Have had mine for about 2 weeks now... Love it, exactly what a 200$ standalone vr should be! Worth every penny. Oculus really did a great job, 4k experiences are almost endless off the net, even just using you tube! Can do a lot more than you think!
I don't think people in the comments understand what the Go is for. It's not meant to compete with the rift, vive, or PSVR. It's meant to be that untethered VR headset that just doesn't really exist on the market at the moment. It's not for the hardcore, and it's less clunky than the phone-tethered options like the Gear VR. The Switch analogy mentioned is a apt description for the headset.
What is "clunky" about the Gear VR? This is a phone tethered device, with basically an old Galaxy S7 built into it. The different is that you can't remove the S7, and its cheaper and uses LCD instead of OLED.
Got mine this morning, and I have to say the nay sayers have no idea and are speaking from a position of ignorance. I also have a rift, but even after using that for near 18 months, I am impressed by the Go and it's definitely giving a good seated VR expeience that is nearly on a par with the rift. Most of these it can't be VR because it's not 6 DoF are like someone saying a popular food or drink is disgusting when they have tried never tried it themselves, with many changing that opinion when they actually try it. As a seated VR experience (which is the Oculus recommended way to use it), it is extremely good for the price.
Been reading the comments here and I have been using an Oculus Go now for two weeks. Disclaimer: I own a company that produces VR applications for all kinds of applications, just not gaming. We develop for Vive / Vive Pro / Rift and mobile, including Gear VR, iPhone (only X is decent enough)/Android Cardboard VR. The big limitation of the Go is 3dof, but having said that, for all applications that 3dof is good enough for the Go is amazing. It easily outclasses all of the other mobile VR options out there. Of course it's far better than Cardboard VR but we also think it is much better than Gear VR. The whole device is optimised for VR and nothing else! The image is very very crisp and comes close to Rift and Vive. Latency is very low. Controller, while limited, actually works pretty well. We have tested some stuff we did for Gear VR on the Go and found that we can (and basically will have to) increase the level of detail again (we decreased it from Vive to Gear VR). Oh ... and it's very user friendly. Wrap-up: it's (far) better than any other mobile VR solution generally available at this moment and at an amazing price point!
GearVR doesn't use that full resolution, most software defaults to 1024x1024, and even if it manages to use something higher, the way the headset is designed, a major chunk of the screen is blocked off, especially on phones like my note 8, which is the reason I ordered Oculus Go instead even though it cost me more. That 72Hz is mainly for movies as it divides perfectly into 24fps, making the reason I got it (Netflix PlexVR and Bigscreen) pretty much perfect. You can hardly compare it to the vive pro, that's £1000+ just for the VR setup as you also need to buy the sensors and controllers, then throw in the 300 for wireless, then about another £800+ for the PC vs £200-250 for an all inclusive headset. In terms of bang for the buck its not bad at all. Its only real negative in my opinion being the lack of any storage expansion, hence me forking out the extra 50 for the 64GB version which is in itself a bit steep for 32GB, but at least gives the thing more longevity. Mind you if I didn't already have a rift, I would probably say 3 DOF is a bit of a bummer if you suffer from motion sickness, 6 DOF would mean your movement exactly match what you see, 3 DOF only match the direction you turn your head in, but this is £200 so you can't have it all.
I can see this being great for showing friends your 360 degree photos and videos. I have heaps of these from some holidays last year, so that will be my main reason for getting one.
I got it for media and what I would like to see is more games like MOSS and these 3rd person isometic style games on it. I love them even more than first person.
The Oculus Go works well for me as I am new to VR and want to experience it on a more casual basis. Perhaps in the future, after I have a better understanding of and more experience with VR, I may purchase a more expensive headset.
Well put together video indeed. Great text overlay and light effects. Let me know if you need any 3D for your next review! I bought my Go yesterday on impulse but I'm very excited. For someone in to VR but lacking a proper headset, this is the perfect way to start imagining the place VR will have in the future.
Have had the oculus go for a few weeks now and yes its worth the price. Great for surfing the net which it does very good and watching movies. There are alot of great things coming to use in the very near future for this head set.
