There is no bad Zep album. It's simply the genius of Zep filtered in different ways at different times, different influnces.
Ehh, yeah....this is about as close as they came to "bad". In record sales it beat Presence supposedly, which to me is mind blowing. Presence is SO much better..a few decent moments on this record, Carouselambra and I'm gonna crawl are great...otherwise ehh.
For me, "Fool In The Rain" is one of their best tracks.
That’s fair, some are better than others, but none are “bad”
For Led Zeppelin standards, this is kind of a weak album. In The evening is a good song, Fool in the rain has a memorable drumming pattern but the rest of the song is kinda average. Carouselambra is a unique song, you either hate it or love it. Overall FOR LED ZEPPELIN STANDARDS, not a good album....but still better than 95% of what the rest of the music industry would be able to produce. I am a musician and a music enthusiast and this is the only LZ album I don't feel the need to buy. The only one not being part of my collection
I don't have Coda either, but I mean I wouldn't even consider it an album. That's a collection of outtakes
Always loved this unique Zepplin tune. I don't think any other band could have created it and delivered it. What is it? Rock? Prog? Funk? A love ballad? Yes.
Rather than conforming to the 80’s sound, it was more like INTRODUCING AND LEADING the 80’sound. Difference!
Agreed.
They were WIDELY considered bloated by then. I didn't care. I worship JPJ keys
This album was released during my senior year of high school. I was a hardcore Zeppelin fanatic. I was stunned and honestly depressed because it was so different. I was young and dumb though! It’s a phenomenal album just like all of them were. Perspectives change as we plow through the ages. Zeppelin never gets old!❤
Yah, I was a sophomore, finally crossing over from Zep fan to fanatic. All my Zep fan friends were so psyched, cos they were finally gonna tour again (they HAD to, right??) after releasing this. Sure enuf, plans were made, excitement built. The day after Bonham died, I met my friend Chris in the hallway. We locked eyes and one of us greeted the other with just one word. "Shit." No explanation for saying it was necessary.
@@joescott8877 For me it was like Don McClean said. “The day, the music Died “ 43 years later I still mourn the loss of Bonham
@@UglyDoug304 For real. In a weird but i hope understandable way, I'm quite glad Zeppelin disbanded after they lost him.
I had pretty much the same reaction, and I was a HS Junior at the time.
I love this album. In a way Robert Plant's first two solo albums are a follow up and evolution from this album. I hope you guys do The Song Remains The Same movie reaction.
By the time this album was made, JPJ and Plant were the 2 sober band mates who put this entire album together as both Page and Bonham were going through their addictions and weren't as impactful on this album as they were on others.
Nice...very diplomatic way of saying "it stinks.." haha....XD
LOL!!! Not! Sucking in that catalog is better than 90% of what was out there. @@mr.snicker-doodles7081
This album is more balanced instrumentally because JPJ not only played bass but also used synthi/key. It wasn't an 80's sound on purpose, it was made out of necessity because Page and Bonzo weren't always around.
Carouselambra (unfortunately never live) and I'm Gonna Crawl are masterpieces, All My Loving of course with a profound background and for a change I've always been addicted to the simple catchy Fool In The Rain/US single.
Have fun with all kind of good music!!!
PS Evening might already be on the "military" predecessor; I found/find the first side a bit weaker.
The Inside Sleeve of this album was a bar scene in black/white, covered in Black Dots. Turns out, the Black Dots are water colored paint. If you take a wet brush, and drag it across the dots, colors come out. Found out by accident after spilling beer on the sleeve in the early 80's...(lol)
Holy cow
IMO " I'm gonna crawl " is the best song on the album 😊
Love it. Agreed.
IMO the top guitar solo of all the studio albums. Reaches deep and pulls the emotions right out.
I have a specific memory of a lost love, a good friend, a bottle of Jack, shared tears and this song!
Hits me in those feels to this day....every time!
After decades of separation, that "lost love" is now my wife....thank you, Led Zeppelin.
