Thanks for leaving a comment Saida, I hope you are well today 🙂. I did go through atleast 5 checkpoints before reaching Laâyoune. The area known as Western Sahara was recently recognized by the US government to be a part of the Moroccan kingdom in exchange for Morocco supporting the Israeli government. The area is still classified as a “conflict zone” and although there hasn’t been any fighting in over 40 years due to a ceasefire- there are still I believe UN barracks that exist there to moderate the conflict in case something were to happen. And it’s true the Polisario are headquartered in Tindouf although Laâyoune and Dakhla hold about 90 percent of the population of the native sahraouis while the rest of them live in refugee camps.
