      Napoleon never gave up. He felt he was destined to achieve great things. He was like a real time superhero. He was a workaholic and a master of his own mind. He could sustain focus for long periods of time and then jump from one thing to another withouth losing a context. He was like Elon Musk on steroids.

In the end he lost it all but his legacy is still felt to this day and essentially made France, Europe what it is today.

      @@CRM-114 "he certainly caused lots of deaths" A huge part of Europe was already at war with France following the revolution, later during Napoleon's rule the seven coalitions were all funded and supported by Britain. The British hold as much responsability, excluding the invasion of Spain and the Russian campaign. I won't pretend he was a saint but he was no genocidal maniac either, you'll often see Anglos calling him a 19th century Hitler which is ridiculous. He was an imperialist, like all the other major powers at the time yet you only ever see people bash Napoleon and not Spain, Britain, Prussia, Portugal... list goes on.
      "how has he made the world a better place?" If you want to see the positive impacts of his rule, you need to look at his internal politics. He reformed institutions and education, creating a structure France still uses to this day. He promulgated the civil code, a pillar of French society as well as numerous other reforms. You might say he only shaped France, except many others took inspiration from his policies as a statesman and used them as a basis to build new states and nations, paving the way for much of what modern society is today.

  • @citizenVader
    @citizenVader 6 месяцев назад +10

    It's not the first time Ridley Scott butchers his own work, but you need to know what is hilarious to some people. It's the seriousness of a human without a care about what he makes because Scott will always tilt towards what he can earn when he knows the amount of work he has done is not paying off. It took him how many cuts before bladerunner was in his vision, and Black Hawk down was just another travesty without much reality in it.
    This is a movie that is made by a man who has already visited the era in his work, and I hate to say this, but you need a French director as a minimum to make this believable. Napoleon is still the most successful conquer on the field in newer history, and that is just not acceptable to some people even today. The victors write history, and this is one of those examples.

      @bearsuitClan Ridley Scott addressed this from an earlier conversation himself. His take on Napoleon is meant to be on the personal level and not so much in terms of his policies and what the other 10,101 books already have written about him. But he still missed it so much as even scholars aren't following the movie. Napoleon comes over as an unhinged horndog, and this is the man who even his enemies didn't dare to kill after his defeat.

      I personally don't mind the English speaking accents since after all it is a film made by an English speaking production for an English speaking audience. Also Napoleon apparently kept his thick Corsican accent throughout his life which would've been distinctive in French society so having a sole American in the film who plays Napoleon kind of shows that detail, similar how in the Death of Stalin the cast had varying accents to show how culturally diverse the USSR was.
      My issue is it seems everyone, including Austrian and Russian characters, in the clips I've seen all speak English with "British" accents where I'd much prefer they put on an accent of spoke in their respective languages to distinguish them from the French instead of everyone having a "British" accent.
