I've been an F&I manager for 20 years in the Northeast. Larry is right about the coatings offered in the Dealership. Most prep departments just wing it with no preparation for the application whatsoever and just want it out of the bay ASAP. He's also right about the tire & wheel coverage especially on high line stuff. The most utilized would be the service contract (extended warranty) we have 2 claims in the shop right now totaling 15 grand. Obviously there's variables but stick with those 2 and do your coatings at a professional shop. These cars come straight fun the factory with plenty of defects. No prep & straight to the professionals for paint correction and coatings.
I work at a dealership in clean up and I can tell you the honest truth a lot of new cars have a lot of problems coming off a truck from sticker residue to bugs etc, sometimes I’m having to go over the car with a-lot of stuff to make it look presentable
Another Amazing and Informative video. While I may never own a high end car like the one featured, I would love to apply the same care to my daily driver. The section on PPF and Coatings and the order they should be applied made sense as you explained it. Thank you for all your hard work and for all the viewers cars who have benefitted from your tips and advice.
Great video Larry! My friends know I love to diy detail and often ask me these questions. I saved your video for sharing in the future as this is the most comprehensive explanation I’ve seen to date.
As a Detailer at a dealership( Larry please don’t hate me for that 😂) I can say PDI plastic can be a nightmare. I get cars in all the time where the plastic came loose and beat against the paint while in transport.
Wish I knew this a few years back when I bought my brand new truck. As a detailer, I should have known but it was my first time ever buying new and thought that the dealer would "take care" of everything. Not a chance. When I went to pick up the truck, they hadn't even washed it. It was filthy. So, as a detailer, the first thing I did when I got it home was a very detailed exterior wash. Well, when I was finished, I was shocked. Multiple deep scratches, multiple areas where there were almost like small pebbles right in the paint, I had purchased the one-time application of life time undercoating and they oversprayed over the entire paint surface, I had 3 paint blemishes called snowballs ( where the paint is a very hazy, white color which was very noticeable on this deep cherry Ram 1500), it had a large banada strip on the hood where it looked like a different color, I'm aassuming someone wiped it before it cured? And, I had a spot on the hood about 2-3" long where it got damaged and removed paint right down to the metal. Now, when I noticed all this I contacted the dealer and they said they'd replace the vehicle, so I looked at 3 other trucks they had there ( same year, make, model and color) and they ALL had the same issues. It took some fighting but they returned my old truck that I traded in, I handed them the keys to the "new" truck that, as they advised me, had to be returned to have hood replaced, rear bumper replaced ( due to the sever staining from the overspray of the undercoating process) and have it completely repainted, which we know won't happen. They put it right back on the lot after a wash and a heavy coat of wax to "hide" a lot of the imperfections. I now know to do a very detailed inspection of the entire vehicle next time.
This is well presented! When we got our new Mini I remembered your F80 M3 video from years ago . I asked the dealer not to prep it and don’t remove the plastic in/out. I spoke to my detailer a few days before and came up with a game plan. Drove straight from the dealer to his shop and let him do the prep and any dent removal(none luckily) it was cool because all the shipping and factory paperwork was still with the car and I kept The dealer actually refunded me 350$ on delivery in cheque as they didn’t have to prep it. The salesman said “I wouldn’t want my car prepped here too”
Hi Larry ! I started my journey as a detailer a while back. I work at a Mazda and Volvo dealership in France. I find it sad that dealerships sometimes do some shady preps, but I guess that’s not really a surprise. The thing with the dealership I work at is that, since it’s a small dealership, the sales department really lets me take the time I need/want to work on a car. I suppose no dealership is identical to another one, but as someone who loves my job and detailing in general, it really bums me out to hear and see what some would do just to get cars out the door. Anyhow, thank you very much for all the tips I learned from you years before I got that job, you’re an inspiration ❤️
Epic my friend…..one of the most informative car detailing videos I have ever seen….thank you. I suggest having a series of videos that are informative on different aspects on car care and detailing….and label them in the play list……lots of people from different countries will find useful…..again thanks for efforts and waiting for similar new material ❤
love Reflex Pro. The thing about ppf is that it's a strong bond and can melt and warp baking in the sun then it cools and may pull paint off when removing if left on for more than 2 to 3 yrs so you'd have to remove and replace it often that's too expensive to ppf a whole car. just do the areas most effected polish n coat the rest. it's cheaper to fix rock chips n scratches than it is to replace film. makes no sense but it does work so 🤔 more people should ppf the headlights but then I wouldn't be restoring them as much lol awesome videos as always Larry 💪
we bought an IX bmw and ask them not to wash or touch it.. we saw that it had some dents and scratches so the day i wash it for the first time we send some pic to the dealership and they wanted to charge us lol.. but we had evidence it was there before we had it. They did a terrible job removing the scratches.. at the end of the day after 2 weeks of bad jobs, i had to detail it myself and its now brand new..
Great video, Larry! You didn't mention a specific grade for the clay (fine, extra fine, etc.). I don't think you mentioned it in some of your older content as well. Could you expand on that in the next video?
I wish I would have seen this when I bought my last car. Granted it was 'only' a Kia K5 but the dealer installed the front license plate mount. Normally just 4 screws but no, they decided to put 6 screws in and 2 right on a angled transition. Thank goodness for Bumper Plugs...
