I made my own clutch alignment tool

  • Making a clutch alignment tool seems silly. And it is. Just buy one!
    Unfortunately, I couldn't find one locally, and didn't want to wait for one to arrive via post.

    Bet you wouldn't have been so happy to see the snow if you had to change the clutch outside! Have a great Christmas and New Year with your family, and thanks once again for all the videos you've made this year. Andrew

      Many years ago I did that very thing on my Mk2 Jaguar(pronounced Jag-you-are for you colonials :>) ), its no fun when ice forms on your overalls, but then I was only in my teens at the time and you do silly things when you are young, like buy Jaguars with suspect clutchs!

    I think you should have put a viewer take warning "snow about to be shown, jump to 3:48 to protect your eyes" for your viewers in Alaska and Greenland. We see way too much snow and are offended by people that like snow! hehe Good solution to the pilot. You can always forge style heat up the key and pound it to a larger dimension after heating it with a oxy-acy torch. Holiday cheer from here, Matt.

      Thanks! The snow stopped, and since the ground is still warm, it all melted. There's a chance this weekend. Are you North of L.A.? (I'm getting so many regular commenters, I'm starting to forget who is who) How's the fires out there? Are they anywhere near you? Our local news simply calls them the L.A. fires, so I really have no idea where they are.

      Wide Vision Metal Fab Yeah, I'm the avocado /lemon farmer about 1hr north of LA. Fire is about 10 miles away down wind (1 freeway over) so farm & house are OK. Thanks for asking (know at least 6 people who lost homes).

      Usually you don't even need to align one spline. The alignment tool only centers the clutch to the pilot bearing.
      Then he could have machined that shaft to fit snug in pilot and it already fit snug in clutch. Done deal.

    • @WideVisionMetalFab
      @WideVisionMetalFab  6 лет назад

      It's a twin disc clutch. The splines on BOTH discs need to be aligned to each other.

      I have to build myself a shop and I would rather have something like yours than chuckie 2009s building.
      So I'm getting ideas from fabrication guys and mechanics shows.

      @@freewillfarms2059 Because of how YTube now structures comment replies, I just realized this a comment on an old video. I'm no longer in the shop in this video. I'm in a little 14x28 foot garage now. The shop in this video was a 30x60, with an "office" addition on the side. It was a good size. And it was made from "blue rock" blocks. Very energy efficient! I'm not even sure if they're available now, I assume concrete has replaced them. And since you might be building yours, one thing I've learned is maximize your Southern exposure, and Minimize your Western exposure to make the most of the Sun. The West side of a building is brutally hot in the Summer! And another bit of advice, always build bigger than you think you'll need! :) If you ever have any questions, send me an e-mail, as I don't see every comment. It's under the "about" of my channel.

    I remember my brother putting a trans in an old ford capri, he didn't have a clutch tool, so he took the bellhousing off the trans, and used the trans for the alignment tool. It was light enough to just hold up while someone else tightened the bolts, I guess that's not an option with a 10 speed.

    • @WideVisionMetalFab
      @WideVisionMetalFab  6 лет назад

      Interesting idea! I'd have to look closer at the 10 speed, I honestly can't remember if the bell housing comes off.

    There are times when "easily available" is relative. So you had to make it. So the truck runs! Speaking of snow we have all of a centimeter of snow do the ground. I am annoyed. I can't ski on one lousy centimeter!

    • @WideVisionMetalFab
      @WideVisionMetalFab  6 лет назад

      We had about an Inch. Unfortunately, the ground was still warm enough to melt it. Maybe you'll get to ski soon! Happy New Year Juan!

  • @TheFurriestOne

    • @WideVisionMetalFab
      @WideVisionMetalFab  6 лет назад +1

      Yep, the throw out bearing fell off the pressure plate. All the balls fell out! Nope, I don't use the clutch when shifting. I'm working on the edit for the video about what exactly failed and more details of putting the clutch in.

    By livingso far from suppliers, you need to develops lots of skills in order to get things done, you can keep the tool, but hopefuly the clutch will outlast you, unless you live to be a hundred like your Grand'pa...
    Well doe with minimal tooling... ;)

    Probably quicker to make your own tool than take a round trip to town, even if they had one. With those funny clutch plates with only three pads, rather than a complete ring, does it matter that they are not in line? Intuitively I would have had them so they put equal pressure on either side the centre disc.

    • @WideVisionMetalFab
      @WideVisionMetalFab  6 лет назад +1

      The round trip to town would have definitely been longer than the time it took to make the tool. I figured they need to be in-line, too, but the splines weren't clocked correctly to do such. So I just put them on. I guess it doesn't matter.

    • @chrisstephens6673
      @chrisstephens6673 6 лет назад +1

      On my crummy lap top screen it looks like there are 10 splines, so there may have been a position where they aligned. But I'm sure it will work just fine, hopefully.:>)

    • @speedandmarine9066
      @speedandmarine9066 6 лет назад +1

      It doesn't really matter as each piece is balanced usually. On the 3 puk clutches I normally clock the puks so they're in between each other from one disk to the other. Doesn't matter, just makes me feel good. I do like those 3 puks for the pedal feel, they are really smooth!
      Nice job on the alignment tool, nice to see there are still people around who can just get stuff done.

    • @patw52pb1
      @patw52pb1 6 лет назад +2

      The Eaton manual says the disk buttons are to be oriented in a longitudinal stacked alignment.
      Eaton and Midwest both indicate if the buttons are not in stacked alignment the clutch performance is reduced, chatter/shudder is likely, the disks and intermediate/floater plate will likely prematurely wear/warp/fail.
      The 3 button disks usually will only line-up the splines and buttons in 1 clocked position on the splines.
      Most 3 button disks usually have an alignment/orientation paint/ink mark ( or bright yellow spring) visible on the pressure plate side.

      patw52pb1, I have no experience of this type of clutch but that is what I had supposed to be the case. Good to know my logic hasn't faded entirely, yet! Hope we haven't given a certain lorry owner any sleepless nights.:>(

    I watch a couple of other channels similar to yours and notice they use a whitish fluid on third lathe. You use an oil. What’s the difference??? I have no experience on lathe’s.

    • @jusb1066
      @jusb1066 6 лет назад

      the white fluid is a coolant, an oil that mixes with water (so it cheaper), its meant to be pumped on and have a reservoir of gallon or 2 , this is the best as theres always plenty and the excess cools as well, but you have to buy pumps, and stuff. brushing oil , so long as you keep doing it as you go is simple at least, but doesnt cool quite as well , so you cant work quite as fast, probably
