You forgot something about Orbital Gate Assault: If the player starts a battle if choosing the stage while pressing the shield button (ZL or ZR, for example) *WITHOUT* Fox and Falco, a secret discussion featuring Team Star Fox will start. Interesting fact, Wolf, Leon, Panther, Beltino and Krystal don’t talk in those discussions, even though they help Fox, Falco, Slippy, Peppy and ROB64 at that moment. Actually, for some reason, there’s no Wolfen in the stage and none of them are mentioned.
The Wii balance board being animated as a little guy on the stage is not a Smash idea, that is directly from Wii Fit. I love all the detail you go into with each stage and describing the references and the mechanics, really driving deep.
Here's another tidbit about this stage. In Ultimate, you cannot summon Alucard as an assist trophy in the Wii Fit training room, since vampires do not have a reflection.
Fun little fact about Wuhu Island: The omega form in Smash 4 was basically the stage flying over the island but Smash Ultimate changed it to take place in the Swordplay coliseum.
One thing worth mentioning is that when Gamer was brought back in Smash Ultimate, the artwork of the WarioWare characters like the stickers on 9-Volt's desk and the sketchbook got updated to use their WarioWare Gold artwork. And speaking of WarioWare Gold, Gamer comes back in that game as Sneaky Gamer and the Virtual Boy that was by the TV is replaced with a Wii U
19:25 For what it's worth, Haxorus came pretty close to being a pseudo-legendary, with the only criteria not being met being that the base stat total is too low. Weird that Goodra is missing too.
Another note on the PAC-LAND stage, the original game featured secrets by pushing certain objects. The stage will randomly choose objects and if you push them, you’ll gain their effects, growing like a super mushroom and getting a Lucky Pac to become invincible
And it even talks! I remember freaking out any time it would check my weight, because when you step on the actual board it makes this little "oh" of surprise, and I always assumed that meant I had gotten fat.
Fun fact about the Super Mario Maker stage (my favorite stage in Smash): Some layouts featured slopes in the terrain, a feature that, while highly requested, was surprisingly *never* added in the original Super Mario Maker and took all the way until Super Mario Maker 2 for it to finally be in an actual Mario Maker game.
I'll never forget the time i was playing Sm4sh and saw on of the Miiverse drawings for Cloud being from that one animation where he has this funny face yelling "We'll show him!!" and i wheezed.
(1:00) Also worth noting that Smash for Wii U also introduced 6 player Smash mode. 1-4 players had all stages available. 5-6 had some stages unavailable. 7-8 had even more stages unavailable.
35:43 Ms. PAC-MAN’s design is in the US version of PAC-LAND is actually based on her appearance in the PAC-MAN animated series by Hanna-Barbara which also served as the basis for the game itself. Sorry for the late info.
An interesting bit of unused data involving Midgar is that if you have two sound files for one song play on that stage, the stage will decide which sound file in that song will play for the match. This suggests that at one point in development, there probably wasn't going to be a Song Selection feature on that stage like there was for other stages, where you can choose how often a song plays. Sm4sh Midgar did have 2 songs after all
4:1:27 It's ee-freet (efreet is actually another spelling of the mythological creatures Ifrit is based on), ra-mu (he's named after either Lahmu, Raama and Vishnu or King Ra Mu of the lost city of Mu) and ba-ha-moot (who in the original myth was actually a whale, look it up).
You know, one detail I'm surprised you haven't mentioned regarding Woolly World and The Great Cave Offensive is that we were originally going to get a stage based on Kirby's Epic Yarn, but that was scrapped when Yoshi's Woolly World got announced. I still find it strange that they didn't opt for a stage based on Kirby's Return To Dream Land or something, but I'm not one to demonize Mr. Sakurai regardless of how bad The Great Cave Offensive is as a Smash Bros. stage.
Ah, Great Cave Offensive, the worst stage for what it represents for Kirby, ghosting the modern series completely Should have been a Return to Dream Land stage man
I never owned a Wii U and in fact I only played one once. It was a Friday night, I walked back into my barracks where there was a bit of a crowd around the CQ desk. The guy on duty had brought his Wii U down from his room along with a small monitor and of course it was Smash 4 that was on. Eventually I got my chance to play and despite spending a lot of time on Brawl back on the Wii, I got my ass kicked because I was in awe just staring at the background of the stages we played (in addition to not being able to get used to the right stick being *above* the face buttons, damn the Wii U pro controller sucked). Orbital Gate Assault, Jungle Hijinx, and Skyloft were awesome to look at.
It's the fact that there were so many high-effort, high quality art shows that were displayed that took a day or few to make on Miiverse and then they get forgotten after the next installment. Could've easily brought it back with a download-and-paste feature.