Robert Plants very young son died on July 26 1977 a few days before zep was supposed to play the super dome in New Orleans. i was to little to go but all my uncles all had tickets and they had to cancel the show. my uncles still have their tickets. it was about then i knew i would never see Led Zeppelin live. i will go to my grave with a broken heart becuase of that. RIP Karac Pendragon Plant. The song All of my love is Karacs song. GOD BLESS YOU LITTLE BROTHER KAEAC
The final studio album. However there is one more called Coda which is a collection of songs that didn't make it on to any albums. It's worth checking out when you finish this one.
This song makes me cry.. I think this was a message from Robert to Jimmy. "So don't you let her get under your skin" "it's only bad luck and trouble" " She don't show no pity" " I hear you crying in the darkness" " you can only blame yourself" " One day soon it's got to stop" Robert was angry at Jimmy bc of his addiction.. Bonzo was also drinking during this time.
Robert's lyrics in Carouselambra are much more direct and critical of Jimmy. There was a lot of resentment there.
@@tektoniks_architects I was just looking at the lyrics of Carouselambra, but not sure what to make of them.. I remember years ago after reading about Zeppelin's problems and looking at In the Evening, I thought: man that sounds like Robert singing to Jimmy about.... And I remember seeing a live concert where Robert turns to Jimmy, looks at him and sings loudly " One day soon it's got to Stop! Stop! Stop!" as Jimmy was playing drenched in sweat, and smiles at Robert..
I can’t think of a “bad” Zep album. I liked some better than others. I did like this song, mostly for the melody. You guys are right on, observing that the sound of their music evolved with the times. Your knowledge of production and “feel” for the music make your channel heads above any other. Thanks guys!
@@tektoniks_architectsnah, Led was Jimmy's band, no way is he gonna let Robert dog on him through their song. Besides, they all loved each other
@@Michael-PhilipRobert once said that one day the person that Carouselambra is about is going to realise it. It was critical of Jimmy for offering no comfort or help when Robert's son died while they were on tour. It also criticises the lifestyle of the band and its detachment from reality.
New album out. New tour announced. So excited to go! So pissed and sad the tour was cancelled due to the deayh of Bonham. RIP
"Fool In The Rain" is probably the biggest hit from that album but "Hot Dog" is one that will have you smiling.
I thought I was the only one that loved Hot Dog!
@@independenceltd. I don't get it either. Maybe some people don't like that it has a southern rock sound, which I love. Good music is good music. From any genre.
This came out just after their August Knebworth concerts 1979 . Bonzo died September 25th 1980 and just like Neil Peart of Rush we fans have still not got over the sad losses ..❤❤❤This is a great great album ..
This live in 1979 was fantastic!
@@juliemanarin4127 yep was at the 4th august gig 🥰🥰🥰❤️❤️❤️😘😘👌👌
What also should be mentioned is "Carouselambra" from this same album. An absolute standout for the band but esp. John Paul Jones.
Carouselambra is my favorite song on this album. Always try to figure out how Jimmy got his guitar to sound like that, mesmerizing.
It sure is a newer sound. Thinking “Carouselambra” of course. But if you want slow blues, the last track “I’m gonna crawl”, will hit the spot. A great solo and sadly their last song.
Solid album with mixture of classic Zep tunes. Fool in the Rain one of Robert’s best vocals. Heart felt All of my Love about his son Karac who I named my son after in his honor and the bluesy I’m gonna Crawl which takes us back to the early days to end the album.
I was really impressed with Zeppelin expanding their range yet again. I'm not always the biggest Robert Plant fan, but he knocked it out of the park here. He really stepped up. I've got to temper my bias. Plant's voice is an instrument like no other.
They managed to move into the 80's changing to stay with the times while still maintaining all their Led Zeppelinism
Was a bit confused when I had my first listen, probably because back then I'd not heard this 80s sound you speak of.
Sure, do now.
I really had to play this over and over the first few times to really enjoy it.
"I'm Gonna Crawl" is killer.
Robert's (JPJ) "All My Love" is poignant.
Your expertise shows, enjoy your channel, much respect.
I bought this Album on the day of it's release in 1979. Don't know how you interpret them conforming to the 80s sound.
Take Note: LED ZEPPELIN CONFORMS TO NO ONE OR ANYTHING!
Fun Fact: There were 4 different covers for the Album.
