The "no electronics" policy is an a-hole management policy. Phones are sometimes a genuine life line and no management has the right to take away your lifeline -- unless they have a substitute life line for employees.

Not completely, sometimes its for compliance and security reasons, if someone is working in an area were they don't want data leaks during manufacturing or other high security areas its common practice. Also common practice for places that might deal with PII and Healthcare information (Captel which does a teletype to relay service for deaf people has this requirement - well from what i know of 10 years ago when a friend worked there)
However i would say the fact that he got yelled at for it, even with it in his locker during an emergency was a bit overboard, although not the first company i know of that was strict like that (Moms workplace, you could get in trouble if someone called the office asking for them during work hours as basically no personal calls what so ever- even if it was family emergencies, and heck a few debt collectors)
I do think the guy could have handled it better but then a high stress work place does make you a bit short tempered when things effect your job.

I worked for a company that had a no phone policy (save for management/supervisors) because some devices within some companies use Bluetooth for communication and as they say it, the Bluetooth on your devices can cause issues with those signals. Stuff like smart watches were also not allowed. In addition like another person said it can be for security reasons to not allow sensitive or confidential information from leaking out. One person recorded the manufacturing and streamed it or took a picture and not only gave away the process used but also leaked sensitive numbers on the products. In that case the person was fired instead of simply written up.
Additional using these devices is dangerous in some places as the distraction can either cause damage to the product or more importantly a person. In addition of course it slows down production if your too busy with your phone to actually work which more often is the case than it really should be.
Now if you think I am exaggerating, consider being in an area with lots of machines and fast moving forklifts and carts along with lifts and tracks that move rather fast. You don't pay attention and ensure you are being safe bad things can happen. I was there when a person died because of not following policies put in place for safety and have seen and heard of people being hurt because someone was messing around with a phone (which they shouldn't have had on them in the first place) and of course things running slower because a person thought their phone was more important than doing their job. This causes things to be slowed down so not as much production to be finished which in turn means having to work extra hours to make up lost time and eventually hurt bonuses due to less production.
In my case there is a contact line for people to call in case of emergencies to reach loved ones. There is likely the same thing for where this guy worked since phones where not allowed.

To add to the list of jobs where the no phone policy is enforced and for good reason - I've worked as a casino dealer. To make absolutely sure there's no chance of colluding with a player, as well as other types of cheating, dealers cannot have a phone, nor can they have a smartwatch on their person while on the floor, they must be stowed in our lockers - the only time we're allowed to access our phones is during our breaks in the breakroom.

My uncle, being a businessman, used to work in the World Trade Center from time to time circa 2001. You have no idea how scared we were on 9/11 when we heard that the planes had hit the Twin Towers, because we didn’t know if he was there that day, and we couldn’t reach him on his phone.
Fortunately, he wasn’t there, but those few hours were incredibly harrowing for us, as it was for many other people with friends and family who worked in the towers.
OP’s wife, fearing that her husband was hurt or even killed, was well within her rights to reach her husband any way she could. OP is YTA for blowing up at her like that, instead of taking the time to reassure her that he was okay.
Frankly, if he’s more worried about a pay raise instead of reassuring his wife, then I wouldn’t be surprised if OP’s wife decided to just pack up her and their kids’ things and leave OP with signed divorce papers on the kitchen table.

Fun fact: Michelin began publishing its “Red Guide” in 1900, when both cars and food tourism were novel luxuries. Its creators hoped that a guidebook offering information about hotels, restaurants, and roadways would lead people to drive more-and buy more Michelin tires.

Okay this happened to me in 1995. I was barely twenty-two years old and had just started working as a dishwasher in this Mexican restaurant. I had been working there about a month and all the staff agreed that I was a badass. Even the owner Louis believe that I was best dishwasher he ever seen. Later on I worked for him at another Steakhouse where he taught me how to cook and I became his chef. But anyway we had this manager Miguel, no matter how hard I worked, no matter how much I impressed everyone else, he did not like me. He never liked me. He brought his cousin Fernando in to dishwash two days a week, Fernando was illegal. Then one day out of the blue I make a minor mistake for the first time. I slipped on some grease in the kitchen dropped a plate and it broke. One plate. I even opened up my wallet and offered to pay Miguel on the spot for the plate. He told me no, he said he wasn't going to fire me, but he was going to cut me down to only working 6 hours a day on Sunday, cut me down from 44 hours a week to 6 hours a week and he was going to give all of my hours to his illegal cousin Fernando who didn't even have work visa. So long story short, I took off my apron, threw it at him, and told him that he can just give all my hours to Fernando because I quit. But here's where the ironic Justice comes in. That Mexican restaurant started going under, meanwhile a few days after quitting I had run into the owner Louis. He offered me a job to come work on his other place, a huge popular steakhouse that served a large crowd. And he had me working as a waiter rather than a dishwasher. I was making good money plus tips full-time plus overtime almost every week. The Mexican restaurant however started going under, eventually Luis sold it to Miguel. And then a year later it completely went out of business. The steakhouse became more popular than ever, and on the weekend I had gotten a part time job 10 hours a day for 2 days a week cooking at another Steakhouse as well. I started making fat bank with a full wallet while the last time I heard Fernando had been deported Miguel was in trouble with the IRS and a whole bunch of other people over hiring him and the last I heard he was still in federal prison.
Side note ripe, you have full permission to use this story. This happened almost 30 years ago in Northern California.

