Re: Midra - seems like even people who heavily agree with me, enjoy Midra a lot 🤔 I think it's safe to say that on a personal level I've just gotten sick of the delayed attack shit lol. It bothered me a lot in the base game too, though over time I've relaxed a little bit on some of them. For instance I famously also hated Radagon for at least partly similar reasons, but over time I've not disliked him AS much. Unfortunately it's hard to say if that'll change for Midra since I do feel like I learned him well, and still didn't find him that enjoyable or impressive. Who's to say though 🤷

A game shouldn't be bigger than the content it can offer. Otherwise it will feel repetitive or barren. If Fromsoft struggles with ER and SotE sizes then they should stick to making smaller games or split their larger games into multiple DLC's or expansions.

Holy, I disagree so much on the Midra fight. I think he is the best boss in all of Elden Ring.
Yeah he has delayed attacks but they felt very fair and deliberate (not overly delayed to the point of looking absurd).
His agression and speed is also much more manageable than other bosses who jump around so damn much and have super long combos with little down time.
His cutscene and dialogue (as well as hearing him throughout the manse) also added a ton to it for me.
It's strange, up until now I have agreed with almost all of your takes but I VERY heavily disagree with this one.

I'm definitely more okay with the Dancing Lion boss being re-used because it is explained in the game (and outright shown in the trailer) that there were a lot of these guys, they were a part of the Hornsent culture before Messmer burned it to the ground. Midra moves around the arena with a grace and flow that hasn't been in the elden ring base game or dlc, he plays ACTUALLY like a dark souls 3 enemy instead of a sekiro enemy, the dance is fully considered and in tact instead of deliberate and relentless combo strings. You can gain proper advantage instead of rolling 20+ minutes to land one strike. Midra is probably in my top 5 souls bosses.

obligatory "I actually loved midra" comment
    but besides that, I DESPISE souls fans nowadays, they treat ER like it's some sort of religious figure of theirs and from software is some sort of deity of whatever, whenever you complain about something genuinely valid they'll jump on your throat and say you're doing something wrong or just suck at the game;
remember when back in the day "git gud" was a meme we used to tell people to keep going and try harder to genuinely get better? nowadays "git gud" is just either a braindead way to play off your arguments and ignore criticism or "just learn to cheese the boss bro", trying to play "fair" in ER does not work anymore, the game FULLY expects you to use literally every single thing in your disposal to win conflicts even if it means completely doing a 180 on your build that you've used for dozens of hours for a single fight
I hope ER was a one off and that they'll go back to a more ds3 approach to the rpg elements with sekiro like combat, if everything else that comes out from the studio is more akin to elden ring I don't think these games are for me anymore

  • @InfernalMonsoon
    @InfernalMonsoon День назад +1

Honestly the final boss of the DLC is just so insane and has so much going on that several people get genuine epilepsy attacks from it, it's a literal health hazard. The first phase was pretty fun and has some interesting attacks with not too much going on, other than that triple swing roll catch. But having one third of the decent first phase and then two thirds of literally not being able to see anything is beyond overkill. I don't have much issue with those crazy attacks on their own but having the boss suddenly do all of it in one go, for the majority of the fight, makes the boss so unnecessarily brutal that it becomes tedious to learn, because you get stomped so quickly that you have very little time to learn anything.
I feel if they broke that fight into many more phases that introduces a single new attack in phase two one by one then players would be able to adjust to them in a way that feels natural, so players will only have that final stretch of the fight to worry about everything. Honestly it would make it a much more fun and fair fight while making it far more dynamic and keeping the challenge intact in a way that's a steady climb, and not a spike from sea level to the stratosphere.

I was one of the people spoiled on the final boss when the leaks dropped. I was 99% convinced the leaks were faked, because the whole concept was so stupid and just felt fundamentally wrong for From Software. Now that I know the leaks are real, I've lost a massive amount of motivation to even finish the DLC.
It doesn't help that now Miquella's defining character trait is his obsession with Radahn when there are absolutely no connections between the two in the base game. This leaves us with two possibilities: Either they had always planned this, and deliberately obscured the connection between Miquella and Radahn and gave us red herrings like Godwyn on purpose, or else they reworked Miquella's character to create a lore justification for the Radahn boss fight they wanted to put in the DLC. Neither possibility really sits right with me.
I'm pretty sure this will be my last Souls game. I just don't think the devs care in the same way that they used to.

I did my playthrough in NG+1 and based on the damage I'm seeing from your bosses, I don't think our experience was all that dissimilar. Clearly, Scadutree Fragments make an infinitely larger impact on this DLC than NG+ level does. Don't listen to anyone telling you NG+7 was the problem. I don't think difficulty itself is a bad thing, but difficulty brings out sloppily tuned bosses and slow character movement, two things Shadow of the Erdtree is plagued by. Your thoughts have been a breath of fresh air to me, because they mirror my own. I think people are blinded by the novelty of a shiny new FromSoft expansion and aren't discussing it candidly. Shadow of the Erdtree is nowhere near the same level of polish as something like Artorias of the Abyss or The Old Hunters was, and reusing Radahn as the final boss instead of Miquella himself (who would've been more of a unique fight mechanically, and likewise required much more work to create) is the epitome of "we didn't give a shit" to me. Lets scold the bad elements while also praising the good elements so the next FromSoft release is better than this - how is that a controversial take?