Had mine for about 2 weeks, and I friggin love it! Everyone I show it to wants one too after they get their hands on it! Many good things about this unit. WiFi capability makes the content easily accessible to anyone with a home connection. Lots of free games and experiences, and the ones that do cost do not cost much. Almost all not over $9.99, and starting at $.99. It's also a perfectly affordable option to the more expensive units that put themselves out of reach to a lot of people. As an introductory to VR, it's also perfect. My mind's been racing since I got it thinking about the many applications they will be able to apply to VR technology in the future. The applications are endless! I highly recommend one if you have the means to get one. You shouldn't be disappointed!! 😃
Well with ALVR and a good home WLAN (5Ghz) you can use the Go as an alternative to the Rift or the Vive. Only problem is the controls, but games that work with a gamepad are fully playable. I play Skyrim VR on my Oculus Go and a XBox 360 Controller...
I've only had issues on a few occasions where I've moved around too much. For the most part I only take one or two steps in any direction before returning to my center and I never really have any problems with my cord. -Oculus User
6:20 - I bought the Samsung Gear VR headset (made by Oculus) when I bought my S9+. The SD845 has both the performance and improvement of battery life over the previous generation. Fast WiFi and LTE really let it go mobile. It has more APPs too, Android, Oculus and Samsung's VR all are supported (unlike a standalone non-Android headset). RUclips 360° videos are great *if* they are stiched correctly and recorded with a quality VR camera (decent lenses and resolution). Also the phone has positional tracking and camera passthrough so you really _could_ walk around and see where you are going using AR - once someone writes an APP (or I look around the strore more thoroughly and find an existing one). Lots to explore with the Android headset. Thanks for making this video, Rob
dtz1000 - I seem to remember seeing it, I'll double check next time I'm hooked up. The Oculus Rift does (which means Gear VR probably does). See URL: vr. google. com/earth/ (remove the spaces). I just downloaded it and added it to my library. Oculus treats Gear VR and Oculus Go as the same thing, AFAIK. So go users should be able to add it to their library - just a matter of searching through the menus for it, probably under "Internet". YT, Rob
I'm watching your review on the Go. I also own the Rift. The Rift is a much better device for gaming. As a multi-media device, the Go is fantastic! I can kick back, fully reclined on my bed or elsewhere, and watch a movie on as "large" a screen as I desire. at $199, the price point beats a tablet, and I don't have to hold the device while I lounge about.
You said it yourself. 1000 apps at a launch. That is a totally ridiculous number at the starting bell. Why in the world would you recommend to wait any longer for more software when you are only putting out 200 buck in the first place. Further, many of those games are free !
While the Go has a lower resolution than the Vive Pro, it has an RGB matrix instead of a Pentile matrix. Giving the screen far less screen door effect.
How much does a Galaxy S9 cost... yeah. Exactly. Oculus Rift is only $350 now. THat's INSANE considering a single VIVE controller costs $150 w/ shipping.
It runs on a Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 821 processor which you will find on some smartphones and tablets. Is the resolution better yes and from my understanding more field of view, but you still need a phone to operate it you just don't have to put a phone in it. I will stick with the Gear Vr for now.
your head being pinned in one spot is a neat demo ....I like it .....moving your head and walking around is a real vr experience and after a while 6dof mobile headsets will get just as chep
6dof worth nothing without software support. How many decent VR software can you name that uses 6dof on a mobile device? If the hardware's initial price is not low enough, there won't be a large enough starting user base to develop software for, if there won't be enough software available, people will not buy the hardware later regardless any price drop. Just check out how the game console market works: low initial hardware price and exclusive content at the start, that sells the hardware which boosts content development, new content sells more hardware and so on. That's exactly what Oculus is after: cheap hardware and a decent content library at the beginning to build a large user base as soon as possible to attract more developers and make the platform's growth self-sustainable.
