  • Approach along the beautiful Crete shoreline and landing on runway 27 at Heraklion Nikos Kazantzakis international airport (HER/ LGIR), Crete Island, Greece. With ATC (air traffic control) audio. Cockpit view Airbus A320. Filmed in 4k.
Please checkout also this video: • Airbus A320: Heraklion...
It shows an approach to Heraklion taped with 4 cameras with views inside and outside of the cockpit.
Due to the usual wind situation at Heraklion airport, runway 27 is the runway which is most of the time in use. The runway elevation is 81 feet and the runway shows up as situated on a steep rising rock in the water. This makes the landing a little challenging because shortly before you overfly the runway threshold, you are over water and your radio altitude is 200 feet, just moments later you are over the runway and your radio altimeter shows about 100 feet less. From the pilots perspective, it looks like landing on an aircraft carrier. This is also the reason because a harder than normal landing may happen at Heraklion more often than at the most other airports.
There is no precision approach, like an ILS (instrument landing system), available. Standard approach is the RNAV approach 27, which is based on GPS signals. If the weather permits, you also may be cleared for a visual approach. If the plane does not have a GPS on board available, it may fly a VOR approach, which is based on a VOR (VHF omnidirectional range) navaid located at the airport. .
After finishing the instrument part of the approach, a PAPI (precision approach path indicator) helps the pilots to stay on the right descent path. The PAPI at runway 27 guides the pilots on a 3.0 degrees glidepath to the runway, but the glide angle of the RNAV approach is 3.4 degrees. If a pilots wants to follow the PAPI after reaching the minimum descent altitude of 830 feet, he or she has first to increase the descent rate until seeing 2 red and 2 white lights on the PAPI indicator and then the descent rate needs to be reduced to follow the 3 degrees glide in accordance to the PAPI. The PAPI indicator is located on the left side of the runway.
Winds form southerly directions with more than 20 knots make the approach even more difficult: Due to the rising terrain south of the aerodrome, the wind may be very gusty and cause severe turbulence in this case.
The runway is 2714 meters long and 45 meters wide. This can accomodate almost every modern passenger plane.

At 2:55 the plane flies over Kokkini Hani. I even see the supermarket where I used to shop when I lived in this "village".
I really liked Crete, but even the prices in grocery stores, due to the peculiarities of logistics, hit the tourist budget a lot. Add to this the buses (large and air-conditioned) that run at any time, but not on schedule at stops. Lack of soups that my gastric stomach needs. And crazy heat.
Before Crete, I spent the summer in Montenegro. And although a couple of times I was almost deceived by the locals, I want to come there a second time. The second time in Crete somehow do not want to.

I get why some folks *never* want the music, and I don't usually, but occasionally it makes for a more relaxing and chilled out viewing. And this time I definitely approve. Very pleasant.
I wonder why the minimums are so high at airports like this. Lanzarote is the same. Anyone know?

    • @ApproachandDepartureVideos
      @ApproachandDepartureVideos  2 года назад +2

Thanks for your feedback. The problem with the music is that the music I like may be completely different than the music some or most of the viewers like. We had lots of discussions about the music over the last years. So my decision was to produce new videos without any music and try to focus more on the cockpit audio.
The minimums are high because this is a non-precision approach and they have higher minimums in comparison to ILS precision-approaches. Lanzarote has an ILS approach with a low minimum if you arrive over the water, if you arrive straight in over the island, the minimums are high because it is also a non-precision approach.

@@ApproachandDepartureVideos - Thanks for the 'minimums' explanation.
I guess I could always turn the sound down and have my own music, but your choice on this video is pretty inoffensive I would have thought. It's not like it's 'death metal' or something. 😱
Anyway, I love your videos and I'm happy I discovered your channel.

Back in the stone ages, late 1970s, this was a routine stop for us in USAF AirEvac in the C-9A Nightingale. I loved this stop and many others in the area. But one day, we had a scary toward the town. Starting Takeoff roll from the cliff end we had a headwind, but by liftoff it was tailwind! It was CLOSE!😗 And we all could hear it in our voices and the tower controller’s voice! Don’t worry folks, there was nothing to see. 😎

"Winds form southerly directions with more than 20 knots make the approach even more difficult: Due to the rising terrain south of the aerodrome, the wind may be very gusty and cause severe turbulence in this case."
This is thank god quite rare - Prevailing winds on the island are N-W-N to only N.Southerly winds may occur in the winter months....

Despite having flown into and out of Heraklion and/ or Chania on an almost annual basis, I clearly remember my first visit to the island and my first approach to R27 back in August of 1990 - as we started the final parallel to the coast it was so beautiful outside, but according to our pilot (Flying a Britania 757 - 200) - misleadingly so.... his final cabin call was to let us know that "due to a southerly wind it will more than likely get very bumpy as soon as we get below the mountains, so please make sure (etc etc). As I spend most of the time in the Islands west I had no idea this weather feature was so rare in summer but, especially being only 12 years old it was one of the coolest approaches and touchdowns ever, the aircraft feeling like it was progressively dropping in increments towards the causeway through spoiler use as opposed to a set descent rate and / or use of a glide slope. Its crazy how these details stay with one for 30 years and I will miss the NK Heraklion Airport when it closes and moves south to Kasteli Airfield....

If I wanted to hear music I would have chosen a music video. Part of the excitement of watching this kind of videos is because people want to hear the roar of the engines and all the background sounds at the cockpit (which they don't in this video). Sorry but fingers down from me and aa grade of 3/10.