But hey you're a RUclipsr with zero context on how the game development process works so yeah keep with that mindset of they don't give a shit. (Especially when you are praising things like The Old Hunters which one of the mains bosses Laurence is a Cleric Beast re-use.) But you know it is what it is. I hope that one day RUclipsrs understand and actually feel empathy towards the people who make things that they profit off of.

While I think the "we didn't give a shit" part might be a bit much, I will say that the scadurtree system was pretty damn poorly implemented in my opinion. About the final boss, I can see why they went that route. I'm pretty sure Miquella himself isn't a fighter like all the other demigods, he more specializes in coercion and brainwash. In the lore everybody describes Radahn as the strongest of the demigods, so it make a little bit of sense as to why Miquella chose to resurrect him.

It's both dawg. Learn to math. Fextra is your friend. Here's the law...
DLC enemies are default 20% harder in terms of health, damage, defense, resistance, and poise. Finding the scat trees bit by bit will get that 20% back to zero.
      Ng baddies are at 100%
ng plus? Same thing. This is the revenge playthrough haha.
Ngplus 2 aka your 3rd playthrough. 5% increase.
      4rth playthrough? 10% increase.
      5th? 20%
      6th? 30%
And then last is the 7th play through. 40%.
Oh and it also depends on what enemies you're facing. Some are not just 40% harder on ng plus 7 but rather 3 times harder haha. It can get pretty complex when you get into the deetz but this is the gist of it...
So going into the dlc on ng plus7 is that absolute hardest way to tackle the dlc.
If anyone can beat the dlc on ngplus WITHOUT cashing in scat trees at a site of grace. And without summoning. And without cheap ranged attacks, you would be butt poke roll dodge elden master!

The biggest disappointment for me was the radahn fight it just doesn't have that final boss appeal lorewise or mechanically. the almost unavoidable cross slash the lightshow spam the fact that its radahn again and his ost with a slight change again is really disappointing. coupled with the fact after the DLC ends no one comments on any of it not even gideon despite us getting miquellas great rune. Its was like the whole DLC was just some fever dream for the tarnished and that really sours it for me. not enough for me to hate it but i certainly feel disappointed with some aspects of it.

Half the baddies are reused or slightly edited for the dlc from the base game.
Many giant areas with nothing in them but maybe one thing lol. Many areas are just horribly ugly to look at. Endless piss yellow straw fields with oil slick roads that look like my toilet on chili night. Prettier areas come later at least lol. Not a great way to open is all I'm saying... Yay I got the dlc let's goo... Oh... It's super ugly lol. That wasn't the take I wanted to start with but that's how it is lol. Once you touch that arm, load in, walk up the steps, you're just like ew... Vs the main game where once you open that shudder... OMFG the most beautiful starting area ever seen in a open world game just about. Aside from varre that freak lolz
Scat tree system has flaws. It encourages exploring but it's terrible for gauging skill and boss difficulty. As a result you have azzhole players going "why did you struggle? It was sooo much easier for me" When they played on easy mode essentially by sticking to ng or ng plus one instead of doing it on ng plus 7. Or maybe you went for scat trees like crazy. Boss difficulty varies largely based on how lucky you are at finding hidden stuff? Lol that kinda sux... The boss is harder because I didn't go on a ridiculous easter egg hunt? Myazaki knows this is dlc, not a new game, right?
10 remembrance bosses and I don't remember half of em haha. What are their names again? Who cares... I gave em nick names lol. Con man rad dan. Timon and pumbaa. The lion king. Lol this dlc is myazakis take on the lion king I think haha. I think I remember the lil yoda demi human dood more than the main one's haha. Bosses were mostly a let down. I'm with Berto. Messmer and sort of rellana stole the show. The rest of em are meh or just mehhhhhhhhhhh
Unmemorable dungeons. The forge one's don't even have a boss and the only baddies in them are ground goo and rock boy, some of the most boring azzholes to fight in the game. These places just sucked lol.
Getting lost was super easy around those river crag junctions, those lord of the rings dwarven looking green areas to the north, some dungeons were just overly long.
Gotta love Bayle though haha. Hard boss that's kind of bull crap in some ways but over all it was probably the koolest part of the dlc.
90% of gear is useless trash. About 99% is useless trash on ngplus7 haha. Worse than the base game in just about every way.
Story stuff gets even more head scratchy
PVP still super unbalanced and laggy af.