OP is TA for not complaining about the disciplinary action taken against him when #1 it was a first time offense, #2 there was a valid reason for why it happened, and #3 they blamed him for someone else's actions despite his attempts to follow company policy. Did the panic calling thing while the hubby was in the military. Days of landlines, I was back home visiting family. Hubby calls telling my mom that there were problems with the tires and needed to know where to take the car. She told him I'd call him back when I got home and I called back when I got back in. No answer. Several times later...no answer. Called friends, he'd told several friends that there were problems with the tires and he was going to take the car in, but no one saw or heard from him after that. Finally resorted to calling his job, nope, no one saw him, he'd complained about the tires at work but after that, nadda. So, next day he calls back, laughing and apologizing. He found the paperwork for the tires, the big emergency was "created" by low air in the tires and so he didn't bother calling back. He then went to a bachelor party and didn't get home until early in the morning so no one caught him. But he was roundly bitched out by everyone for scaring me...and them. The tires thing, not the strip club thing. He promised to never do that again and he kept to it. Friends joked that I cut my visit short just so I could go home and bitch him out and, well, they weren't wrong. Non communication can be worse than the situation that caused it.
And before anyone says it, no the tire thing wasn't that big of a thing, it was him complaining about it then disappearing, the friends he went to the bachelor party with weren't our normal friend group, so no one knew it was going on. Since he normally didn't disappear like that, yeah, everyone was concerned.

I know plenty of people who worked as waiters through college and love their job so much that they stayed in the profession for a few years even after graduating while they took their time to find something in their field of study. But of course if you treat your staff horribly it's no wonder that they all leave as soon as they are able to. This Karen is creating a self-fulfilling prophecy... Check your phones settings though, on android you can turn it off, make it so only some people can use the feature, or have it automatically forward to another number instead(like say the store phone so they can leave a message).

Story 4 - NTA. Seriously. I'm a girl, and I don't panic like this. I don't panic like this because I'm lucky enough to have a father that reinforced that I should set my emotions aside and think with my head in stress situations. If there's a fire at your husband's workplace where he is not allowed to have his phone on him, and will be disciplined for the disruption, there's no point in calling him. He doesn't have his phone, he isn't going to answer. If he's hurt at the secondary site (where his locker is not), he's going to be in an ambulance, still won't have his phone and he isn't going to answer. If he's dead, he DEFINITELY isn't going to answer even if he does have his phone. All this was ever going to accomplish was cause a cell phone to go ballistic in a locker. I feel very strongly that women and girls should be taught not to do stupid shit when their emotions run high, not have their faulty reasoning validated for doing it. I'm not saying men are perfect, but damn so many stupid, destructive things wouldn't happen if people used their heads.

This AITA story reminded me of a story from way back.
So, back in the 80s my dad did research with explosives in a chemical lab. My mom knew exactly two things about this job: 1. Dad is researching the kinds of explosives where grams are enough to destroy entire arms, and 2. This lab had enough nastiness there that if there was a fire, the local fire trucks would pull out of the station and drive in the opposite direction.
So one day, Mom is at work and she gets a call from Dad's boss. And he says "(Mom's first name), there was a fire at the lab. We're gonna need you to stay calm and go to the hospital." Cue Mom, like the good military wife, trying her damnedest not to freak out while driving the hour to the hospital, trying to think if she remembers what Dad's teeth look like, or what will be left to remember. Good news is it was a small-town hospital, so the minute she walks in, she hears "Hi, honey!" She turns and sees her dear, darling husband grinning like an idiot and waving the hand a nurse isn't bandaging up.
It turns out, when they said "there was a fire", they meant "your husband was demonstrating rocket fuels for the local boy scout troop, and accidentally turned a surgical glove filled with hydrogen into a blowtorch pointed at his hand", when they said "stay calm" they meant "everything is fine, it's all in control now," not "we need you calm," and when they said "go to the hospital," it was less a "we need you to tell us which of these blackened lumps we pulled from the ashes looks most like your husband," and more a "someone else drove him to the hospital and he should get discharged soon. Have fun!"
In much the same way, I feel OP's employers were the A-holes. They should have a whole list of emergency contacts. Before that story hit the news, someone should have set 5 different people to check who was on site at the secondary facility, and work through that whole emergency contact list going either "There was a fire, it was at the secondary facility, your loved one was on site there, we will contact you when we know more," or "There was a fire, it was at the second facility, your loved one was not scheduled to work there today." Now, if you don't do that, you don't then get to be annoyed at employees for worried loved ones blowing up their phones when they see a big fire with casualties in the news and hear nothing from you.
As for the OP of this AITA, yeah, kinda. My dude, look past the frustration of your immediate concerns thanks to a boss chewing you out wrongly, and look to the feelings of your wife who didn't know if you were dead or alive. And the first thing you greet her with is not a reassuring word, but a relay of that chewing out? Man, don't let the company take your heart and soul. Sucks about that promotion, but your wife ain't the one who took it away. If your boss didn't get those calls out to reassure family, if they didn't understand extenuating circumstances... I'm trying to be accommodating and think what job would have good reason behind all of this, and I'm sorry, I can't think of one. I don't know any job where not only "no electronics" due to information security, but also "no telling loved ones anything" because information about your death is a mission critical secret. Trouble is, I can't. So you're the A-hole for letting your A-hole bosses affect your relationship at home.

