Bruce - Nice job! Only error I (retired EMD engine design engineer) noted is your direction of engine rotation. EMD rail engines are left hand rotation, or CCW, viewed from the rear. Some marine versions are right hand rotation.

They are pretty common on eBay. I was able to find one for a 567a pretty quickly.

These engines use welded framework due to the fact that cast blocks are too stiff and can crack when used in locomotives that are constantly exposed to the rigors of railway travel-- this according to the EMD display at SteamTown, Pa.

Brilliant idea at GM to use a welded-up engine frame (block) with inserted cast iron cylinders.

cast blocks are much heavier and are harder to fix if freeze damage. These also can be totally rebuilt int the bottom of a tugboat.

What makes emd engine sound different than GE or Alco?

EMD's are 2-strokes, which means that every cylinder fires in one crankshaft revolution. GE and Alco engines are 4-stroke, which means that it takes 2 revolutions of the crankshaft for all cylinders to fire. Basically the EMD sounds like it's running twice as fast because the cylinder firing rate is doubled.

Over complicating very simple concepts. Or he is lecturing 8th graders.