DLC does nothing to add to the base game in terms of story. Would have been interesting to see Melinas take on the land of shadow or SOMETHING but no, it just ends up feeling super weird how the DLC is basically 100% separate from the base game story. I disagree with a lot of this and really enjoyed much of the DLC, but Im still a bit disappointed. First of all, the final boss. Im on him now, and while I like his first phase, the second is way too much. I reached that point yesterday and through the whole thing I was baffled by what was going on. Giant, bright aoe's, Radhan is zooming around like a hyperactive toddler, Im being assaulted by that clone-attack, I can barely find any openings because Im desperatly trying to survive, Miquellas bright hair in my face. When I died I just turned off the game and started laughing. My usual response when I fight a boss like this is I get annoyed of all the bullshit, but push through it. This was just so over-the-top that it was funny. Something I felt about the base-game that I feel about the DLC now too is that Fromsoft tried to keep the focus on aggressive combat from Bloodborne (ER's bosses are really fast, but they also have poise-meters, encouraging aggressiveness), but we are still stuck with the slower Dark Souls combat. The reason it worked in Bloodborne was that we are faster too. Radhan's p2 is just so overwhelming that I swear it broke something in my dumb gamer-brain. I'll keep trying but I need a break from this game first.
Related to that, another complaint I have is that its so damn big. Elden Ring is already too big for its own good, and even though the DLC has some of my fav bosses in the game (Messmer, Bayle, Midra and Romina), it REALLY didnt need an expansion. Let alone one of this size. It was really fun at first but eventually became exhausting. If Fromsoft ever makes another openworld game they need to get better at trimming away unecessary stuff.

They need to patch him. Not a nerf to help nubes but rather a removal of the rng bs. Those holy rays are random where they land and since he's always pushing you back, you can randomly be backed into one, get stunned, and then you're losing tons of health or it's game over. If he gets lucky on you once or twice then it's over. Too much luck is involved is the issue. Attacks being hard to telegraph is also a bit of a issue when BLINDING LIGHTS KEEP MAKING MY EYES HURT IN REAL LIFE. The fight sux lol.
Bad enough the fight can only be won by cheesing or 5 hours of roll butt poke perfection lol. But he has more health than the fire giant. It's a long boring random luck based fight in more ways than not. F that boss lol. And the rewards are like... Nuthin worth af so if you don't feel like fighting him again. I can't blame ya. Bad boss with bad rewards and isn't necessary to progress in the game sooo... Just go kill the elden beast and start again lol.

Are you even hearing yourself kid? You just agreed with me that it's rough! Which is fine at first but I'd hope the player can git gud enough to start beating the bosses consistently without dying a dozen times first and that's the problem. That finally getting gud part doesn't seem to be happening. You gotta use a limited strategy to win, and then cross your fingers that lady luck helps you over the finish line. NOT THE CASE with base game bosses.. Not nearly so... I dunno about you bra but I prefer it to be more skill based and less luck based. For example bosses like the pig, the snake boy, and rad dan all attack you out the gate so you can't summon fast. BUT sometimes they just like... Don't attack lol. Giving you a chance. Lol wtf is that??? Sometimes it's easy, sometimes it's hard, based alllll on luck? Okay game...
2... What's your level? What play through are you on? How many scat trees did you cash in and for what boss? See how complicated this is? See how player experiences can massively vary from one person to another. So wtf are you acting like we had the same experience? When it's becoming pretty obvious, based on your condescending tone, that you played on easy mode compared to me lol I'm on ngplus7 dawg.

At least I got tons of footage to back up my experiences. No offence Pal but I'd rather listen to vets like let me solo her and cell the gamer, who agree with me that the dlc and its final boss kinda sucked lol.
4... You learned rad danny's every move and bested him ay? Video or it didn't happen. No excuses kid. Every platform you can play this game on has a clip feature. Surely besting Rad danny of the dlc was a huge moment for ya. So why isn't the video proof on your channel for all to see my guy? You're making it sound like it was a big epic deal to you, based on this passionate comment of yours, so where's the video liar? Any 8 yr old with no brain can upload a elden ring clip. What's your excuse sun bra?
5... You can't master all his moves jackazz. The holy rays are rng dood. Do you even know what that means? It means it's random where the light lands. It can land right in front of the cam blinding you from telegraphing his next attack or it can insta pop up right on you, which stuns you, and makes it easy for him to finish you off. This creates situations where the player must simply die. Luck is seriously involved in the fight. Not just skill. You would know that if you had a brain lol. The majority of the best players agree with me on this. You remind me of all the elden simps telling people to get gud when they complained about the elden beast. Myazaki finally relents and lets us use torrent for the final boss now. Crickets from all you bad kids lol.
Been with these games since demon souls. Not too long ago I beat Malenia on ngplus 7 without getting hit. Only used str8 sword combo. That's it. And I did it on the unpatched version where Malenia is harder since she can water foul at any time during the fight. Now I KNOW you have never done anything close to as skillful and you wanna tell me that my gripes are just a skill issue? Well then... Midra is only good because he plays like a Dark souls boss. Let that sink in.
and to be honest Midra is not that good of a boss. Here's the thing, he's the lord of Frenzied Frikkin' Flame.
Just by being in the same room as him we should have a frenzy build up.
Here's how the dungeon should have gone, first make the mansion bigger or give it a basement like the Painted World of Ariandel.
Add switches that populate the boss room with zones that heal or protect you from the passive frenzy build up. This also let's you control how hard you want the boss to be, because you can pull levers to turn the zones on or off during the fight.
Give us a cookbook that crafts an item to resists frenzy somewhere in the area, MAYBE in a cave they so graciously forgot to add to the entire valley.
He has a glowing flame head and a Giant yellow sword. everything about him should cause frenzy build up. Vyke's spear can cause a buildup, but the sword lodged into this guy at the seedbed of Frenzied Flame doesnt? That's just silly.
Im fighting the Lord of Frenzied Flame and I dont feel threatened at all.
At least with safe zones you could keep the bosses slow/ delayed movements while forcing the player to pay attention to their positioning and surroundings.
& dont tell me he's a failed lord of Frenzies Flame. Look at his godamn head and his godamn title! This guy cant frenzy me in seconds but some loser with a stick in a Gaol can? cmon man.

