This video outlines the basics of treating acne. In 90% of cases acne can be treated without seeing a dermatologist. Do not fall for the product sell as many laser clinics will try to SELL SELL SELL... this video will empower you with knowledge.

Dr Davin Lim I thought the Clarisonic was actually damaging to the skin barrier? I'm actually just being curious not facetious. I've watched so many skincare videos of course they aren't with a dermatologist but estheticians swear hands are the only thing that should go on the face. That's why I've never broken down and bought one :(

Thank you so much for being so flexible. Your patients are very lucky to have you. Dermatologists tend to be very ''black or white'' and suggest that only they can cure acne with all expensive treatments and peeling without realising that not everyone can afford their countless treatments. None of my dermatologists have EVER explained all this you have just explained. Thank you.

  • @catherine7890

Hi. Thanks for another great video. I consider myself to be an expert acne sufferer. I have tried everything and taken 2 courses of roaccutane and then long term low dose roaccutane. I just couldn't do it anymore.
I'm glad you mentioned the tea tree oil. I "diagnosed" myself with demodex mites a while back. I had watery eyes and my tears were itchy. I was also reading about the relationship between demodex mites and rosacea. I decided to give the tea tree oil a try. I am sooo glad I did.
I used 5% tea tree ointment (not cream) every night for 4 weeks. I applied it all over my face including my eyelids and base of eyelashes. Also in ears and down ear canal.
I had an amazing result. Almost as good as roaccutane or better in some ways because your skin initially gets worse on roaccutane. The ointment removed nearly every blackhead as well (except a few very small ones on my nose).
I now just use tea tree ointment maybe one night a month for maintenence.
I don't really know why it worked so well but it did. There are obviously many causes of acne but I suspect demodex mites may be one of them. My eye symptoms also resolved as well with this treatment.

Dr. Lim - looking forward to your hormonal acne video! Can you please include information for us older women who are struggling with multiple skin issues?
I am 43, and break out around the time of my period, mostly on my jawline and temples. (I’m not taking birth control.) But I’m also starting to see fine lines and wrinkles (especially around my eyes), along with dark spots. The sun is great for acne; it was my go-to treatment when I was younger. But obviously it makes the spots darker and ages the skin. It feels like we have to choose what to treat! Also, my neck is aging faster than my face, with the skin becoming loose and having a tissue paper appearance.
What do we do for our 40-something, multi-problem skin?
**Can treatments for normal people be used by people with Ehlers Danlos considering we have faulty collagen? Or do EDS patients need more specialized treatments?
Thanks in advance! Appreciate all your info!!

I had constant, disfiguring, and painful cystic acne from ages 12-28. I tried everything at the time except Accutane. It turns out it was my anti-perspirant. I stopped using deodorant/anti-perspirant and my active acne resolved in a few days. My skin is nearly perfect now. I can't find anything about it in the medical papers, but hope this might help others. Even if it's not your deodorant, it might be worth looking at other things that might eventually make its way to your face. I don't know if it was the chemicals in my body or if it was rubbing on to my bed sheets and then my face (or a combination). Thanks for your videos, Dr. Lim, it makes a difference that you care and are helping people treat strategically.

Both my husband and I have been on accutane; him for cystic acne that completely covered his face and scalp from his teens onwards (he should see you for scarring but he says scars are “manly”), me because I once had a couple of persistent smallish chin bumps while working in TV, where almost everyone always looks good. My dermatologist was paid by my employer. I don’t think I was on it long and was probably on the lowest dosage possible - a lifetime ago now.
We do have a teenage daughter and thankfully she has my skin genes instead of her father’s. She has a couple of small pimples now and then, mostly on the nose. I read your suggestion to someone else about a low dose AHA and I might get her to try that AFTER she commits to wearing sunscreen. She is rather stubborn...teenager for you.

Retinol actually caused deep acne in my jaw line. I'm seeing a woman who finally told me that it's not for my skin type and my skin has been clearing up.

Thanks for this video. Every time I think I've read most of what there is to know about acne treatment, I hear/read more! Thanks for all the additional tips! When I did have acne years ago, I was prescribed Retin-A topical cream and tetracycline by mouth. It cleared up my skin in about three months and I was able to stop the treatment after a year, with no more acne. It's my understanding that tetracycline is no longer used because of antibiotic resistance. Is that true? Regards, Rita

😔 I've been taking Oratane for 2 months now.. No bad side effects at all but I get worried about the potential long term effects and deranged liver function effects. It's working pretty well so far but still wish my dermatologist was more open to other options and not just slapping a prescription in front of me and sending me on my way..