Péter Kovács and 3dof can't give a real sense of presence in a virtual reality and should have died with the dk1 and cardboard and plastic headsets for 3dof phones........ at least with the next gen Go even the crappiest/cheapest headsets will get a cheap sd835 and 2 cheap cameras and 3dof will finally die and people will have access to a real vr experience
The headset is meant for entertainment, mainly media consumption, and just because it has games doesn’t mean it is a gaming headset like the Rift or Vive
It's possible to buy an oculus go today with a very low price such as 100$. Then, you can connect it to your computer using a software called ALVR. You will access to all steamVR games and app. Finally, you can buy kinect to make it 6-dof for steamVR for less than 50$ and two ps move controllers for 100$ (with driver4VR ~40$). Finally, you will have almost the same features than the oculus quest for less than 350$. Oculus Go is very very interesting if you like to tweak. And finally you can notice than the resolution of the oculus go is the same than the last oculus rifs s (however the oculus quest is better). It won't work perfectly but you will be able to play most of the games. I have it since some weeks. The problem with that helmet but also with the other oculus is the resolution. U have the screen just in front of your eyes, it s even possible to distinguish the pixels. The weight is also a problem. The perfect VR is not for today but it's a very good experience though.
Has facebook asked reviewers given free samples not to compare it to the obvious direct competitor, which is the Gear VR + S9? Both have the same game library, both are about the same portability, both use snapdragon processors (although the S9 is two generations newer), both are 3DOF with similar single controllers, soooooooooooooo....
Interesting review - you put a lot of emphisis on the games side when many others have mentioned this headset is much more suited as a content cosumer. Also Netflix is a big draw yet you negated that by saying you wanted Netflix to use the Oculus spaces model which is absolutely true but a bit harsh given it's quite a new device. The inclusion of the built in audio was brushed aside I felt even though it facilitates the ease of use and convenience which is the hallmark of the device and was true of the Rift as well. I think it was important you mentioned the battery life which could be a deal breaker for some. Finally the optics/lenses which are impressive I don't think you really convayed that unless you actually think the other phone displays have better lenses - in what? All in all some good aspects to your review and some so so. I think the consumers though will get a decent enough impression so with that said - well done!!
Officially not supported but early testers say that it actually works wile charging. Oculus will never recommend using it this way since there's always a small chance that a faulty lithium ion battery explodes on your face while charging and they obviously want to avoid any future lawsuit.
This is a nice video with great production, but it's like you're completely unaware of WMR Headsets. When you say "actually slightly better than PC headsets", you leave out the WMR range which has 2880x1440 or 2880x1600 resolution on them.
Thanks for the great review. Is the resolution considerably better than on the PSVR? I am considering buying the Oculus Go for RUclips and Netflix alone as long as the resolution is better. Thanks in advance :) Also is there a place in London one could try it first, or if you know where I could order an Oculus Go please.
Hey Michael. Yeah the resolution of the Go (2560 x 1440) is a pretty decent step up from PSVR (1920 × 1080). I'm not sure I'd buy it just for video watching though. The Netflix app is really cool, but there's no RUclips support yet that I've seen. Hopefully if it sells well then it'll get more video apps in the future. I'm not sure of any shops that are showing off demo units, but you can buy the Go direct from Oculus's website!
I will say this and I'm not speaking from a position of ignorance as I've owned my Oculus Go device for well over 4 months and am still not able to purchase any "to buy" apps including any of theirs (oculus go) I'm fairly disappointed in the device but more so with the company, as I've contacted them multiple times about the "can't calculate tax" that keeps coming up instead of letting me buy any number of different apps, my advice would be to not buy this device until they resolve this issue.
Hi, my wife has dry macular degeneration, her centre vision has gone, if she stands close to our 40 inch tv she can see clearly . Would this enable her to see, she watches tv she does not play games I do :)..we are in our 80s. If this could work and run from tv it would be great . Any medical people or manufacturers could give more info. Thanks for a great show gentleman
@@ethanenright1143 Hi, thanks for the reply ,I have mentioned this to the medical people we meet, checking my wife's condition consultants etc, they look at me as if I am crazy. You would think their answer would be, I must try that. "Mine would be", we need an Elon Musk in the medical world.
VR chat is old-fashioned...hehe not really but there are better alternatives out there you can use on the Go including vTime and AltspaceVR. Altspace is epic and there's so much to do in there.
@@ima.do.stuff5 bruh. I can do that on my PC without having a chunky device on my face. If you want it to be all big or whatever you can easily get a decent projector for the same price and set up a home theatre. Its not even that much more expensive to just get a quest.
I hope you can help me out with this I'm planning on buying one of these VR headsets.. I do own the Galaxy note 8 my question is would it be better for me to get the oculus pro or the gear VR with the controller.. please help.
