Dry Cleaning: Tiny Desk (Home) Concert
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 30 июл 2024
- The Tiny Desk is working from home for the foreseeable future. Introducing NPR Music's Tiny Desk (home) concerts, bringing you performances from across the country and the world. It's the same spirit - stripped-down sets, an intimate setting - just a different space.
Lars Gotrich | July 6, 2021
Up until now, Dry Cleaning's post-Brexit post-punk relied on a robust dynamism of jagged, thudding lushness and a speak-song voice. It's music that coos and quizzes at once. How energizing to hear Dry Cleaning recontextualize its established sound for a relatively subdued Tiny Desk performance from World of Echo, a record store in East London beloved to the British band.
Surrounded by tapes and vinyl - and framed by posters of Wipers and The Fall - the four members look cozy in the small space. Tom Dowse trades his effects pedals and electric guitar for an acoustic; its weird bends and weirder chords surprisingly complement the atmospheric keyboards and minimal beats of Nick Buxton, who's normally on drums. Lewis Maynard's bass doesn't throttle at this volume, but still grooves.
The bedroom-quiet arrangements of songs from its latest album, New Long Leg (plus "Viking Hair" from a previous EP), allows Florence Shaw's voice, an instrument of resolute deadpan, to bloom. Some might call her delivery wry, even disaffected - her lyrics non-sequitur - but here a sly inquisitiveness inclines a smile ("I'd like to run away with you on a plane, but don't bring those loafers") and burns a harsh memory ("Never talk about your ex / Never, never, never, never, never slag them off / Because then they know"). If Dry Cleaning's records are labyrinths of pulsing sound and droll poetry, think of this Tiny Desk (home) concert as the narrow path that lays bare the band's gnarled roots.

For someone who 'doesn't sing' her pitch and rhythm are perfect.
That's what signing is though right? It can be as unorthodox as it wants to be

Dry Cleaning is up to big things, the UK post punk scene is crazy right now!
Dry Cleaning are The Smiths of now, same Wit, exceptional songwriting. Can’t name one bad song, no bigger compliment.
The Smiths were my absolute favorite back in the 80's and I see a lot of people making comparisons with them, but I see Dry Cleaning as more comparable to the Fall, Gang of Four with some Jesus Lizard bass & some Sonic Youth thrown in. They are crazy good though and about the only band I have really gotten excited about in literally 30 years.
@@3ld919 oh I can totally see sonic youth! She really is kinda similar to Kim Gordon
The poster on the wall says it all
@@nederlanditism1154 I totally agree! 100%
Idk the singer reminds me of Jim Morrison lol
killer band. you can always tell if a band is the real deal if they still sound great when they go acoustic or change volume level. wish we didn't lose the bass as much at a few points but really dug this!
this version of Her Hippo with the eerie synths in the background is so much better than the original!
As a massive fan of the original I fully agree!
Completely agree
I thought it could not get better but it did
This is the definitive version of Her Hippo for me now. The synth just works so well
Not better but still amazing
You guys are a breath of fresh air. I embrace your storytelling and what seems to be improvisation. I am a believer in-' first thought best thought'
She used to suffer from depression and wrote her random musings to her scribbled drawings
On second thought, you're probably right.
This is the first time i heard this kind of music
And it's so good🙂
Check out black country new road next, it's great!
@@radiofloyd2359 Check out The Enablers and Slint if you enjoy this stuff!
Idles is the angry very of this.
@@OrthodoxRainbow Nah, they're more normal ish punk.
They're great, mind you, but they don't have the spoken word narrative appeal of these bands
My friend just turned me on to these guys and THIS version was my intro.
This is so sublime, I cannot even take it.
Gorgeous, free-form, arty freestyle, dark Saint Etienne, of course they’re on 4AD, they’ve restored my faith in bands and artists for 2022, te amo Manuel…..
It’d be cool if she made supermarket announcements.
And wrote fortune cookies.
Can you not?
Using only lyrics from these songs.
"Can every female thats currently bored and resorting to impulse buys of your favourite chocolate, please make their way to the French wine section."
