Holy ... The National are without a doubt the best American band right now. And Bryan Devendorf is without a doubt one of the best drummers in the world! His ability to play complex rhythms with masterful ease and precision is extraordinary.
This is the best song to listen to while traversing the tree lined country roads of Ohio. I drive through Sugarcreek recently that this song took me somewhere otherworldly.
Young whippersnapper lol ! Seen them twice. What a great band.. Eating supper in Asheville before the concert a few years ago and they were a few tables away.
Gosh - how lucky was that audience - A tiny Irish church in Dingle - one of the most beautiful places on earth - The National must have loved it too... Amazing.
Me too. I lived in Ohio for a few years but this song just for some reason gets me all emotional. Absolutely love it. was so glad to be able to see it performed live a few years back
A decade may have passed since I first heard this track, and rarely have I been hit with that knockout punch, but this does the trick every single time. Sublime...period. ✌️✌️💎💎🕺🕺🥰🥰
This is one of those songs that was 'meh' the first time I heard it and is now one of my favorite songs, from one of my favorite albums. funny how that happens, but sometimes the best songs take a little time to hit you.
de mis nuevas favoritas, tanto como 1979 de smashing pumpkins, estilos diferentes pero muy melancolicos...estoy conmovido y a la vez fascinado. esto me llega muy profundo.
Hard to believe just how much is going on in this song. Live performances really make the horns and guitar work shine. As an Ohioan, I can tell you that the floors are surely falling out from everyone I know.
I was born with features of VACTERL in Cleveland in 1957...this song resonates with me more than I can possibly relate....I truly was carried to Ohio in a swarm of bees. VACTERL When the angel of death visited my cradle, slid his smooth scythe across my smooth, cherub cheek - whispered some dark thing, some hiss, into my ear... I smiled back... born in a black pool and then, and there, God stared down - his granite brow furrowed... with interest. Gerald Long 3/9/2020 *POEM
I saw the brass in the background and wondered...huh? Then I remembered the LP mix that had some semblance of orchestral undertones to many of the songs on 'High Violet'. And I thought the horns worked very well-and a different ear for a familiar song is often amazing; like this is.
Stand up straight at the foot of your love I lift my shirt up Stand up straight at the foot of your love I lift my shirt up I was carried to Ohio in a swarm of bees I'll never marry but Ohio don't remember me Lay my head on the hood of your car I'll take it too far Lay my head on the hood of your car I'll take it too far I still owe money to the money to the money I owe I never thought about love when I thought about home I still owe money to the money to the money I owe The floors are falling out from everybody I know I'm on a bloodbuzz Yes I am I'm on a blood, buzz I'm on a bloodbuzz God I am I'm on a blood, buzz I was carried to Ohio in a swarm of bees I never married but Ohio don't remember me I still owe money to the money to the money I owe I never thought about love when I thought about home I still owe money to the money to the money I owe The floors are falling out from everybody I know I'm on a bloodbuzz Yes I am I'm on a blood, buzz I'm on a bloodbuzz God I am I'm on a blood, buzz
Wicked song great live version 2. I got some live acoustic tunes on here put in Ross Heathorn merry go round or Ross Heathorn flattery or Ross Heathorn spoilt or tides or dig it all. Be nice 4 some feedback people. Theres like 30 plus songs must be 1 you dig people peace and love x
Wanna know the truth? Matt is a terrible live singer. Yes, he is a baritone and that's good, but seriously, it's no excuse. His vocal is weak or at least sounds weak due to a lack of training. And yeah, that's why I never attend live shows, they dissapoint me.
Chris kennedy seriously, I love their records, it's one of my favorite bands ever, but Matt really is a poor singer. I could only listen to him really drunk, otherwise I'd be ruining their good image in my memory. Some other bands like Wilco, Calexico, Spiritualized are amazing live and sound very professional. I just can't not see the lack of professionalism in Matt.
Chris Ducat so you are calling me an asshole because I have a different opinion than yours? Grow up, man. I understand when some pop singers have a mannered voice, like Bowie. But Bowie is different from Matt. Bowie is actually able to "catch" the notes with precision and clarity while maintaining his "raw" and reticient manner. And when one isn't able to do that, it sounds nothing more than a drunk karaoke howler. On the other hand, ignorance is bliss.
But the National are not just about Matt's voice - if he had a pitch perfect voice it would be ridiculous like Maroon 5 - they are one of the few bands left we can trust to deliver a great album and a live show - just brilliant music combined with great lyrics and a brilliant, interesting frontman. I don't get your point really. Music is truly on the wane and thank fuck these are here and having seen every major act bar Prince I would rate these in my top 10 ever.

6 years later and it's still true.

I hope you caught the Glastonbury set last night, sublime.
Gosh - how lucky was that audience - A tiny Irish church in Dingle - one of the most beautiful places on earth - The National must have loved it too... Amazing.
If you don't love this band I don't think I can be your friend....
friends!!
But fall in love
Guess I'll have to be your friend then
What if i like em, but I'm not in like with em?
It's ok if we're not friends, i respect everyone, and their rights to be wrong

Brilliant drumming, brilliant guitarwork and the Matt's baritone voice never ceases to amaze me.
+David A. Marin Totally agree
The drummer is doing the bus, but the rest get in board.
This song is. Everything. Never get tired of it. The drumming, vocals, guitar. Love it and this band

I could just watch Bryan drum all day. Such a compelling musician.

"bloody brilliant" is an understatement.
It's not just the song, the whole band is that way.
With respect to all the others in The National, this track is all about Bryan Devendorfs incredible drumming. He's phenomenal 👏🏼👏🏼🥁
What a fantastic performance
I love conducting concert band and orchestra music.
But this is just as special, and I love it. It's wonderful songwriting.
Amazing sonics rifts in the middle and end of the song.....:)BRILLIANT
best band on the planet at moment!!!!!!!

Fantastic performance! I love this song anyway but this energy in this is way better than the studio version

VACTERL
When the angel
of death
visited my cradle,
slid his smooth
scythe across
my smooth, cherub
cheek -
whispered
some dark thing,
some hiss,
into my ear...
I smiled back...
born in a black pool
and then, and there,
God stared down -
his granite brow furrowed...

People saying the National is “dad rock”. Are you out of your mind? The National is closest thing to Radiohead going right now.
Own money to the money to the money I own. That simple.