It was sold in a paper bag sleeve, a "grab bag"surprise if you will. The Bar in the photo was in New Orleans. BONUS:
There were also 4 different paper inner sleeves for the Albums, featuring scenes from said Bar, illustrated in Black Ink drawings. You then take a damp sponge and swipe it over the sleeve, and the dampened surface magically colorized! Thus, a clue of what to do is found on the outside cover, a swash revealing color undertones on Sepia toned photo. 🇨🇦 🍁 🇨🇦
The cover photo is a recreation of the Old Absinthe House, in New Orleans. But it was shot in a studio in London.
I was just going to leave a comment about how Zep NEVER conformed to anything nor anyone ever. They were anti-conformist if anything.
The only reason this album had more keyboards on it was because Jimmy and Bonzo were both in the midst of addiction at the time and the album suffered for it, though it went straight to #1 anyhow. With Page and Bonham absent, the album lacked the ‘balls’ of all the previous albums.
Damn, I sure love Carouselambra, In The Evening and I’m Gonna Crawl (simply for Page’s guitar solo in it). ☺️
settle down gatekeeper.
This album is fraught with devastation; Robert's 5-year-old son passed away from a viral stomach infection. Robert was seriously (and understandably) lost as to what was the meaning of life and where did he fit and what did he want. Both Bonzo and Jimmy tried to help him refocus and come back to work; sadly, more destruction was to come. I love this song. It sounds hard and slightly otherworldly. The opening drone isn't Jimmy using the bow but a device called a Gizmotron effect that was created by two guys from the group 10cc. The hard crashes where you said it sounded like they let Jimmy out of his cage, was him raking the tremolo bar down hard across the guitar strings. They were indeed again ahead of their time musically in creating guitar and synth tones that foreshadow 80s techno-rock. The lyrics reference some of the pain and grief people go through in their lives regardless of the amount of fame or money they have. I like how your ear has become experienced in Zep's sound enough to recognize elements in the music. It's one of the many reasons why I often suggest people go in album/track order if they *really* want to learn the band. Instead, they jump throughout the catalogue and when they hear something from later in their discography, they're shocked and wonder how it's Led Zeppelin. I'm glad you guys get it. EDITED TO ADD: I'm going to make my case now for also doing CODA after this album. I explained it's importance to the catalogue in my previous email to you when I sent links for some live Zep. Please do finish everything - you won't regret it.
Very well said!
I think the best song is the last one, I'm Gonna Crawl. A sweet 12 bar blues arrangement.
I'm laughing my ass off. You guys are going to absolutely love this album. It's so sad to think that Bonzo died right after this because based on this measure it against their whole career before that of what 10 years I guess? Wow. I think they were poised to just do all kinds of amazing things going forward as well. But you will know what I'm talking about after you have heard all the songs on this album. And believe me. Each one is different, but totally kicks ass, lol
The sound you hear at the beginning of the track is not a violin bow....it is a device called a Gizmotron, developed by the band 10cc. Glad you've moved onto In Through The Out Door....lots of surprises coming.
And Bonzo working the pedals on the kettle drums
This album gets a lot of hate but I have always loved it. R.I.P. Bonzo
I just love that soft interlude and the "Oooooh whatever" when beat drops and pulls you back in. Genius. And all the layers of Jimmy doing little guitar fills...so cool.
❤ Waiting for Carouselambra and I'm Gonna Crawl. :) There's still another album - CODA - with songs that didn't make it to the preceding albums - hope you'll check that out as well. Thanks!!!!
you boys are bold reacting to Zeppelin in front of the world…i don’t know that i have the balls to do the same 😊
As you know Presence was a very Page forward album, it had no keyboards, and JPJ had only one writing credit. This album the roles switched. Lots of keys and piano and JPJ was very much in the forefront in writing as well. Also with the overall sound, it was recorded in Polar studios, which is where Abba recorded a majority of their albums.
Don't forget The Song Remains the Same. Great live album 1976
This was one of my first Zeppelin experiences, and it remains one of my favorites to this day. Still can't understand Plant's lyrics, but that's not uncommon, nor do I care!
They were my band. I was hardcore. I was not knocked out by this at the time. "Fool in the Rain" is worth the price of admission...