Most likely, it's some kind of government contracting job. And they didn't contact loved ones not out of information security, but because they just don't care.
The alternative is that the company is doing some seriously illegal shit, and was too busy sweeping that under the rug to reach out.

    Joe story.
First let me tell you I am a Yankee. I was born in California (CA) and grew up in Wisconsin (WI). So am a Yankee born and bred. Well my situation brought me to a Southern state and being a true Yankee I could care less what someone looks like. I will always treat you with respect--at least until I see/hear of one of my friends/employees have been or will be discriminated against for any reason.
A few years ago I moved from the city to a small town in another state. Unfortunately I was met by the Sheriff of the small town area and told that since I was white I was not allowed to live on the street that my company had paid a 3-year lease for my house while I was working here and that not one black person would be allowed to work in my office since I was a white person's business.
I did two things IMMEDATELY after this jerk left my step. 1) I called my boss and told her to stop the transfers of my black colleagues. When I explained what I had been told he hit the roof--he's also black. 2) Got in my car and went to the closest large city and asked the first black person where the State Police Troop was located. She was kind enough to allow me to follow her as I told her I had just moved to this state and she said -- "we all know our place and we are busting out of that as fast as we can get out." I gave my business card and told her to contact me if she wanted/needed any help.
Went unto the Troop and asked to speak to the Captain as I want to discuss what had happened to me and how I felt threatened and how my crew had already been threatened of harm because they are mostly black.
Although the Captain does not normally take reports he stepped out and invited me and a female Trooper into his office. After explaining what had happened and that I was in fear for my colleagues lives he found an empty building in his area for me to be able to transfer my offices to. Helped me find a home that was owned by the same landlord who eagerly allowed me to swap my 3-year lease and called my boss to give him a complete update.
My 3 years were up in March 2024 and the Captain gave me plenty of contact in case I have a simular problem. NOTE: The Captain's son is a Lieutenant for State Police in the area I will be setting up. Life is WONDERFUL and I will always be happy to have had the privilege of knowing and becoming friends of the Captain's family--3 of his daughter's are now in college and my company has paid their entire cost for all four years each.
NOTE: That Sheriff was relieved of duty without retirement pay AND never being allowed to pin the badge anywhere (department) again.

I’ve never understood how you can be a general without knowing what is too much to ask from a private. You can’t trust the person who has self interest in that position to have the same self interest as the owner- you must meet them and find out which flavor of “just pay my rent and let me do the job I chose” is best for the organization.

from the sounds of it, he did have it on silent (do not disturb) which he said due to the amount of calls it turned itself off. Probably been better to put in airplane mode, although it wouldnt let you know if you missed any calls or texts, but being in a locker would probably save battery and device life as its not trying to receive/send signals through metal.
There are some cases and locations that personal phones due pose a security risk and i can see that being a good reason to ban them. But the employer should have some considerations during emergencies if a family member is trying to reach them that its not the employees fault

And everyone calling OP TAH are just wrong. This is a NAH story. She was worried and wanted to make sure he was fine. He got angry because her actions caused him to written up. Really though a phone going off in a locker is not a valid reason for a write up and OP does need to reach out to HR and then inform them that he wants this write up removed. If that doesn't happen then he needs to reach out to a lawyer.

The husband was an ahole though for that. Like one of the comments said, she was panicking. Even if he doesn't work at that site often, he still does, and she worried that it could have maybe been a chance he was working there when it happened. In a panic, she called her husband directly because again, would someone in the absolute midst of a panic consider the secondary option right away? So what if it cost him a promotion, a life is far more important than money. And i can't lie, the company higher ups are aholes too. A write up for a phone going off is ridiculous.

Yes, he sucks because he didn't consider her feelings. However, she also sucks for the exact same reason. That guy with the broken computer shot himself in the foot because of his intense bigotry. He didn't get his computer fixed and was arrested because of his actions. Yep, shot himself in the foot big time.
As to is that guy the a-hole in the last story, what type of bysiness prevents no electronics of any kind on the person during work? Was the work classified? Was it sensitive to electronic interference? That company is the a-hole for their no electronic policy. Also, if they knew about the fire, and employees sometimes work at that location, they should have told their employees to call home, on their dime, to let family members know they were alright. That the guy was written up because his wife was wooried about him is plain stupid. That he didn't put his cell phone on silent is another question. But here's a better question. What happens if there's an emergency that knocks out the company phone system? And, the employees can't reach their lockers? And management isn't aware of the emergence because no one can contact management? How many lawsuits would that company then have to settle because of their no electronics on a person policy?
