This is exquisite work and I'm so pleased you didn't turn this into a changing table or a dry bar! Love Art Deco and you nailed not only the beautiful piece, but also the......ambiance? The FEELING of that golden era, when anything was possible, as long as you did it with STYLE! A much more modern Era than this one in some ways. Incredible restoration and excellent work! 😮😊❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Excellent job! I love the Black and gold detail work on the base. It reminds me of an old radio. Art Deco designs were so cool. Even the writing styles in advertising from that era was really attractive. I have a suggestion for an orbital sander for you. I work in a cabinet and millwork shop and I am the main finisher there. We use 5" Mirka electric palm sanders in the finishing department. I like them because they have a low profile, they're really ergonomic and you can dial them up and down to any speed you want. They also have a much better orbital action than your contractor grade orbital sanders, so they actually get the work done faster. I always found the Makita, Bosch and Dewalt sanders a bit top heavy for my taste. They can be quite tiring after a few hours of prep sanding or primer sanding. Best thing about the mirka is that you can easily hook them up to a vacuum cleaner. Ours have vacuum cleaners that the tool can plug into so it will turn on when the trigger is pulled. They are a bit pricey, but you will make the money back in the time saved and the decreased strain on your wrist and arm. Keep up the good work. I'm looking forward to more projects!
This is very helpful, thanks so much! Will save these notes. ...and yes, radios from the era are fascinating. We're experimenting on ideas for a couple of them, actually.
Thank you a thousand times over for an Art Deco furniture channel. I drool over these pieces. I recently sold a massive vanity & mirror with chiffarobe. Unfortunately, it was too large for me to work on inside so I sold it. After she loaded it she said this would be her first piece. The veneer had chipped in many places from being in a barn ( western OK) & I wanted to cry. She said she would leave what she could & paint the rest. Restored versions with lesser mirrors were selling for $3000. You give me hope there are people out there finding & saving these works of art. Funny they were believed to be inexpensive pieces of furniture for people at the time are now some of the most stunning. Your talent brings out the beauty.
Congratulations are in order for accumulating more than 1000 subscribers in only two weeks, Matt. Well done! I told you dad well over a year ago that his mad skills are marketable on RUclips and you have proved that right from the get go. Put that together with your understanding of video production makes for the perfect combination of ingredients for success! People from all over the world are loving it!
Congratulations on the work! I'm Brazilian and I'm always amazed at all the dedication you show with your revitalization work. A "hi" straight from Brazil.
My dad taught me that clamp trick. You are using the same orbital that I use, and I think it's great. I use it to sand tops of dressers and sometimes I'll wear through the veneer on the edge or something, but then color it in to match, so it's quick and effective. You would call that steel wool 4 ought (0000). (I had to look up how to spell it and that's what came up.)
I can’t believe it has taken me all these years to find your channel. I just love anything Art Deco. This is a spectacular dresser. What a beautiful job you did with it. Definitely subscribing to your channel. I just wish I could buy some of the pieces you’ve restored. But I live in another country.
I'm loving this channel too! I don't collect Art Deco furniture, but I've always been drawn to its uniqueness . Your work here, shows just how beautiful these pieces could be with some imagination, elbow grease and lots of painter's tape. I'm sure that chest of drawers never looked so good, even when new. The skyscraper on the sides is genius, they made me want to put on a Joan Crawford movie lol. Keep up the good work. Looking forward to your next video.😅
Your skyscrapers took a beautifully restored piece over the top. I love it. My eye was drawn to the skyscrapers first; then I noticed the restored detailing on the front. Outstanding!
Question: Do you think the gorgeous handles were originally all gold? I thought I noticed a variation of color in the ad. Side note: I’ve got a waterfall dresser that’s nice but doesn’t hold a candle to what you’ve done!
@@marthamiller-plumb1059 thank you kindly for the feedback! We assume that the handles were originally painted gold on this dresser. We could tell that the previous owner had repainted them gold at some point, so we buffed them and then reprinted them. When they are solid brass, we just leave the natural metal visible, but that wasn’t the case here.
This channel is going to rocket and I'm happy that I've been here since the first video. Might be a good idea to start working the algorithm by asking questions that everyone has an answer for. It the reason I'm in the comments now lol
If in 100 years no woman had ever cleaned it, I believe that to see its color you would have had to pick it like in a mine. Believe me, I'm a woman. But you are an excellent restorer, congratulations!!!
I’d love to know a bit about your crew. Family? How long have you been finessing furniture? Maybe you can share a bit of backstory in your next video. Nice piece that will live on for another hundred years. 👍
@@TheShizNat thanks! We are a father / son duo with a long history in furniture and the arts, and 2 years into focusing exclusively on Art Deco. We’ll cover some of this in future vids.
Love your work! Question: on top you put a brush on lacquer on top of the water based polyurethane. Why the switch? Was that to avoid a light sand before adding a second coat of polyurethane?
@@AskingSpot hi, thank you! Polyurethane has a little bit more durability than lacquer. So, for a surface like the top of the dresser, we are hoping to add a layer of protection. We are still experimenting with different methods, but this has been working so far.
My friend just completed a very shmilar dresser, hate to say the nasty word, but it was painted. She removed the handles and put them in her etsy store. They were very much like the ones you have here, but they had red, maybe colored inserts. Dont know how much she asking. Her store is, the Krafty kreech.
You DO know what "restoration" means right? This is a mutilation, not a restoration. It was in better shape before you started. You're obviously just another backyard chalkpaint specialist. 940 subs says it all.
