Temple Grandin, you are my hero. Thank you for showing me all my life I wasn't a mental/social/intelligent mess; rather my brain is simply wired differently.

I used to hate math until the age of 21 and like Temple said, I had to get out there and learn how to do it. In fact, I discovered that I liked it.

Amazing woman. Not only can I relate to her because of my autism, but generally she speaks wonderfully with such honesty and insight. I would be honored to meet her one day. :)

I agree entirely. Students are judged by their ability in very definite areas, but that's not how things work. People excel in certain areas and fall behind in others. I myself have a complete inability to calculate anything mathematical, and so I was perceived to be as relatively stupid in high school.
I am more artistically inclined, and since I have done tertiary schooling I have realized I'm not stupid - I received honors and was the top of my class in the particular field I studied.

I'm 15 years old and for years now I've been aware that something's different with the way that I am. I've been doing research and finding all of these disorders that seemed truly accurate to my condition. But since two or three days ago, I've been looking up things having to do with Autism and DID (Dissociative Identity Disorder) and it's very apparent that these two are what I have and what have caused the other things I also think I have. It's very overwhelming being aware of everything now..

I detested algebra, I still do. No teacher could make me understand what I perceived as compete nonsense. It's a real shame that many school systems judge a students 'success' or 'intelligence' by their ability in algebra alone.

I taught my nephew to add and subtract with rubber balls. We would sit on the floor and play a game. I would roll the ball to him and say 1 + 1 = 2 this was when he was in pre-school. Then have him roll the ball to me and say 2 take away 1 = 1....and so on up to ten.