    Hi doc,
Can you also do a short video about exfoliating (if you haven't done it already? Like is it good to use chemical or physical. Or is it good to use scrub beads or like the one you show in this vid. And thank you for always giving us this helpful advice. 💖

Hi Doc, im addicted to your videos, very clear explanation. I used to suffer from hormonal acne ( i call it hormonal even i never visit a dermatologist for that). The thing is i have eczema which can be really hard to treat acne when it flares up. I stopped taking dairy product, having less processed food and trying to be vegan (still transitioning). My skin has clear up now. You are absolutely right about retinoid. Its really good to cure acne. I still use retinoid even my acne has clear up. And thinking about stepping the next level to retin a or retinol. Do you think i could use differin with my skin condition, Doc? ( i have mild eczema, very sensitive combination skin. Still using the low over the counter retinoid by the ordinary for over a year now)

I've been having skin problems from steroid withdrawal. My skin is _extremely_ dry, peels, and itchy. If I apply a moisturize that helps, I develop ance bumps on my jawline and corner of my mouth. I was put on antibiotics by my derm but taken off it (bc it was too harsh) to allow my skin to heal on it's own

Thankyou for this video. Love your videos. So much formation out there. Do you feel as we get older we shouldn't be cleansing with a cleanser everyday but occasionally just use water. I was told that. It seems so hard to do. I need some kind of glow. Could you recommend a good facial moisturizer., oil free , frangrance free, or do feel we shouldn't use moisturizer.. I read an article on that too. Thankyou, 58 and wanting to keep my skin as well as possible getting older. Have a nice weekend.

ive always been acne prone, at 28 most of it is gone except the big nasties that come out on my chin. Does that count as female adult acne? They always appear during pms but not every month. Some months i dont get any at all and sometimes i will get a big one on my chin and other times i get 5--6 overnight spread across my jaw. they are painful to touch and resist every medication. 1% retinol 2%, salycilic acid 2,5, 5 & even 10%.BPO . They just sit there for 2 weeks no matter what.

Hi Dr. Lim, I'm curious how sunscreen alters the effectiveness of sunlight on reducing your acne. I assume it makes the light less effective? Not that I would skip sunscreen for this, just wondering. Thanks!

Thank you, Dr. Lim! You’re the best! I look forward to your hormonal jawline female acne educational. I’m in the 40-50 range and just recently started to get breakouts, mostly on the jawline. I have been on Refissa for over a year simply for anti-aging benefits and it has done nothing for my new found acne friends on my face. I purchased Differin over the counter (I’m in the US, $15-$25) and am applying a pea size amount once a week. I am also applying spot treatment using Benzoyl Peroxide 10% as needed. Can I spot treat at night while using Refissa? I am trying a few things before seeing my dermatologist, diet etc. to see if I can get it under control. Lastly, I am using a 2% salicylic Acid the mornings after a breakout. I do use sunscreen religiously... love SkinCeuticals Physical Fusion!
My skin is typically normal to dry and more on the sensitive side for actives. I built up my skin tolerance to tretinoin over time but cannot use harsh products like glycolic acid in any capacity without it causing the veins in my face to surface.
    Thanks so much! Best wishes!

Benzoyl peroxide was the only thing that worked for my stubborn acne. When I discovered it after years of searching for an acne solution it was a godsend. Less than 5 dollars at target, walmart or kmart. Now I tell everyone with acne to use it. You do have to build up using it. At first you can only use it once a day. It does bleach the skin so you have to be careful if you have dark skin.
I use tea tree mixed with Aloe vera as a moisturizer. I love tea tree I have used it for over 10 years. Yes, sun does help kill acne. After laying in the sun I notice my skin clears up. Eating better also helped alot.

I had to use accutane as a last resort, because nothing was working. I’ve tried everything out there and chemical peels helped as far as scaring was concerned but my pimples weren’t going away. I’m now on my second to last month of it and the only issue I have with it is aching bones and dry skin. I’m just hoping it doesn’t come back. But accutane is a last last last resort for some of us.

Hey, Doctor, I've been struggling with acne since I was 18. I am 33 now. I went to several dermatologists. I've used bezoly peroxide, clyndamicine, retinoic acid, salycilic acid. Does It work? Yes. My skin gets clear, but after some months it comes back. My acne is mild to moderate (second grade). 3 dermatologists said to start on Accutane because, although my acne is not severe (level 3 or 4) It is persistent. But I'm afraid of. First because I will have to take blood exams every month, Second because I know a Lot of people who had some bad side effects (not strong, but kind annoying).