Bro I had NO clue there were this many new stages packed in two games that are basically the same game. Smash 4 Wii U was not only my first Smash game but also the first game I got on my Wii U on Christmas. I can’t believe this was the biggest when it came to number of new stages and new non-DLC characters.
32:03 A volcano visible from anywhere and the highest point, sounds a lot like Death Mountain in Hyrule and Woodfall in Termina (I guess Termina is upside down from Hyrule lol, though I think Snowfall is higher up than both Woodfall AND Death Moutain, which doesn't line up with Hyrule at all).
If I remember correctly a fun fact thing in smash says that if whalemer shows up, then the strong current appears but if he doesn’t, nothing really happens.
i think the wrecking crew floors are not infinite, there is just a lot of them, so you can run out if you turn timer off and break them without attacking each other
Woolly World was one of my favorite stages on Wii U and I was anticipating that it would return in Ultimate with new, updated graphics - extremely disappointed that it didn't return. I seriously hope that modders would be able to port it and retexture it into Ultimate.
Or maybe there will be some kind of DLC expansion to Ultimate that adds every other past stage along with some new stages, as well other new content like new modes.
2:16 The beanstalk was actually initially based on Sparkling Waters - A: Skyward Stalk in the main Mario Bros U game as the hidden level you can go to from the secret exit in world 1
Great Cave Offensive should have been a Return to Dream Land stage if they couldn't do an Epic Yarn stage. It just makes it even more obvious Sakurai is biased towards his Kirby games even thought he tried denouncing it by saying "It's based on the Super Star Ultra version".
The ShyGuys become actual playable characters in Mario Kart 8 without playing the game online. So them showing up as the racers in the Mario Circuit stage for Smash 4 is a reference to that.
One additional note about Gamer: Sometimes an old man walks by the window and pretends to be the mother. He also opens the window but his disguise becomes obvious by then.
Some things worth noting with the Palutena's Temple stage is that, while parts of it like the Waterfall and the upper right platforms are unique to the level, there are two sections that directly reference the 20th chapter of Uprising. Firstly, the underground areas at the bottom left are nods to the Strongarm Centurion encounter where there were two lines of statues in the room (which you can faintly see in one of the doorways), and the dungeon section of the same chapter just below that room (albeit said dungeon maze was a different building in the chapter). Secondly, the rising platform in front of the Palutena Statue is a nod to the arena where you fought Palutena and the Chaos Kin, starting in front of the temple before the platform began rising into the sky. The rest of the level, however, is totally original, with parts like the upper right area being more in line with the Skyworld Stage from Brawl.
28:01 The Wii Fit Balance Board was given a personality in the Wii Fit games. I know for sure that it was in Wii Fit U, but I don’t know about prior games.
I loved so many of these stages but Wuhu Island and Miiverse were some of my absolute favourites, some of the stuff you'd see on Miiverse were just so weird it's great
The Great Cave Offensive looks amazing and makes me want a Return to Dreamland styled 3D 2D remake of Super Star Ultra. But that will probably never happen, here’s hoping though.
I honestly want to see Pyrosphere return sometime. Now that stage hazards are able to be turned off now... Maybe this stage would make a good competitive stage?
35:50 Actually, the designs of Ms. Pac-Man and Pac-Baby (as well as Pac-Man himself) in the international version are based on their designs from the Pac-Man cartoon, which is actually what Pac-Land is based on. The international version also featured Pac-Man's dog and cat, Chomp-Chomp and Sour Puss, running around, who are completely absent in the Japanese version as well as in Smash. One last difference to these characters' appearances is that in the Arcade Archives and Pac-Man Museum+ releases of Pac-Land, Ms. Pac-Man and Pac-Baby are replaced with Pac-Mom and Pac-Sis, due to copyright issues. I don't know how they managed to get away with Ms. Pac's cameo in Smash, but whatever.
35:37 actually the "international" version of Ms. Pac-Man was based on the old 80s Pac-Man cartoon by Hanna Barbara. Kinda like how "Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine" used the old 1993 Sonic cartoon character designs.
Honestly I think I picked the Miiverse stage most times cause I wanted to laugh at the dumb things people would post/ draw there. Gave me a good chuckle

@JoeyKazooie Him being summonable but not having a reflection would have been far better.
He was even on the reveal trailer for Wii Fit Trainer
The Miiverse stage will always hold a place in my heart. Really miss it and Miiverse as a whole in a messed up sort of way.

Especially the yellow characters, they look better on Wii U

Pretty sure the Wii Fit Balance Board was an animated character in the actual game and it isn't just a Smash addition.
The Loftwings look like they were inspired by real life shoebills. Look them up. They’re pretty scary birds.
A lot can happen in three years like Miiverse going from the best stage in Smash 4 to just being another Battlefield clone.
