I met an other Ovni skipper who had used black and white anti fouling to paint the hull so that it looked like an Orca. He didn’t know if it would have prevented an interaction as they didn’t meet any Orca on their passage through the Straits, but it was an interesting idea.
Actually the OVNI is a centreboard with twin rudders designed to beach it or fall dry. The rudders are pretty robust , have sailed an OVNI NW passage with drifting ice and polar bears. But yet you nevertheless when the mast becomes the toothpick then it gets scary
That's hard to say, Orca has always been aggressive and roams the seas there more then 200 miles of the coast. But for what we have heard there are 2 pods which are actively seeking a nibbling at sailing boats. We are the intruder into their feeding grounds.
they are whales - let the japanese whalers in to kill a 1,000 year and do much needed scientific research - so we can learn more about these magnificent creatures
Aluminium hull and rudders much better than crappy fibreglass.
Ovni boats will become the one to have in Gibraltar!

You all sound very calm for someone who is having their rudders nibbled away...
The rudders of an OVNI are made of solid alloy
@@PaulusPHM - that just makes them more expensive to replace after a 5 tonne dolphin uses it as a toothpick 😂

If my life depended on it, as much as I love whales, it's harpoon time!
I am so with you! I'd go astern and force them to deal with the spinning prop, and harpoon away...they need to be taught or it will spread
Beautiful animals.
Who needs a rudder anyway? 😁
Rudders are made from alluminio alloys
try telling that to the people who have lost there yachts the past few months, they are now a clear danger to lives now
We were wondering what would happen if they tried to chew on Gizmo!! The local fishermen say to throw sand in the water
You sailing an alloy yacht..
That is too metallic for their teeth.
@@PaulusPHM I wonder if chewing on aluminum hurt their fillings? 😅
@@sailinggizmo They know that too much aluminum can cause Alzheimer's.
What an experience 😍❤
Right you are
Were the rudders very much damaged?
No damage other then scratches on the paint
@Sailing Channel Marinus what bottom paint did the boat have?
how well did the two stear then ?
Broken Orca teeth in the rudder further no damage...
@@PaulusPHM straight and zigzagging?
Nothing special, just keep going the course and playing blue whale 🐋 sounds
Do you know anything about the outcome of this Orca occasion?
Orca's left with no damage caused
Great! Would you recommend to head more to the west to avoid these (not necessarily unpleasant) interactions?

Taste like a soda can.
spray/jet water on the sea surface at the Orcs...anyone try that yet?
Know that some tried , that is increasing the interaction.
This is no rabble of mindless orcs. These are uruk hai...
Its not being attacked, Orca's just playing around and are curious. Typical Orca behaviour
How would you know, were you on board.

Misplaced humor
@@PaulusPHM this whales prob trained by putin himself to start ww3.. we should send nato to bomb all orcas to death..
