'll just back into that spot and then turn the way I want to go. So in the time it took me put it in R, and start backing, some guy entered that spot from the next row, going forward. I must have been looking only in my side mirrors (to avoid the cars next to me) didn't see him and as I slowly backed up I heard that sick crunch. He was stopped when I hit him. My fault. No damage to my truck but his plastic grille and one headlight were smashed. Shit. First accident in 50 years. What a dope!
I hate to admit I have done stupid crap and felt bad after and yes my Vette received a scratch and yes it was my fault but I am not talking about it. Thanks for sharing letting me know I am not the only idiot

I know that this accident happened just the way you say, but please avoid another possible wreck in Florida’s extreme downpours and replace those tires. Some years ago I wrecked my car in the rain because I wanted to get a few more miles out of my tires. I regret that to this day.
I wish I had a nickel for every stupid move I've made in my 69 years, Lyle. $3 grand is painful but it could always have been much so much worse....i.e. getting hurt, etc. Thankful you and the folks around you that day are all okay. We continue to live and learn.
That sucks. Late for Trivia? Been there done that....I put a nice gouge in the bumper cover of my 1999 Trans Am when I lived in Boston making a U Turn on a bridge and I caught the granite curb. I know exactly how you feel. Car was mint up until that point.

Love this body style so much 😍 If I could ask for your expert advice on something that would be greatly appreciated! Our vette is in very very good condition. All original except we did get new tires last year. We do not have any dents or damage to the car, but the age of the paint is showing. Looks great from afar, but actually has a tremendous amount of fine scratches and swirl marks. I am wanting to get a completely new paint job. What kind of research should I do before actually going forward with this? Thank you for your time! Love all of your videos!
I didn't put my engine coolant top on all of the way some sprayed out. I put it on all of the way. The next day while I was waiting in the driveway thru of a restaurant, my 1995 c4 over heated in Michigan and the engine coolant over flow container started over heating and smoking
Glad you were not injured. Corvettes can be fixed. Unfortunately, many times humans suffer permanent injuries. Human errors happen. Lessons learned. I love my C5 bolt on quarter panels versus the ones on my C4.
Wheel master close to you did an excellent restoration on my wife’s Durango SRT wheel $300 opposed to new OEM at $2200 retail but $1600 on line or $750 for a retail rebuilt.
My C-7 has been in the body shop 2 times this year. Some one backed in to me at convenience store. Got it fixed and a coyote ran head first into it and broke the grill and the bottom of the facia and part of the grille hit the a/c condenser. Meanwhile a woman didn't see me and ran into me at a drive through at a McDonald's. Two noses a grill. Two fenders a head light and a door shell.later Oh I forgot the Zo6 splitter.
The good news is you weren't injured in your "accident" and the damage repairable. Just like you I have never caused an accident but have been hit several times. In my 1987 Corvette I had 3 other driver's on seperate occassions hit my front end (they ran a red light), forced their way into my lane on the left side, forced their way into my lane on the right side. And, the 4th 1987 hit another stop sign runner doing 50+ in a hospital zone (posted 20 mph) which this time, being t-boned on the driver's side door and front fender, my Vette was now a total job. No I was not injured but pretty shaken up. Fortunately my 1995 Vette- well I sold it before it got hit. But what I bought was a 2000 Z51 Coupe. Guess what, a large, very large, pickup, in the dark, did not see that I was right beside them and about to move ahead of them. When not seeing me they moved into my lane hitting the Vette in the right rear quarter panel. Mostly cosmetic fortunately and was mostly buffed out by me. But, the rubber of those big tires burned thru the clear coats right into the paint. Their insurance company paid for a repaint and what the shop tried to "color match" the rest of the car. Now I'm in my 2003 Z06 and one recent morning I get to work and see my right rear quarter panel and rear bumper had been hit by a SUV parked behind me. They didn't have the room needed to park behind me without some bumper tag. Estimates for a quarter panel and rear bumper cover repaint is $3000. Ironically, my 1970 and 73 Vettes never got a scratch.
No worries, glad it wasn't worse and glad you're okay. lol, have to ask, how bad was the other guy??? lol Sorry. Assuming you didn't even break a taillight on the truck. And, that's a good thing too. Patience is a challenge for many of us, thanks for sharing, good lessons to be learned.
In 1992 I wrecked a brand new vette. The airbag saved my life, they were new and nobody had seen them work. $29,500 dollars later it was repaired. Anything over 40 mph 0:15 and kiss your ass goodbye

I just purchased my FIRST Corvette Tuesday. A 2011 base 06. I'm 68 with a clean record minus a couple tickets. Pretty good driver. So what do I go and do but curb my right front rim---@@$&#%??€£¥¢. I'm pretty sure I can fix things and the funny thing is I just found a set of rims last night. Stupid stupid, stupid. No one but myself to be mad at. I'll survive 😢😢😢
It is better than the C3, but the giant hood and the entire rear upper body are both essentially single pieces of fiberglass, so not quite as replaceable by the piece as the C5 and up cars. Lyle :)

They didn't have the room needed to park behind me without some bumper tag. Estimates for a quarter panel and rear bumper cover repaint is $3000. Ironically, my 1970 and 73 Vettes never got a scratch.

I just purchased my FIRST Corvette Tuesday. A 2011 base 06. I'm 68 with a clean record minus a couple tickets. Pretty good driver. So what do I go and do but curb my right front rim---@@$&#%??€£¥¢. I'm pretty sure I can fix things and the funny thing is I just found a set of rims last night. Stupid stupid, stupid. No one but myself to be mad at. I'll survive 😢😢😢
Does the C4 come apart in pieces like the C5????
It is better than the C3, but the giant hood and the entire rear upper body are both essentially single pieces of fiberglass, so not quite as replaceable by the piece as the C5 and up cars. Lyle :)
@@csvette thanks Lyle for all your expertise and advice. I am on the fence between a C4 or C5. I had many C3 and I have worked on may C4’s in the past. Looking for a road trip car and trying to weigh all the options before I pull the trigger.

Hay Lyle they make cars everyday as long as no one is hurt all is good, and that is why they call them accidents and not on purposes, it happens sucks but the sting will turn to a dull pain and then go away just in time for the next😂
