- We when to Port Townsend Wa. and talked to these two boat building professionals on how to start in the technical trade of boat building, shipwright and marine systems trades.
Port Townsend Wa. had a rich history with wooden boat building and repair.
Recorded: Jan 2025.
Robert is a true statesmen for the wooden boat trades. I never get tired listening to his experiences and advice on anything on the subject. Patrick , coming from an art background myself, is just cut from the right cloth. I took my sculpture and drawing skills into the world of glass blowing and precision glass tooling. I learned quickly and ended up running my own business. (now retired)
I think everything these guys do is pure art.
I wish I was a younger man.

Good luck to Robert from snowy, cold Montana!

So the truth it starts from sweeping floors cleaning up for yourself and others with no backtalk pay scale when you start is horrendous but hardwork does pay off you become freinds with owners and coworkers you get alot better trusting yourself and others when you get good enough and have enough time doing it there is almost nothing that can't be fixed with your mind and your hands when you have passed 8 years you have seen boats come and boats go same with freinds I am now going on my 17 year I am a foreman in a shipyard and there is no place I would rather be and might I mention Latifa is one wonderfull vessel you guys are working on keep up the good work from sausilito to port Townsend shipwrights will exist as long as we pass down the trade
thanks for the comment.