Came out just before Bonham died. Last song is MAGIC - I'm gonna crawl
A song I love from this album is "South Bound Suarez" The piano and all that flavor!
I *love* this song, and "In Through the Out Door" in general, but it did take years for me to get used to the evolution of their sound on this album. For years, I didn't care as much for this album, because it doesn't rock as hard as their other ones. In recent years, I've come to love the musical diversity of this one. They weren't conforming to the '80s. They were helping to *create* the '80s sound back in 1979. "Carouselambra" will blow your minds! 🙂
Here it is fellas, the last Zeppelin studio album!!! When it first came out I was befuddled!!! I slowly came to like this album alot!!! I'm gonna crawl and fool in the rain are the tracks I dig most!!!
Oh yes, My favorite LZ album.
I wanted to say thanks for something. I have a DVD set of Zep spanning concerts from the beginning to end, and I watched it for the first time in quite some time. Before watching your reactions, I was always fat more focused on Page and Plant, but last night I watched with a different set of eyes, focused instead on JPJ and Bonham based on all the observations the two of you have pointed out. It was like a whole new experience for me, and I gained a whole other level of respect for JPG & Bonham. It was fun to watch, thanks guys!
According to Page, before the unexpected death of Bonham, the two had already discussed that the next album was going to be a return to a harder edge sound.
This song is very similar to the sound Jimmy used when he recorded his 1st album with "The Firm" (82) ... The album was a disappointment to some, but for me personally, I enjoyed anything they put out! My fav on the album, "Fool In The Rain" makes my top 10 list!
Yes, using the Strat.
Paul Rogers pulled Jimmy out of a dark hole, teeth all rotted, bone thin, all junked out and close to death .. you can see it in the live performances sadly. I think Jimmy would have died if it wasn't for Paul.
🙃👍 fantastic.
As usual, they were way ahead of the curve.
Great analogy about letting Jimmy out of the cage .. That solo is sneaky good... Just so out of the box... Almost like he stumbles over the guitar and then soars into sound, truly original, never heard a solo like it
You guys are gonna love this album. It's like a mature led zeppelin. Great songs. Well played. Thanks for one more. Love you guys zep reactions.
Most of the big bands had a rough start to the 80s, but they are some of my favorite rcords. Like the Stones Emotional Rescue, and Tattoo You, this album from Zep is often overlooked, and even classic rock radio will skip right over these.
So glad your doing this album! It’s underrated and under appreciated.
My older sister introduced me to Led Zeppelin in 1983 (I was 9 or 10) when she gave me a copy of In Through the Out Door. In the Evening was the first song on the album, so it was the first song I heard. I probably rewound and listened to it 10 times before I even let the tape play any further. It totally blew me away, and was my first "Favorite" Zeppelin song. Until I heard :Fool in the Rain" 2 songs later. I've had so many "Favorite" eppelin songs I cant remember them all any more. And this guitar solo was instrumental (hah) in inspiring me to become a guitar player. A couple of times it sounds like Page threw the guitar down a flight of stairs. So brilliant,
Thank you, Shelly, rest in peace, I love you and I miss you every day.
My favorite on this is the last song "I'm gonna crawl"
Their music still sounds great today. Great reaction fellas. Appreciate you 🙏 ❤
I love all the Zeppelin albums but this one is my fav.
I cherish this album because it’s literally the last studio recordings of the great John Bonham. My lifelong drumming idol ❤
Traveling riverside blues !!!!!!!
I’m Going to Crawl is Awesome and know you fellas will love the groove. I sure do
Everything they did was magnificent! This live in 1979 at knebworth was fabulous! JPJ did alot of mixing and composing on this album!
My favorite album after III. 👍 "Fool In The Rain" and "All My Love" stand out for me, but the whole album is super cool. 🤘
You guys are definitely doing the Zeppethon!!!
You guys have got to listen to the song “Fool in the rain” if you haven’t already. I believe it’s on this same album.
Yes! Wait 'til you get to 'fool in the rain' off this record - killer!
To tale on the commentary...Plant and Jones showed up in Stockholm, Sweden to start revording ITTOD on time, and when Page and Bonham got there, the Album had mostly been written. To me, it was a unique collection of songs that with any of their other albums had that Zeppelin stamp and sound on it! Those 4 guys were Led Zeppelin!!
