    This was the same item that was my first elder dragon kill... i was getting eaten (half down the throat) and it was flying full speed after my allies who were trying to get away on a flying canoe made of force (long Long story), so i figured i could avoid getting into the stomach acid if i stopped myself in the throat with the rod, maybe block his fire breath if i was lucky (was going to just wedge it like a 10ft pole, in fact thats what my dm at the time Thought i was using...) so i went and made a roll to get it horizontal in the throat, then i said “okay, now that it is in place i climb onto the top and press the button” to which i hear this muffled squeak of “button??!?” From the DM... as i proceed to guillotine the poor dragon in two from the throat to the @$$ and outward haha, we had dragon ribs later, my character refrained as he had just become vegetarian...

      @ConnorSinclairCavin 4 года назад +25

      Victry Starz so effectively we had someone trying to be a force specialist caster and whom kept trying to find ways to make his spells become corporeal manifestations rather than merely temporary evocations, in addition he had some of the Old wild magic type random spells on fails things going on due to pissing off a few hags, demons, and other asundry collections of folks (everyone really) , so he kept getting random shapes made of force, some with some odd properties like reverse gravity or perpetual motion and stuff, individually they were useless for the most part, but my big mouth just had to say “hey, too bad they arent all lashed together right?” Well after a bad incident with raft physics in the air he made a spell to shape force that already existed (well more customized an existing spell to bypass force walls) and used it to take the various force planks/boards and with help from our carpenter gnome fitted the edges together and made a canoe that as long as he wasnt holding it back rocketed up to 50 ft and forward about 100 ft/turn. It also had lights, a funny spark trail, the ability to track scents, and a penchant to foretell omens in the voice of a rapping Barry Manalow.

    Got the essentials kit and starter kit for Christmas and tried to run my first game with one player using the noble fighter pregen and me controlling the cleric pregen while being the DM. We used the adventure in the essentials kit and the player immediately picked a quest I thought would be an easy and peaceful quest. Turns out it was a surprise Manticore attack quest and my player refused to negotiate. With the power of generous manticore choices and low intelligence, the player managed to end the battle with 1 hp an unconscious ally and a 150gp debt with the healing potion lady. It also helps the new dm figure things out a bit, so that when they get a proper party together that everybody doesn't leave due to having a shitty unexperienced dm that has never dm'd before. All the more so when nether players nor dm have ever played the game before lmao. Ether way there's no point hating on a newbie for not having enough people. I started a game with two players myself and ended up with 11 over the course of running the same campaign nearly a year and a half now. I myself was shit in the start and had 3 different people quit in the first 2 sessions, wasn't until the third session (with only one person from the first two left) that the game got going. 5000lbs is 22kN which is neat because climbing gear is usually rated to that sort of strength. So the rod would hold a person's weight but would move under the force of a large vehicle or massive weight. It would also punch through soft tissue at speed but be moved by harder materials like stone or metal.

    I was super curious about this, but I suck at physics, so here's my super dumbed-down analysis:
    Depending on the type of airship (i.e. if it's being lifted via magical means or something like helium), the weight of the ship itself would be anywhere from around 250 to 1000 tons (400,000 to 2 MILLION pounds). In order to achieve vertical lift, the vessel requires thrust in equal poundage to the vessel's weight just to get off the ground, not even accounting for the thrust required to accelerate and rise. Even if the airship weighted a measly 4 tons (about the weight of a Hippopotamus), it would still require 8,000 pounds of thrust just to get off the ground, which is the maximum amount of weight the Immovable Rod can sustain.
    At this point, one of two things would happen: either the Rod would immediately deactivate upon reaching its threshold weight (mind you, after solidly splitting the man in two), or, depending on the material of the hull, would break through the hull itself and remain in a fixed position in mid air. From there, it's a matter of how much PSI the hull could withstand before breaking. If it's over 8,000 psi, then I guess the hull remains unpunctured.

    And this, friends, is why we rule that immovable rods still obey the inertia of the building or vessel the rod is within, so a rod that is activated on a ship or other moving object still moves with the ship or moving object.
    Hahaha.