I love your vids so much, you're an inspiration!!! I wonder if at the 22 min mark on this one there's an edit issue? You wipe down with alcohol then apply the coating and wait for the rainbow, in the vid it misses the "apply coating step". No criticism, I know how much work these videos take to create!! Keep em coming, they are so enjoyable and educational. Thanks Larry!
Great car choices for the demo. Do you adjust your pressure washer PSI for various paint or age scenarios? For example, the new Porsche paint and clear chemistry is much newer and very different vs. the vintage MB single stage paint. I'm wondering if that matters when working with a pressure washer.
AMMO NYC Video idea! How to find a local car detailer that takes the same steps as you show. How to find an honest car detailed or something along those lines.
I was interested in a car and the dealer called me and told me they got the car in that day. Told them not to wash it cause I wanted to inspect the paint…The guy told me “Have a good day sir we’ll call the next on the list” Like are you serious? I found out the next guy bought it 14k over MSRP too. I really hate having to deal with dealers.
@ammonyc What is your opinion on sythetic clay? Clay Mitts or clay towels? Seems to cover a little more area faster with a similar result? As always, thanks for the amazing content.
I mean realistically it's possible to do everything he said in like 1 out 20 times. They may even forget to not to touch the car (remove protection film, wash etc) because the car is already sold and they move on to next customer. Also, it may work on cars 100K+ but Honda civics, I don't think so.
How long of a life does the PPF have before it begins to lose its effectiveness and protection and then needs to be redone? Thinking about getting the front clip done and I keep my cars a minimum of 5-8 years.
Great video Larry. We all really enjoyed it. By the way please don't mind share your paint thickness gauge model. Can I get it from Amazon? Thanks and highly appreciated 😊
My worst witnessing: Sat in my car outside a dealership waiting for a friend. 3 new cars were dropped off outside the dealer. A grease monkey stripped the protective covers and washed all 3 cars with a half full 10L bucket and gritty sponge. It was painfull to watch.
Hello Larry, let's say after you remove the plastic yourself at the dealership you notice how dirty vehicle is from transit (probably the train yard). Would the dealership actually let you wash the vehicle there in one of their bays, I'm really curious about that? Trying to inspect a dirty vehicle for imperfections, you might miss something if it is not cleaned. Also when I have bought vehicles, dealerships always tell me they have to do a road test and drive your vehice, how true is that and to what extent do they have to drive it?
hey Larry what can I do if my local bylaws don't allow soap washing in driveway/garages? If I go to a diy shop for bucket washing, I'll have to drive it home before I can do the rest (clay bar... Compound... Ceramic etc) and it'll pick up dirt and contamination etc on the way back.
I remember I had a fully loaded brand new Nissan black on black delivered to a dealership...they literally door dented the car the first day and tried to sell it to me without me noticing. F that.
Fabulous upload. Thats my favourite colour, I am slightly colour blind, protonopia.....whats the exact colour ? Thanks for that. All the best. Oh, I do have an issue with an old scratch that went to metal and now rust. How do I fix ? Is that something you do ? Maybe future or old video ?
Larry, how do you get such thick foam?!?! I can never get good consistency with my pressure washer, it always comes out way too watery. I’ve heard maybe changing to a 1.1 orifice helps? It’s an electric ryobi 2000psi
This is awesome and incredibly informative. Thank you for this!! Question…do these same principles apply to a matte finish car? I’m thinking about a stock matte finish vehicle from a local dealer but not sure if the correction/clay/PPF/coating all apply.

Hello, yes my suggestion was to inspect it at the dealership. As you can see in the video, we peeled off the plastic in the dealership bay. This way there’s no surprises when you take it home.
The best advice is always tell the dealer to do no prep and hand straight over to your detailer. The biggest scam is the dealer applied paint protection...they charge you £500 and do literally nothing, or apply a sealant that is gone by the first wash... Never let the dealer wash it and it could save you hundreds in £$ in less time polishing and restoring the car.
When I bought my new 19 Cruze LS, the F&I guy got very mad because I said no to everything he was trying to sell me. Seriously upset. Those people are total crooks.
Interesting video. That said, I doubt I'll ever be in the financial situation to buy a brand-new car, especially considering how expensive they've gotten. I drive a used Honda Civic and when it's ready to go, it'll probably get replaced by another used Honda Civic. It's all I can realistically afford. I take care of it as best as I can, but it's a 4-season daily driver, and it's only a matter of time before the tin worm claims it. Still, if I ever win the lottery or come into a bunch of cash, I'll keep this in mind.
I remember when I bought my rav4 the dealership told me it was ready for pick up at sunset… got to the dealership and it was dark obviously I can’t see anything and at that point I’m so happy to get into a new car I didn’t check it, WORTH TO WAIT!!! If I had waited till morning I would have seen the scratches on the front fender that don’t buff out 🥹
Told my dealer not to touch my Maverick when it arrived last summer. I drove it home covered in plastic & styrofoam bumpers 😂
Free PPF :)
That's what I did with my mustang. I had no idea you could do that until my cousin told me!
@@AMMO-NYC😭
Must be nice. I asked them not to touch my Maverick and when I showed up to buy it they had literally just washed it and it was dripping wet. Lol.
My dealer bought a detail company to do in-house detail. In this case I trust their work as I know them and their reputation.

When I picked up my car, I insisted they don't remove the plastic. They looked at me like I spoke Egyptian to them. But they left the plastic on.
I think there was an editing error at 22:18. You cut out the step where you actually apply the ceramic coating.