I think you partly explained my disappointment in it, it still felt very cookie cutter for this game / DLC, it *felt* like it "should* be special or unique in some way, and the only things unique about it are 1) the beginning "phase", and 2) the only "proper" boss capable of frenzy. Like ffs, even the Abyssal Woods has more of a unique mechanic overall than this nerd.
I do think your idea of passive Frenzy is a good one, it could be very slow but it would be a good build of tension, especially if the attacks still build on TOP of that. Like heck I think Remina might have a mechanic where rot doesn't go down (or very slowly) once you start building it up, would've been nice if Midra had that too. As it stands the frenzy wasn't a threat, no more than just dying to the boss itself via damage, and who knows maybe it could've had a unique grab attack if Madness goes off. As it stands now I find Lamenter more interesting than Midra with its insta death mechanic

I don't agree with most people about the DLC bosses. I feel like FROM ran out of ideas for making things difficult beyond what they've already done. So it feels like they resorted to some bosses having long attack chains, AOE spam, tiny attack windows, and they keep moving away (looking at you, Putrescent Knight).
Sometimes it feels like they're trying to cheese you instead of making it fun. Kudos to those who can do 'DLC RL1 naked all bosses,' but that's not me and it never will be. I've beaten the base game more times than I can remember and the DLC once, but I've hit my plateau. The DLC seems to want me to be better than I can be, so it's just not for me. Still, I like the open world of the DLC and the minibosses, and the weapons and armor are pretty cool too. They're really the only reasons I've started a second playthrough of the DLC.
That said, I'm with the people who think Midra is a good fight. He's a bit spammy, but if you learn the dodge timings, he actually gives you time to breathe. The only reason I died twice was the frenzy buildup stunlock. I got him in three attempts after changing to a talisman to build up frenzy resist. His attacks felt like a fun dance, which I thought was pretty cool. Though, getting to him is annoying; that forest is just too damn big-I feel like I should be filing taxes in the time it takes to get to the manor.
But Lion, Gaius, Rellana, and Consort... I won't lie, I might have cursed Miyazaki's name a few times. I did struggle with Messmer pretty bad, but for some reason, I didn't actually find him that frustrating, but he still has my issues of denying damage windows by either attacking or moving away too much.

    • @keskorian5820
      @keskorian5820 7 дней назад +1

i disagree with most of your comment but the putrescent knight take is the worst one imo. he only has three AOE attacks, of which 2 are punishable. AOE's only cover a small percentage of his moveset. after his regular combos, he always stands still and you can often attack him mid-combo because attacks go over your head if you stay close. literally 2/3 of attacks in his moveset are jumpable, so you can just jump over the lower sweeps with a jump heavy before he goes away. fixes the issue you have with it
it's a non-spammy boss thats not too aggressive and doesnt have overly long combos you cant punish ( the long combo where he gets off the horse has 3 different punish windows ) it seems like you could really like this boss if you learned more about the fight

I wouldn't be surprised if some of the rushed development feeling of this DLC is down to Bandai Namco imposing a strict budget and time limit on it's development. They're a publisher known for cutting corners and it's very obvious with a lot of their very sub par anime games. I think another issue might be that From Software is moving on from Elden Ring to other projects and probably had a smaller team working on this DLC than the base game. I can definitely see this contributing to the issues that this DLC has too.
What's also got me curious is that it was leaked that From Software bought the Elden Ring IP from Bandai and actually owns it themselves now. I don't really see why they would do that when it was a major success and is probably a one and done thing. Maybe there's some sort of falling out between From Software and Bandai with this project. At the very least since they made so much money off this project they will probably consider self publishing some of their games going forward. If they don't have to deal with Bandai much going forward I'll honestly be happy about that since I'm not a fan of Bandai as a publisher at all.

I think it would be cool though if they did something like Rune/Lost Kingdoms which is kind of an action RPG Yugioh card game again. The Spirit ashes system from Elden Ring would probably work great for independent pawns in a game like that. And having your attacks be linked to consumable cards would probably add a bit more strategy to it.
Then again I don't think that kind of system would work well with the more fast paced twitchy combat they're doing with the souls games nowadays. The slower methodical approach from Dark Souls 1 and 2 though that might work better with it.