That’s cool idea
Once in a while a band comes along that makes everyone else look like they joined the wrong queue. Fantastic.
I love this band in every format. This one is amazing. They are unique!
Chills down the spine for Viking Hair. Have listened lots to their debut LP but really nice to see them in person and semiacoustic.
Same! It changes the atmosphere of the songs, love it!
What? You actually choose to listen to this? This is the kind of thing people hear by mistake and never ,listen to it again.
her hippo , strong contender for 'song of the year'. Absolutely brilliant!
LEAFY! I love this song, I sing it every day. I made it my mission to learn it recently and I just love it. Thanks Dry Cleaning, you are my new favourite band!
Same frisson I got when I first heard The Fall, Joy Division, Pixies, Swell Maps, Stereolab...
confounding yet alluring. Can't put a finger on why, but keep coming back
I love this performance! The 'full on' band versions as heard on their brilliant new album are superb, but in this setting and with this instrumentation, the songs take on yet another life. Dry Cleaning are the most exciting band out there right now for me x
Been listening to them on repeat for weeks. Love this band.
what an unexpected treat! love this band so much, great fun to see a different spin on these songs
Waking up to this makes me afraid that NPR is harvesting my dreams
Nick on keys instead of drums = magic. Top vibe. My fav band lately and surely discovery of the year.
I totally agree. this Viking Hair version = magic indeed
A fantastic band. I'm loving the acoustic direction they took, and I love what the "drummer" brings when he is not behind his kit. The vocals are up in the mix too, I think, and i love it; her voice is another instrument. I hope you all can come to southern California once things are back to normal!
Poet backed by a killer band. Note the Fall poster.
I love what Dry Cleaning does when they're fully plugged, but this really shows them in a wonderfully different way. And this is just a great way to get a clear sense of just how interesting the interplay between Florence Shaw's words and the musical layers is. Amazing set. And Viking Hair, which is really one of the "songs" that defines the group for me is brought to new kinds of hallucinatory clarity here.
Yesssss I'm so happy they did this. I love their sound.
Love this band. “Good Luck, Band”
I don’t know why I dig this but I dig this..
I know what u mean. If you where to describe then to me. I'd not like it. But there's something very close to insanity about it. Are you a fan of peep show ?
I discovered them about 5 months ago. At first I thought it was whatever. Now they're my new faves. Go check these songs out plugged in. Amazing!
Loving her delivery and their whole vibe!
Leafy made me emotional. The album helped get me through lockdowns and stuff. To hear it broken down like that was powerful x
Love the vibe! Like Pet Shop Boys meets Depeche Mode in the middle of a desert and viewed through a mirage
nah not really
They've also been described as Sonic Youth meets Slint
Love them; so glad to see them here
Nico, Anne Clark and now Ms. Florence Shaw. The new trinity of women chanting. I love all three. Amazing what facets this music still gives us.
you are forgetting Laury Anderson
*Laurie
I gotta see this band live. Had their album on repeat for a while. I couldn't have thought they would be this great live.
They supported Amyl & The Sniffers when I saw them at Heaven. It was brilliant!
Wish they played Scratchcard Lanyard but it’s okay I’m rockin wit this
what a wonderful thing to see them on tiny desk (finally)!! oh how lovely it is to hear these songs with an acoustic guitar, a different type of sound but still angry scrappy songs
Yesss 🖤 Dry Cleaning 🤝 World of Echo
what is world of echo??
@@liquidpebbles7475 World Of Echo is the shop they're playing in during this session. They talk a little about it around 5:37
Awesome. Soooo fresh! Way cool. 'I'm in love'.
I feel like I’m in a continuation of Coney Island Baby…. It’s freaking magical ❤️❤️❤️❤️
i love how much i loved this
loving these new versions!!!
Come to Sweden again, the twix sit happened here. We love you all!!! Dry Cleaning
I want a version of the album done in this stripped back style. What a treat.