I get a strong west coast USA rock vibe listening to this track for the first time in ages. You are right they are leaning into the 80's. Does anyone recall that picture, it might have been taken around the time of Knebworth 79 and they are wearing soft blouson shirts and pants with pleats. The skin type jeans had been ejected, the raw blues were gone .... almost there is a lean into middle age and the image i get is of Robert Palmer playing this music with the girls in mini skirts doing a two step behind him .... This album was a massive shock for me and many fans at the time. It does have its mature moments for sure.
I think the picture you are referring to is the 4 of them standing in a field. Yes, a definite 80s, new wave vibe. Hippie days long gone. I absolutely adore hippie Zep, but like this also.
That's the picture yes ! @@wiredhorn87 Yes i hear you. But the question i ask myself is ' would i have bought this album if it was the only album Zeppelin ever made. And for me no, I wouldn't, but as part of a catalogue of work, it's interesting and touching.
ITTOD was primarily a Plant and JPJ album which had a more progressive sound and was certainly an 80's preview with more synthesizers, Page and Bonham obviously were involved but took a bit of a backseat and also had other "issues" to contend with. Still a solid record and a 3 out of 5. In the Evening is still one of the best intros ever..
This album was on the road with me in the early 80s. I traveled all over for 25 years. So if it's on the road with me 👍. You can only fly around with so many cassettes for your Walkman. I think the entire album is great. "I'm Gonna Crawl" is one of my favorites. I've had their whole catalog since the 70s. A lot of Zep fans didn't like this album.
Yes, In through the Outdoor. Thanks for reacting to this album. There's some gems here. You guys are a blessing!
Love this album!!!! Great song!❤
JPJ was indeed a huge influence on this album having co-written 6 of the 7 songs on the album. Zeppelin was not finished experimenting, you'll see soon. Thanks for the reaction.
Page is so creative with his use of the wammy bar. No one plays like this.
Sonically one of their best.
JPJ had bought a new synthesizer which affected the overall sound of the album, along with it being recorded in ABBA's studio, where they were given free studio time. It's like every Zep album: totally unique
This last one almost didn't get made following the death of Plant's five year old son during the last tour in 77. Somehow they got him back in the studio. So you have a very experimental record. Atmospherically similar to the vibe of the album cover. Smokey late night bar, and some dude burning a Dear John letter. Zeppelin and the blues. Together till the end, which was very near.
hello, the drop down in the guitar solo is a very special thing indeed . also the album art work is cool too there are pictures of the different variations of point of view of all the people in the room, and the inner sleeve had a cartoon veiw of the top of the bar in black and white, ( glass of whiskey and a book of matches and an ash tray with a dear john letter burning in it and if you licked your finger and rubbed the sleeve the colour would come through . all my best to you and yours from Liverpool
Yeah, it has an Art Deco, prohibition, depression era vibe to it. Zeppelin used a lot of Art Deco fonts and lines in their cover art. It can especially be seen on Mothership lp. Then again, we're talking about the Hindenburg Disaster that happened in '37. Same era. I don't think it's any coincidence.
@@wiredhorn87 i like the way this album came in a brown paper bag like it has somthing iffy in it like alcohol or porn
@@peteroneill3993It fits. Booze in a brown paper bag. Just like the era. As a Zeppologist, I have deep theology on Zep aesthetics and nuance. There's a lot going on with the heavy/light, dark/soft, design aesthetics, heavy Romanticism in their lyrics, music, look, etc.
I love Caroselambra from this album. Yes, the 80's arrived. I did not appreciate it when it first came out.
Another one the greatest Zep/ any songs of all-tyme
"Im Gonna Crawl"...cant wait!!🎶❤🎵
WAIT TILL U GET TO "FOOL IN THE RAIN".....STONE COLD GROOVE...one of the greatest Bonham beats ever
Hi La and Che ... “ fool in the rain” is the masterpiece from this album ...
Thank you! I love this whole album so much. Yes, you can hear the 80s coming in but LZ were in full control of how they were evolving and they did a great job of taking the good parts of their earlier stuff and moving forward in rock history.