Your series on SotE saved me from feeling like I was going crazy. I agree on most points you’ve made. Before people tell me to git gud, I didn’t struggle very much with this DLC. I beat most of the remembrance bosses solo in 1-5 tries each, with Radahn and Rellana as exceptions, and I fought the first Dancing Lion with a friend. Sure, it was hard, but I’ve been playing the Fromsoft soulslike games since I was a little kid and they’re pretty much second nature for me.
Shadow of the Erdtree made me realize that I don’t like how these games are designed anymore. I loved certain moments for sure-Rellana and Romina especially, and the Cerulean Coast and Charo’s Hidden Grave were the prettiest Fromsoft locales I’ve seen-but man, the rest just felt like formulaic “haha game hard” bullshit to me. It feels like From saw how these games get praised for their difficulty and just piled on all the ridiculous combos, flashy attacks, and increasingly narrow dodge windows onto each enemy and boss to meet the community’s expectation of difficulty. I won’t even get started on the Radahn lore, let alone how the presentation of his resurrection makes no sense in the lore laid out by the base game.
I’ve never regretted purchasing a game or DLC in Fromsoft’s catalog until after I beat Radahn and felt relief not for overcoming a challenge, but because I didn’t have to play the game anymore.
Side note: I am surprised by your opinion on the Midra fight. I actually liked him a lot!

I’m shocked I have seen so few people talk about the shortcomings in the level design. This is my biggest disappointment in the DLC. There are only two true Legacy Dungeons in the DLC, Belarat and Shadow Keep. Everything else like Ensis, Enir Elim and the Manse is either just a linear combat tunnel with checkpoint spam or way too small. I would even argue that the specimen storehouse is way too linear and has too many graces and is vastly inferior compared to Dark Souls 3’s grand Archives which it is clearly based on. So the only good sections are Belarat and Church district. I was really surprised by this considering the base game has some of From’s best level design ever with Stormveil, Leyndell and the Shunning Grounds.

Feels so bad hearing this, I have the exactly opposite experience and love the DLC so much. It has my two new favorite bosses and I love how they made the whole open world not open world but instead a puzzle. That being said there is many problems with this approach and how it can backfire. For me the Cerulean Coast became a later game place after defeating Mesmer and burning the tree. So it became great place to just have a breather before getting back into action. I also play my first playthrough with summons/spirits if the boss gets to me because I know that I'll just not enjoy getting stuck for ages when all I want to do is experience the world.
I do think there are two types of die hard souls fans, the ones that put the boss fights as the best thing and the players that enjoy the world, the lore, the exploration the most. That is also why I think DS2 is a stellar game with lacking bosses (because for me; world first, bosses close second). Elden Ring made me understand this situation when I saw so many die hard souls fans getting frustrated because all they wanted was a short, linear gauntlet between boss fights. So with Elden Ring FromSoftware catered more towards us explorers that use every thing we can to delete the bosses (our first time through at least).
I would however not worry that much about thus being the new norm going forward, it didn't back in the day with DS2 even though that game sold extremely well and drove in a much more casual audience. After that came Bloodborne (which they worked on at the same time as DS2), and that game is the true GOAT, haha!
So I'm pretty sure they are furiously cooking up the next tight experience that will become the comeback for all bossfight lovers. You have very clear evidence of this with all the new type quick and advanced new weapon moves. Tell me you don't want to experiment with martial arts or stances in the next game! :)
I do think the next game is going to be japan/asia based, but man if my body doesn't tingle at the thought of stances being able to extend a trick weapons repertoire (so keeping fingers crossed that it be Bloodborne 2 but as new IP so we can get the damn thing on PC day 1)

Worst example is the Ringed City stairs with like 10 haralds, that was an awful choice, but pretty much every souls DLC so far spammed way too many enemies except this one. That kind of design incentivizes you to just run through the level and ignore content. I do not agree with you about this DLC, I think it is amazing and one of the best DLCs Fromsoft has made, but that doesn't mean that there isn't any flaws, like a lot of the weapons are incredibly unbalanced and most of them are lacking in power. All the remembrance weapons are pretty shitty. The areas look nice but can feel pretty empty sometimes (especially Cerulean Coast). Some of the rewards are rather disappointing (low tier upgrade materials). There was some performance issues at launch, which there still is. Shockingly, I haven't run into any game-breaking bugs yet. The Bosses are incredibly fun though, and Bayle is in my opinion, the best boss fromsoft has ever made, along with Igon being the best VA they have ever had. The Difficulty is shocking, but isn't nearly as bad as people say it is. The Story is really interesting, although pretty much entirely missable if you don't do the questlines. Now finally, I don't think Radahn is unfair, Extremely Hard, yes, unfair, no. The game gives you the tools that can make him significantly easier, But it requires some exploring, like the scadutree fragments to increase your damage, also revered spirit ashes to increase summon damage, and yes, using summons is completely fine, people who say otherwise are the obnoxious and idiotic souls "purists", just ignore them. Another tool that I think makes Radahn way easier, The Talisman of All Crucibles, it mashes all of the crucible talismans into one and it makes rolling better, backsteps better, take less headshot damage, and take less critical hit damage, it does nearly half your defense which is hefty, but it is very worth it for how much more evasive you become. You can also parry Radahn which pretty much trivializes him in it of itself.

