Ohhh noo, where the crawdads sing was honestly one of my favourites. I was taken aback by the imagery and descriptions. But I am a bit of a nature girly.

I’m almost done “things we never got over” and it took me about half the book to really care or want to keep reading. So far I’ve liked the second half lol it definitely was a verrrrrrrrry slow burn

As someone who has read most of CoHo's books (and has kind of lost interest in them all), her most popular books are heavily toxic relationships and majority of the time that's why I don't enjoy them. HOWEVER... I would say some of the ones that don't get as much hype (that I did enjoy) aren't on the same level as her most popular books. I could be remembering wrong, but I don't think Regretting You, Confess, or Heart Bones is toxic, but does contain flawed people. I will say though that I think a lot of people like reading toxic relationships because they bring about a lot of drama and tension to the story, which can be interesting to some. It's not really my cup of tea, but I can see why people read them.
I also don't think we should be holding fictional works to the standard of depicting only healthy relationships because people are inherently flawed, and thus it's realistic to show both the bad and the good, but more importantly, fiction is not intended to be used as a means of life advice or guidance. And if anyone is reading these fictional books with the intent of applying the thoughts, feelings, and actions of these characters into their own personal life, then they are too young and are not the intended audience.
With all that said, I do agree that none of these books are worth the hype. 😂

I like reading dark romance books with sometimes toxic leads. I always know what I'm getting though, and they are clear in the blurb, ads, etc. You understand what you're going to get and there's a separation where, okay in fiction I like this and they're usually outlandish situations, but in real life red flags are everywhere.
My issue with Colleen Hoover's toxic relationships is how she writes them as contemporary romances and as though they're normal every day relationships that are #goals.

Just finished Verity and no thank you! I loved Where The Crawdads Sing. And yes, I'll still continue to watch your videos. 😅 ❤

I agree on most of your books, those that I had read😄 For me it's sarah j maas 😂 I tried her books so many times😅 But it's not for me. Emily Henry is another author. I read three of her books. I loved Book lovers ( 4 stars), but didn't like People we meet on vacation and beach read. So I just gave up on her. I tried reading Shatter me back in the days but only read two books. I think it's interesting to see people like different things or have completely different opinions about the same book. So even if some people don't like my favorite books, I still like them😘

I agree about the Shatter Me series. It is intriguing that it has risen in popularity again. I dnf-ed it back in the day after the 2nd book. I don’t get the hype.

I absolutely love both the FBAA and ASITE series. I don’t recommend them to people because a lot of people feel it’s slow and boring, and that slow, meandering plot is one of my favorite things about it. I like machinations and lots of conversations in my fantasy in general, but definitely in my fantasy romance. And at the end of the day, I’m reading JLA for the relationships and the characters and not for a super fast plot. So she can do no wrong with me. Lol. I’m the same about SJM, though her plots are generally better and more pacy. Their characters just are some of my all-time favorites. I LOATHE Colleen Hoover, though. Verity is the only book that I have read where I literally flung across the room as hard as I could, and then threw in the trash. I wouldn’t even put it in the sell/donate stacks. 😂😂 I hated everything about it, and about the way it was such an awful portrayal of women who don’t want kids. I didn’t want them for myself either for a few reasons, but I love kids in general. I’m also not a murderous psychopath. My nephew is the best thing to ever exist. I just felt like everyone in that book was awful, sick, twisted, and manipulative. Whew….I’ll calm down now. Talking about it runs my blood pressure up! I will say that I think they get talked about too much, which leads to some people hating them just because they’re popular. I loved Fourth Wing as well, but a lot of the people read it and hated it just because “there was too much romance.” In a romance fantasy novel, there was too much romance. People were judging it for being what it said it was. 😂
I haven’t read any of the others you mention, but JLA and SJM are in my comfort reading list. I had Icebreaker but no one seems to like it and contemporary is not a fave of mine. Their writing craft isn’t always the best, no, but I’m not looking for that. When I want lyrical, beautiful prose, I read literary fiction or literary crime/thrillers or classics.

I've enjoyed a few CH books but she's not a favorite author. I enjoyed Where the Crawdad's Sing but really liked the movie. Hockey romance.......I love hockey and have been excited to see the sports romance books popping out however I'd like to see some that aren't featuring all college aged characters. I want to read Powerless by Lauren Roberts. I see it quite a bit right now.

It's so refreshing to hear someone else isn't a Colleen Hoover fan. the only book of hers that I absolutely love is Ugly Love, it's one of my all-time favorite books, but the rest, I just cannot stand them.

I bought Icebreaker when it came out because I fell for the hype…and it’s been sitting on my bookshelf ever since. I’m going to put it in my unhaul pile because I have no interest in it now. I’ve learned that I really don’t care for any book that’s mentioned on BookTok, but that’s why I love my BookTube :)

I enjoyed It Ends With Us, but I made sure to lower my expectations. I knew it wasn’t a romance and it was heavy on the DV.
I grabbed Where the Crawdads Sing in a little free library. I know nothing about it because I ignored the hype and the movie trailers. Not in a rush to read it.
We Were Liars is another book I found in a LFL. I liked it. Beauty of not being on booktok is that I didn’t know what it was.

I agree with you completely on Where the Crawdads Sing. I just don’t get it. I’m a bit worried because I have It Ends With Us AND Shatter Me on my shelves. I generally hate YA so I should probably just unhaul that. The big hype I don’t agree with is Fourth Wing. I hated it. Totally!! It’s like Harry Potter for adults, but the adults act like immature teenagers.

Where the crawdads sing was so boring…. I could not finish it!
It Ends With Us was not worth the hype at all! I hated it too but I do wanna read the second book just to know what happens
Beach Read wasn’t worth the hype at all in my opinion. It was so boring to me

But why is it wrong to write about toxic relationships? It's VERY relatable to everyday life. People dont have always healthy relationships. No one is glorifying these relationships but they are relatable. Im neutral with her but i believe its just popular to hate her.