Thanks for the review :) I have one question if You dont mind :) do You notice any drift on Go , after some time using it? I mean do You need recenter the position when You watching a movie for example ;) Cheers! VRMQ
haha it may be better than gear VR but this is nothing compared to the vive or oculus hell not even the psvr, this coming form the oculus is like stepping back intime tech wise when it comes to moving around
Is this really standalone or does it require a phone to be connected to use it. I understand you dont use the phone for your screen but if it has to be connected wirelessly to run the OS then it is not a standalone headset
If Go has even higher resolution than rift. Does that mean they can upgrade rift for a higher resolution in the near future as well? Are oculus rift worth getting at the moment?
Oculus Rift is the best price/performance VR solution at the moment if you already have a VR ready PC. There are better quality, but more expensive HMDs (Vive Pro) or cheaper (wmr headsets), but Rift is the sweetspot: has the most content, not too expensive and has very good image quality. Vive is better on roomscale tracking but if you don't want a play area bigger than 2.5x2.5m (most people use 2x2m) the 2 sensors gives proper tracking which can be improved later with a 3rd one for $50.
the rift is 2 years old now they can bump up res quite a bit if they want to but it's not clear when the next version will be coming ....maybe middle to late 2019.....and obviously at that point u will need a powerful video card
Yeah I think you're right about it not being worth it if you have a Pixel. You can either spend £100 on the Daydream View to turn the Pixel into a VR headset, or £199 on the Oculus Go. You've already got the hardware, so why spend more than you need to?
Draken X just what I was wanting. Love my gear vr but so much work cleaning my phone screen. Inserting it. Cleaning the lens. To much hassle. The go is a nice solution to that.

I'm first buying a oculus go then oculus rift
I wonder how much better is the screen door effect than gear/s7 and will it take expanded memory through the usb port?
As far as I know that USB port is just for charging, but I'm sure some ingenious modder is going to find another use for it soon.
If you have weaker sight in one eye would it still be worth getting one?
You should checkout the Melodyvr app.... Amazing!
If you wanna watch Netflix with your friends just download BigScreen app
can i use use the games already purchased for gear vr 2016
yes
Ya
Where can I try an Oculus Go before purchasing one in Scotland?
Can I use an external battery or charge while using Oculus GO? Just in case I want to watch a longer movie.
Can an external battery be used to extend the run time? I can see a 5000ma usb supply in a case hung on the back like some of my head lamps use.
Officially not supported but early testers say that it actually works wile charging. Oculus will never recommend using it this way since there's always a small chance that a faulty lithium ion battery explodes on your face while charging and they obviously want to avoid any future lawsuit.
@@kpbendeguz It's actually because that can cause the oculus go to overheat and possibly stop working..
Still gunna get the vive
Do you have to pay for the content.?
This is a nice video with great production, but it's like you're completely unaware of WMR Headsets. When you say "actually slightly better than PC headsets", you leave out the WMR range which has 2880x1440 or 2880x1600 resolution on them.
Does it work with an iPod Touch or iPad?
The begin question, can you connect to your computer VR games?
Is this ok when wearing reading glasses..I use 2.0 dioptor.
Can you use the headset while connecting to power outlet?
Cheers and thanks Jon
Hi Jon, can you download content from the Netflix app on the Oculus Go so you can watch it without an internet connection?
What about older phones like galaxys6 edge
No the GO was ment to GO everywhere you go,..and without a pc
I will say this and I'm not speaking from a position of ignorance as I've owned my Oculus Go device for well over 4 months and am still not able to purchase any "to buy" apps including any of theirs (oculus go) I'm fairly disappointed in the device but more so with the company, as I've contacted them multiple times about the "can't calculate tax" that keeps coming up instead of letting me buy any number of different apps, my advice would be to not buy this device until they resolve this issue.
Can it be set up using a PC? I don't own a smart phone.

I don't want it for games or animated or virtual videos, I want it for real-life experiences that make you feel you are there.
Do the games I bought for gear vr transfer or do I have to rebuy then?
Great review!
was this filmed in sheffield? I recognise the yellow bikes lol!
problem with oculus go: cant play VR chat.