I'd be very surprised if we ever see a game with Souls style combat again. That being said, I really loved this DLC. My main issue is Dancing Lion's lightning phase. Oh, and Metyr's fight is bad. I loved that the new tears, talismans and weapons added entirely new gameplay elements to the game. The perfect block system has already been really fun for my RL1 run and allows me to be a lot more aggressive with bosses than I was in the base game.
The new weapon types are extremely fun and flashy, though I stuck with my trusty Iron Greatsword for the whole playthrough. I think pretty much every boss has more agreeable openings than the base game, though I do think there is a "best" playstyle for each boss, it was fun for me finding my own playstyles to take on bosses.. I felt like Gaius reminded me of Gyoubu Oniwa, put on the deflect tear and it felt like a whole new fight. I figured Rellana's moveset was really susceptible to be parried and again it felt like a whole new fight. Maybe this is just a mindset I'm carrying over from Iceborne, but I enjoyed the new boss styles the DLC gave me.
I don't like the idea that FromSoftware is getting complacent though, I think that's a really bad faith take on this content. Unless you believe they're straight up lying in their interviews, this was meant to be the last piece of content they want to make for Elden Ring, and as I stated earlier, their last game using a Souls style of combat. I think the new weapon types, along with the new ashes and talismans and tears, could be considered a showcase for the direction they want to take the series.
I know you mentioned how you wouldn't recommend this DLC to someone who wasn't positive about the game, and I would've been in the same boat, but my friend picked it up after watching me play for a bit and it was the first FromSoft experience he could really get himself into. He loved that open world was structured like one giant level with hidden paths and in his opinion richer secrets, feeling that base game devolved into a POI simulator. He especially thought Ancient Ruins of Rauh was fantastic, and remarked that the design and layout of the area felt like a modern rendition of a 64 Zelda dungeon to him. He's always found FromSoft's combat really basic and underwhelming in player and movesets and always felt taken out by how bosses would just stand still, and felt this was the first time playing one of their games that the bosses were actively trying to kill him at all times.
Basically, I think it's completely reasonable to not like the DLC, but I really don't like the idea that it was an uninspired effort. I'd get into how much I loved the story of this DLC but that's a whole other thing I'd rather just make a video on. I'm hopeful that other developers take up the torch of the old grungy dungeon crawler style of their earlier games, because I really feel like FromSoft is ready to move on.
There are definitely a lot of criticisms to be had, but you already addressed the arguments for them quite well. Figured I'd write a bit of a counter take rather than just an "I agree", lol. Hopefully Silksong is something we both can love!

I kind of agree with fromsoft potentially being complacent part. Honestly it is on us as well to make them complacent. So much of valid criticism gets buried under the rubble of "git gud" and "skill issue" memes. It just enables fromsoft to get away with stuff they shouldn't.
I like the Midra fight apart from the fact that he is sometimes relentless. In one attempt, I couldn't avoid his explosion at the start of phase 2 and took about 60% damage (I think I had about level13 or 14 scadutree level), but instead of giving some time to heal, he followed up with the frenzy beam and then his 5 frenzy waves attack. Safe to say I died in that attempt coz I had to be picture perfect to dodge his incoming attacks just to be able to heal.
I finished the dlc on ng+3 first and then on ng. I did not enjoy the final boss fight whatsoever in either playthroughs. His 2nd phase is just little too much. If they ever nerf his phase 2, all I would like is that his holy attacks happen only on final hit of his combos.

    • @BertoPlease
      @BertoPlease  5 дней назад

Hmm I think yes and no for the complacency. I think if they were more self-aware they would still reconsider design choices, but yeah they certainly can get away with it because at this rate they know they're only getting more and more sales, and even if a lot of us don't buy the next product, there will probably be more new fans to replace us.
For Midra, yeah I was really frustrated that he can do the explosion attack and pretty much instantly combo into another range attack or something. If you figured out a super move like that you should have an opportunity to heal or something at least, but they seem to be less and less willing to reign in bosses in that way, just let the AI go loose

@@BertoPlease yeah new fans will be there to replace the ones lost. I think this was probably their best content for the dlc in terms of stuff to do but the map does suffer from being too big. The abyssal woods, cerulean coast, charo's hidden grave even the gravesite plains feel long empty spaces with very few things to find. Suffers that mountaintop of giants type of deal but not as severe.
As for the healing, I feel like they made the issue worse in dlc but I may be just imagining things. So many bosses in the dlc suffer from relentless aggression. I have to hope for a good rng to be able to get a quick opening to chug a flask. Having said that, I enjoyed ng playthrough more since bosses didn't hit a like a truck. Not getting 2 shotted felt refreshing (what a thing to feel right?).