YOU GUYS HAVE TO REACT TO FOOL IN THE RAIN!!!!!!! ITS A MUST!!!
Shout out to @JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories for his documentary on this album.
Great album !!!!
JPJ basically arranged all of this with Plant since Page was fighting Heroin and Bonham was drinking VERY heavily and passed away about a year later on September 24 /25 1980 after having FOUR quadruple screwdrivers (16 shots) for BREAKFAST and kept drinking all day after that. The October 1980 autopsy estimated that he had over FORTY shot equivalents in the 24 hours before his death overnight on Sep 25.... I remember being 14 in 1980 and living through the death of Bonham and John Lennon back to back
The knebworth live version was cool.
They experimented with alot of different sounds. Together and independently. It was a precursor to 80s style heavy metal, but there were alot of other bands doing the same sound too. UFO, VanHalen, Ozzy, AC/DC......
I think “All of my Love” is my favorite from this album. It’s one of the most beautiful songs I’ve ever heard.
I like the songs from this when I heard them on the radio but like a lot of people being very young, I felt like they had softened up a bit or something so I didn't hold it in as high esteem although I definitely liked the stuff and we had good times listening to it. But now that I'm older and a musician for a long time, it's apples and oranges each of their albums. But this to me is a masterpiece it is incredible. There is such mind-blowing stuff on this and keep in mind that they were going on a decade and they were changing with the times and I think still being Innovative and leading the way in a lot of areas.
This album was so different to me. But to me they were geniuses. It's a shame bonham died 1year after this came out. I still wonder what they would have accomplished moving on.
Jimmy Page not only played guitar but also produced most of the material but, at this point he was so wacked out on drugs that Jon Paul Jones took over for this album. This is why it sounds so different.
This is a favourite for me. Since you’ve highlighted instrumentation I listen more to the artist’s musicianship🇦🇺👍🇺🇸
The live Knebworth version is awesome
The Led Zeppelin Journey continues - so happy to see this, thanks guys!
They gave total control to John Paul jones on this album every song composed, written, and arranged by him.
More control, but not “total” control… “All of my love” and “south bound suarez” are the only 2 tracks that don’t have writing credits for Page. And just like every other album, Page is the sole producer. JPJ and Plant had much more control then before, but “total control” is not accurate. I think it’s a fantastic album, and deserves more praise then it gets.
Not total control. Plant and JBJ wrote the songs because Bonzo and Page were too high and didn't make the recording sessions. Then Page and Bonzo wrote their parts later when they sobered up.
This is not accurate. JPJ played a bigger role than usual on this album, largely because Jimmy was so messed up on drugs, but JPJ *absolutely did not* compose and write every song on this album. He didn't even write one song on ITTOD by himself, with no songwriting input from Robert and Jimmy. Check out the album's song credits. Robert and Jimmy were *both involved* in composing/writing five of the seven songs.
this album has mixed reviews from their own fans..
some hated it, but those who knew how zep evolved between albums would take the journey & grown to love this "new" sounds, and might consider it as their best album, including me 👌
Nail on the head .This is JPJ album but keep in mind that Jimmy was on a heroin trip by this point and yes it had that 80s sound but Zep did it 1st and everyone else followed ,not their best but in my opinion still a fire album with my fave Zep song I'm Gonna Crawl straight blues..thanx guys
one of the best intros of all time
This beginning of the end
🤠 We are going to have us an epic hoedown on this 1st side. The hoedown to end all hoedowns, from Led Zeppelin, if you can imagine that. 🤠🤔
One of my favorite Zep songs
If I see this song in the day I try to remember to play it that evening
This might seem to the the lesser of the Led Zeppelin albums (but you can't tell that by all the comments here!) but the day in 1979 I brought this home from the record store, and sliced the cellophane wrapping around the brown paper bag cover over the album - the excitement was electric! If I had known I had bought the last Led Zep album, I probably would have cried!
This is a great start to a great album!
Recorded at ABBA’s polar recording studios with a couple of their guys engineering plus the use of modern synthesisers might account for some of the pop sensibilities that are on display on this album.
I love this album! It sometimes gets overlooked but I think it’s really good!
Even better seeing it live
Love this album. Be prepared to have your socks knocked off repeatedly 😂