    • @toberle9468
      @toberle9468 4 года назад +2

      it doesn’t. that’s the entire point of it. you can use it to stop ships

    • @AuntieHauntieGames
      @AuntieHauntieGames 4 года назад +4

      @@toberle9468 Not actually the case.
      Medieval ships encountered in fantasy settings are almost always based on the galleon or the carrack. Galleons weigh around 500 tons on average, carracks weigh around 1000 tons on average.
      Meanwhile, the Immovable Rod reaches its limit when it stops more than 8000 pounds, or just around 4 tons. The moment the rod comes up against the ship, it is holding back the full weight of the ship, which means it is going to deactivate, according to the published rules for the item. Keeping in mind it turns off immediately according to the rules, it does not strain against the source of the weight once it exceeds its maximum, so there should be no busting holes in ships either.
      So, you can either say the item does NOT match the inertia of the ship, in which case it turns off the moment the ship starts moving and the rod collides with any part of the ship, making it basically useless on a moving vessel...
      ...or you can say it DOES match the inertia of the ship, in which case it can still be used to hold doors closed or keep people trapped in bed without having to worry about the ship suddenly colliding with the rod.
      : )
      DM's can overrule all that of course, for however much fun and profit you like. But by a strict reading of the rules, it should never stop a ship.

    • @nickduerr6400
      @nickduerr6400 4 года назад +3

      @@AuntieHauntieGames I mean if you consider the laws of physics and how force is applied while it's doubtful it would stop the ship the ship it wouldn't deactivate ether. As while theoretically could possibly stop a ship from moving in the first place depending on how the ship is powered and in paticulay how fast it's "take off's" acceleration is it could
      just rip a hole in the hull of the ship lmao. As take in mind the entirety of the ship's weight isn't coming to bear, only the portion that it makes contact with. Not to mention that lb's of force are not the same as the weight of the craft as a whole and the fact that the smaller the surface area of an object the less it's affected by the force of another object and the more it's force effect's the the other object. (This is something I learned the hard way in martial arts lmao.) So the most likely thing to happen, assuming the hull of the ship isn't made out of adamantium or some similarly hard material to break but made out of simple wood, steel, or some other material that has low structural integrity when concentrated force is applied then most likely the rod would just break the hull as the ship moved, staying firmly in the space it was first pressed lol.

    • @AuntieHauntieGames
      @AuntieHauntieGames 4 года назад

      @@nickduerr6400 In the simplified rules of D&D, the ship is a single object. Attempting to stop the ship from moving is attempting to hold back its entire weight, thus the rod fails.
      Additionally, only a DC30 strength check is required to move the rod 10 feet. Chances are high that the force needed to accelerate 500 tons to 1000 tons up to even one mile per hour is more than enough to beat the equivalent strength check.

    • @nickduerr6400
      @nickduerr6400 4 года назад +2

      @@AuntieHauntieGames I find your answer highly amusing but I fail to see how any dm worth his salt would consider something as complex as a ship a single object. That would be saying you couldn't damage a small portion of it without destroying the entire thing. By that line of thinking if you were to try to escape a ship by cutting a hole in the hull with an axe you would have to chop the entire ship to splinters before that one 2 ft opening could be hacked open. The idea is simply absurd. While dnd's rules are simple they are designed that way to allow flexibility on the dm's side. As it is not some sort of video game where every object is indestructible or has a hit point pool that determiners if the object is broken or not. In addition the weight of something has very little to do with the amount of force it has, until you take into consideration surface area and momentum. Now if you consider the weight limit. Most likely the ship exceeds it, causing the rod to fail to stay up IF it is holding the ship still. But that would be if you had the ship balanced on it or something. If the ship is holding itself up and the rod is simply stoping it from moving then that rod isn't holding a large percentage of the weight. In addition when you consider how small the surface area of the rod is in comparison to the ship the most likely thing to happen is it would break the hull of the ship in the location of the rod, along with a small area around it. Metal bends and deforms after all, not to mention how easily would splinters and breaks under concentrated pressure. Therefor the only way I would even consider it making since for a ship to deactivate it is if it's made out of some sort of super natural material that can not bend or break even with up to 8000lbs of pressure applied by an object weighing a mere 2 lbs. Tho if you think about it this process would also most likely deform the rod to the point where it could never be deactivated afterwords or during, if it is breaking through anything with a hardness equal to it's own or stronger (that being iron so really anything above wood or such lol) though this would still cause significant damage to the ship of course even if the rod does break. And of course if it was a child that doesn't know basic physics as the dm then I could also be fairly understanding and would merely seek to correct them, or if they are very young just let them have their fun and make sure to include it in their lessons latter. Hope that clarifies some things for you and shows why the rod would in fact not just deactivate without breaking itself or the ship.