Whether it's just I was built for it, or some kind of weird inverted confirmation bias I have, this DLC was the nectar of the gods to me. I loved almost all of it. A lot of points made I don't disagree with, but they just don't bother me as much. My favorite part in these games is the exploration, and for me the DLC world was overall just right. There were enough things in each place to keep me interested enough for me to check every corner and cliff I could find. I was satisfied with most of the world, and only a few places felt bland to me. I was quite pleased with most of the bosses. I did not like DBDL but that was mostly a skill issue and me being bitter about how punishing the lightning could be. I was glad not to find anything as brutal as waterfowl dance, as that singlehandedly makes Malenia super hard. Radahn has a lot of attacks that are pretty scary, but I *think* they can be dodged consistently. That fight irks me only because of a single combo that's so fast it eliminates like half of what would be safe punish windows. I really do love this DLC, and I'm sorry you don't feel the same. I hope Fromsoft's future can find a better middle ground, as it almost seems like some of the die hards are being alienated.

28:22 I don't agree with that at all. They re-used one rememberance boss, and it made sense to see them here. The biggest problem with the re-used bosses in the base game were about the dungeons feeling really similar and always ending in some normal mob with a health bar. They really did an effort to not do this in the DLC, every dungeon is much more fleshed out and they almost all have a unique boss, even the two Death Knights have a different moveset.
I have problems with the DLC but it looks to me like you expected it to fix the problems that the base game had instead of just being more of the same (just tuned up to eleven). I know I did and that's why I was disappointed.

The community was decidedly more mixed on the DLC than I thought it would be. I think From should maybe go back to more linear games. There's enough valid critiques of Elden Ring and Shadow that I don't think Elden Ring 2 or a spiritual successor would be received well unless something drastic changed about the formula. I feel like the DS2 team made this dlc, it feels rushed and not understanding what the players like about the game in its difficulty, Radahn feels like I’m the undead in the asylum while the player is in his NG+ run hurling combos at me and I get 1 hit in (that’s if my weapon lands) for every 10 hits he does.
It feels like they want to restrict the player in the abilities and buffs that we can apply by cranking their aggression to 100 and not letting you breathe. But there’s stuff in the dlc that add more buffs than the base game so I don’t know what the thinking is? The base games ai input reads you using your flasks and you can easily tell it with the godskin fights, they will always hurl a fireball at you if you are far away.
Not sure what the point on having beautiful animations and moves for the new weapons if I’m only doing 1 or 2 r1 attacks.
For me I love coop in the game and it’s how I got my friends into the franchise in ds3, but the summons makes it rather annoying as it’s a piñata fight which the bosses are being design in mind with now rather than it being a 1 on 1 duel like it’s always been before. I thought the idea is to just crank the health up when you use summons which is to compensate for another person doing dps to a boss for when they’re struggling it solo and not pushing it to be a requirement to use a summon, why should I be elden lord if my summons did the work for me, summons are an answer for an easy mode, so are buffs and Debuffs like a true rpg but they shouldn’t be relied upon to complete, the radahn fight makes me a little worried for the direction of the next game they make.
Lady Maria, Artorias, Gael have multiple playstyles in mind but radahn feels like it’s just summons in mind and not the player, their load or abilities
For as much as I love Malenia’s fight the waterfowl more so requires you to break her ai and tracking rather than, staggering, poise breaking, interrupting the wind up, smart rolling using the mechanics in the game. Radahn’s design also feels like the idea of let’s just add stuff and see if it’s possible for the player to figure it out. Phase 1 is great but phase 2 needed polish like almost giving me seizures. Malenia is super strong but also super weak to staggering by everything which gives that balance. I’ve played every one of the games since the og demon souls with all different classes and while there were frustrating moments as a certain class it’s always been balanced with classes in mind, with shorter punish windows like sekiro it removes some playstyles like heavy fat roll classes or big spell casters without trading that damage. Sekiros balance was that you have 1 playstyle parry and be aggressive, dark souls in extension elden ring always had creativity and theory crafting.
The normal person is going to go the path of least resistance, which is shield, two headed turtle talisman, quick bleed weapon, holy damage+physical damage negation to beat a boss
At that point I’m just playing Skyrim removes the challenge and just makes it boring.
The areas are gorgeous in view but rather shallow I don’t feel like there are any real secrets that are there or any wow moments, so much of the map is just empty with the atmosphere to soak in which they’ve always been fantastic at even in ds2
it’s amazing in lore and atmosphere but rather annoying in its gameplay and its replay-ability, the weapons are some of the most fun I’ve had but, just went to the base elden ring to play with and only want to fight Messmer in the dlc and maybe Rellana.

I personally loved the DLC as I've loved most Fromsoft things since Kings Field 2. But in general I think the popularity of them has been a double edged sword.
Sure you have new people coming in that people proport as being misinformed or normies. Fromsoft is going the way of Ubisoft. I’m afraid Souls games will become new Assassin’s Creed series: a pathetic joke built on mechanics that get recycled again, and again, and again. Miyazaki is high on his own farts if he thinks this is the way to develop the series.