VR chat is old-fashioned...hehe not really but there are better alternatives out there you can use on the Go including vTime and AltspaceVR. Altspace is epic and there's so much to do in there.
Planefan 08 ... Nothing can compare to VRC.
For all you oculus go haters just to let you know that you dont always need "VR chat" you can litteraly watch Netflix or yt or something
@@ima.do.stuff5 bruh. I can do that on my PC without having a chunky device on my face. If you want it to be all big or whatever you can easily get a decent projector for the same price and set up a home theatre. Its not even that much more expensive to just get a quest.
@@Yipper64 ain't it like 500 for the quest and 180 for the go
I hope you can help me out with this I'm planning on buying one of these VR headsets.. I do own the Galaxy note 8 my question is would it be better for me to get the oculus pro or the gear VR with the controller.. please help.
Don't put question marks in headlines. The short answer is no.
Is the oculus rift go better than the ps4 vr?
Can i play Iphone games using this VR?
This is great for non gaming VR. Oculus Go has no Touch controllers and doesn't play real VR Games.
you can likely ling a joypad, plus most mobile VR games only use the 1 controller anyway if they use a motion controller at all.
Kind of funny how most reviewers don't talk about VR porn on it, knowing that's why most people buy one in the first place.
Thanks for the review :) I have one question if You dont mind :) do You notice any drift on Go , after some time using it? I mean do You need recenter the position when You watching a movie for example ;) Cheers! VRMQ
Can you catch viruses from browsing the web, or it has protection ?
What about people who wear glasses would you have to take your glasses off
You do understand that you’re not supposed to use the VR as long as 3 hours anyway right?
I love my oculus go ♥️
Anyone else laugh at the title before even clicking the video?
Duck yeah I did one year later 😂
Has a better resolution than pc headsets, finds text hard to read due to the resolution of the headset...... fucking nailed it mate
I have the #Quest2
This one is not a gaming headset, is to watch movies, is rare that a movie outlasts 2 hours ! it is fine!
haha it may be better than gear VR but this is nothing compared to the vive or oculus hell not even the psvr, this coming form the oculus is like stepping back intime tech wise when it comes to moving around
didnt mentioned most important thing is memories. NO sd card option is just ridiculous
"Complete VR experience".... I think not, need the 6dof
That will cost you double, its called the Lenovo Mirage, and even then few Daydream apps support 6 DoF.
HTC Vive Focus
Suit yourself. Just got a Go, I barely noticed the 3dof
@@meh78336 also the quest which will be better (most likeley)
Is this really standalone or does it require a phone to be connected to use it. I understand you dont use the phone for your screen but if it has to be connected wirelessly to run the OS then it is not a standalone headset
It's completely standalone, to the point that you have to load all content ON the device through your pc.
Is this good for vr chat ?
Pirate Cat You cant use it on your PC...
@@Nipponing You can
If Go has even higher resolution than rift.
It's Stand alone unless you don't have a smart phone to set it up, Why didn't they add a PC setup? kinda stupid in my opinion.
Does your Oculus Rift friends show up on your Oculus Go ?????????
Yes, they do and you can hang out with them in your Oculus Room with your Go.
So you can't connect to your pc , I don't really see the point as I have a google pixel
No one , just that no one's mentioned it doing that .... I've seen like 4 videos just to be sure
Yeah I think you're right about it not being worth it if you have a Pixel. You can either spend £100 on the Daydream View to turn the Pixel into a VR headset, or £199 on the Oculus Go. You've already got the hardware, so why spend more than you need to?
Ima wait tell the oculus quest
PigXPower k
This is cute, but where is Oculus answer to the Vive Pro? This is not real VR.
So basically it's a Samsung Gear VR without the need for a phone.
Draken X just what I was wanting. Love my gear vr but so much work cleaning my phone screen. Inserting it. Cleaning the lens. To much hassle. The go is a nice solution to that.
The killer apps come from Japan, and they are not apps, just videos.
Can You remove the top strap so it won't crush Your hair ?
RUclips hands + zombie background, manic loop. Can't take it any more out of here.
If you think the go is the best VR headset you clearly have not tried even the lowly Microsoft headset
Here comes the oculus quest which will probably be better then all of headsets, and then pc vr headset users will regret their investments.
100 degrees field of view feels dumb after a while