So beautiful and melancholy. A curveball that totally works 👌
I feel like I just listened to a mid-life crisis... and I loved it!!
Dry Cleaning are so good!! I've had their new album on repeat for weeks now... 😁
Best band of 2021
Fancy the pants off the laconic one….nice little view of Mark E Smith every now and then, handsome sod. Decent debut album chaps!
The bass player 👍👍
This is lovely.
i fought the style of this spoken vocals stuff... like when does she start singing? but.... then i started listening without thinking and i focused on what she was actually saying. it's like listening to a story lol idk how to describe it but it's refreshing. I can hear and feel the emotions now, almost like the lyrics are being highlighted as she says them.... idk.
youtube comment's sections are a strange place to be sometimes.
- my thoughts -
It's like a spoken word poem, check poetry out if you're into it
Usually when listening to them while driving I just switch off = Flo's voice is very soothing, I don't focus on lyrics. Magic.
her vocal performance in this rendition of Her Hippo reminded me of Baxter Dury's album Nightchancers
Yeah man - Nightchancers is mega
I knew she was reminding me of someone! Love them both.
Love them ❤️ this was awesome! 👏👏
Been waiting for this one
Love this version of Leafy so much.
I bloody love this. Thank you 🙏
Loving these versions! Leafy is particularly good.
Why don't you want oven chips now?
That's just child talk.
it's a Tokyo bouncy ball
Thanks very much for the Twix
I became a bit emotional listening to these “stripped synth versions”…! I can’t properly explain why.
Marvellous..!
Fun to hear a new take on songs from one of my faviorite new bands, but it would be a shame if this was the only Dry Cleaning songs you hear. Be sure to listen to the originals to fully appreciate the juxtaposition between the muted lyrics and thrashing instrumentals.
It’s my favourite post punk album of the year so far, maybe aoty in general
This sounds awesome as a lo-fi acoustic version! 😍
This is cool af - thank you Tiny Desk
Sounds so good guys! Really interesting to hear this stripped down version of your songs.
Amazing band, I'm hypnotized
Love these guys!!
Beautiful
Love dry cleaning and i was lucky enough to see them in Norwich earlier this month.
exactly what i needed after a long day. 🙏
So good. Thanks for this
Just sublime.
So great to hear original art in this tired old game.
YAYYYYY I LOVE DRY CLEANING
Random thoughts plus trippy instrumentation equals success👌
This is so wierd. I love it😄
Entendu sur une radio rock locale, j aime beaucoup la voix de Florence et la rythmique des chansons. Ce groupe mérite une plus grande diffusion.😉
Cool band, love them so much❤️
This is perfect! Please NPR invite Black Country New Road, Black Midi, Squid and Shame for a Tiny Desk concert!
Black midi would be very cool
Squid for sure
Nah
This man on the guitar is my model haha what a beast
Absolutely brilliant!
Maravillosos!!.. I love this!!! 👏👏👏👏👏
hello from greece!total dry cleaning in my soul!
Whoa this is unexpected. I never heard this kinda musical style before.. hmmm..
Love this! Great performance
The guitarist is very talented! These guys have a lot of potential
The singer's voice reminds me of Laura Marling (my favourite artist since > a decade), but a very unique style. I kinda like this. Good thing these people found each other and turned that strange vibe into music.
Reminds me of Baxter dury in her style of talking/singing.
@@Sweenah94 yes!! so glad someone else made that connection.
Best band around right now.
Wow, her hippo 👌🏾
this is amazing
Incredible!
Just absolute class.
Love the keyboard and the acoustic guitar
I'm in love ...❤️🇬🇧
This is a moment in life that you can repeat
Killing it just now. I tell everyone about them when they ask about new bands.
Thanks! Great!
Am I the only person thinking that The Fall's poster there on the right hand side is very appropriate?
No
Don’t be clever.
I like to imagine this is how Flo pictures the band always sounding like in her head to achieve her mood in a live setting, when she casts those dismayed looks at the lyrics on the music stand
Wonderful set up by the way 😊
i love this band
Brilliant!
THANKS NPR!