The community (souls players) got so good that they can’t go backwards now . They’d have to reset the entire engine and come up with something new because the average player can beat a boss like malenia by just timing their dodges . So if the average player has caught up to the game difficulty what now?

While i recognize the DLC had its flaws, it also was able to give me that classic Elden ring experience of satisfying exploration i never got from the base game due to guides and spoilers. Elden ring was my first mainline From game, and i was spoiled out of my mind from the community when it first launched. If i could, I would’ve gone back and stopped myself.
But im grateful to the DLC, it gave me so many moments of excitement when i found new, exciting and cool stuff I could now use. I remember that first feeling of excitement when i found the two-hand talisman, thinking just how useful that would be. Aside from the new, novel weapon types (which are always going to be nice to find and use regardless) The bosses were a nice and refreshing challenge.
Going back to the base game feels like a cakewalk, and while i think there definitely IS design flaws in the DLC bosses (for example, bayles lightning breath jank, no hitting radhan being literally impossible without light roll, deflect tear or parries, some unavoidable attacks, gaius’ charge attack, etc) these issues aren’t beyond fixing and don’t soil the experience for me.
I wanted something I could explore, and something that would challenge me (someone who had roughly 700 hrs playtime before DLC dropped) adequately. And I got what I wanted.
My only real complaint is that the map definitely could be condensed, and maybe designed more intuitively. there’s so many side paths that are easily missable that lead to whole new areas. Cerulean Coast, as stated, is mainly large and empty Aside from the abyssal woods (they focused to much on the lantern madness thing gimmick and didn’t put much in there) but the legacy dungeon at the end still made it worth while, despite the area itself being underutilized.

Elden ring DLC asks you to collect all the fragments, stack defense on your character as high as you possibly can, have a good guard ability/quickstep/bloodhound step.
If a player is capable of making a build that can do the dlc reasonably, they already have the knowledge to cheese the dlc in a variety of ways.
Add on having basically no level design a being a borderline boss rush, it is repetitive and tiring. The design is outright begging people to abuse the broken methods because doing it in something that seems remotely fair is already 50% of the way to being an exploit to begin with.
Good way to judge these games is play with the default class/type of build. Knight, medium speed weapons, shield, high hp and armor. Dark souls 1 and 2 function very well when played this way (ignoring adp is great lol), dark souls 3 works extremely well and is the most fun way to play the game to me. Elden ring base game feels like they intend this style, the shield weaves into the movesets of the bosses very well and your weapon and skill have good damage, speed, and stagger. But the DLC for elden ring even this basic and reputable playstyle isnt enough when it was in every other game, that is the sign that it is different then the previous times.

    • @lordptk4115
      @lordptk4115 12 дней назад

I mean you can still do the DLC with that "default" build.
But why would you? Elden Ring (like all the other games to varying degrees) is not only an action game, but also an RPG. A whole range of different build, hundreds of weapons/spells etc. The bosses and enemies have distinct weaknesses and strength and so on. I think Fromsoft expects an endgame character to use some of the tools available to them to conquer the DLC. And I think thats totally fine to expect since it IS an RPG. As long as it is still reasonable to beat the game with a much more limited build. But guess what that's still totally possible (even though it may be a little more difficult than before)

You didn't like the simple, straightforward DS3 bosses like Midra and the Putrisent Knight, and you didn't like the complex, challenging bosses with varied movesets. You didn't like the delayed-attack, slow-paced bosses that run away, and you didn't like the fast-paced fights either. What the hell exactly do you want? Complaining about the stones and that there aren't enough rewards while not changing your twin blade almost the whole playthrough, dismissing the arsenal of new weapons, incantations, and sorceries that filled the map. Out of the offinsive tools that you chose not to engage with cool enemies that you called tedious and mini bosses that you hated ,lore drops here and there and breathtaking visuals wich are the point in itself if you asked me ,and the puzzle on how to get there other than these tgings i don't even think the game has anything else in it to reward you with ,so not sure what you were expecting exploring there ,you could have mentioned a better reward system for you but no , the map is big it connects areas in a more logical a way makes it less artificial ,it conveys more aspects of the lore more naturally and every way the camera points is a painting worth pondering upon ,and some people respect this novelty ,so no can't give ya a smaller map for you to have a more condensed items per square inch and a bullet fast playthrough, it is not the preferable experience for those who liked ash lake in ds1 and kept coming for more . Most of your criticism was conveyed in words like: "I was not impressed," "It was meh," "Didn't really hit me that much," "I didn't feel like it." Playing the game on ng+7 making you feelings based half opinions the more extreme on being feelings based wich is fine in ofitself , but you know man , having such a negative veiw on the game overall without much of an actual reasoning behind it , you fell just burnt out and just not having fun with the game , Maybe, just maybe, you just don't like these kinds of game anymore.
