The vulcan was included in the airshow about 10 years back I will never forget it flew over our home and the whole house and floor was shacking and it was still about 2000 feet not even afterburner on!!! Vulcans were ahead of the game & fitted with 'Red Shrimp' airborne high-bandwidth radar countermeasure/jammer. Although such systems are common today back then it was groundbreaking technology. Vulcans could blind localised early warning/detection systems, blind other aircrafts radars & even project 100's of ghost aircraft to confuse the enemy. They were almost unstoppable as they turned an enemy's own radar detection systems into a liability. As one Soviet General put it after the end of the cold war, they had countermeasures against every NATO weapon delivery system in that era but nothing to stop those Vulcans they gave him nightmares.

Very much a David and Goliath story. The US depend on large numbers and muscle, the Brits rely on small numbers and tactics.
There are situations where both approaches are needed, and when you combine the two together we are an unstoppable force.
Complacency is the mother of all fuckups and the US gained a much needed kick in the bollocks to wake them up.
If an enemy tells you you're being a dick you just hurl abuse back at them, but when a friend tells you the same it makes you stand up and take notice.

When I was a teenager living in Lincoln we regularly heard Vulcans flying overhead, because there were RAF bases either side of Lincoln at Scampton and Waddington.
In the 1970s, I went to an air show at RAF Waddington, and they staged a simulated scramble of four Vulcan bombers taking off together. The noise had to be felt to be believed.
The Vulcans were used in the longest distance bombing raids ever, the Black Buck raids on Port Stanley airport during the Falklands War.
    The Vulcans were fantastic!

Over confidence amounts to carelessness. The second strike only a year later by that time should not have been successful . Little wonder that the US denied it happened even once. David and Goliath with a sling shot - TWICE but at least the US learned how vulnerable they were and that was the reason for the exercise in the first place

Vulcan bombers need roughly 7500ft of runway (take off weight dependent), I'd suggest it's not used for Strategic Nuclear bombers. Especially since it's in part owned by the community and operates private aircraft. It's exceedingly unlikely that a civilian operated airport would be the home base for an air based nuclear threat.

The Vulcan was an absolute monster of a bomber in its day as dvanced and dangerous as stealth bomber is today it could cruise higher than most fighters could reach at full burn carry a significant payload including nukes had a vast array of advanced electronic jamming eqipment run by a dedicated crewman in the belly all while flying like a fighter. Even after missile technology made high level bombing unsafe they became excelent low level intruders because the airframe was as solid as a rock. During these trianing exercises the vulcans were flying at the altitude of the best soviet bombers which was significantly less than the Vulcan's actual highest operating altitude. Even when a fighter got lucky and found them the pilot had too climb hard to intercept and if he timed his climb wrong he'd be left burning all his fuel just trying to get close enough for a shot as the bomber cruised on by ignoring him.

I was also very pleased that during the very last flight of the last flying Vulcan, the last airshow it was supposed to do was suddenly changed at short notice, resulting in it returning to my local airfield in Old Warden. Quite a surprise I must say and I felt quite honoured that this local airfield in the middle of Bedfordshire, famous in it's own right for being home of the Shuttleworth Collection, was suddenly the scene of the last public display of the last flying Vulcan.

The American Air Force base had absolutely no idea that the Vulcan was there until the pilot broke radio silence, Telling them they were on final approch and were goung to land.
The chaos this caused for the base was unprecedented, as all the staff rushed to grab cameras and take photos of the Vulcan, which was not supposed to be there.
Getting the cameras, destroying the films and then telling everyone not to breathe a word of what just happened was such a major task.

The 2nd exercise, they halved the number of “attacking” bombers, and double the number of interceptors, and still failed. So their only tactic was to send up more aircraft…which theoretically could’ve worked. I’m sure the US defence planners went right back to the drawing board and updated their tactics.

  • @barnseyfrommossley
    @barnseyfrommossley Месяц назад +2

The RAF used the same tactics on both exercises, you would have thought the USAF would have been ready the second time. Anecdote has it that the one that landed near New York wasn't detected until the pilot contacted the tower asking for permission to land. How true it is, I don't know.

Would be intriguing to find who thought about this though as in" the USA boasting the 99% air defence system and brits saying wanna bet we can nuke you" or brits saying wanna bet we can nuke you and USA no way our defence is 99% effective and will wipe you out the skies before you drop any nukes" or just the normal lets test our defences 😂

Make no bones about it this was a experiment for both the RAF and US defences to see strengths and weaknesses in their current arms...Both would benefit from result findings good or bad...and it was in both interests to keep the results private until way after the cold war for obvious reasons...I find it remarkable that two countries work so closely together that they can do this kind of exercise and trust that the results will not be made public by either party...which they weren't...Long may it continue

During the coold war the British constantly had Vulcans in the air. ALWAYS in the air, they recognised in a nuclear war the UK would be obliterated , so the Vulcans were not intended for a defensive push back but as revenge. They did not enough fuel to nuke their Russian targets and go back.

part of the plan was to take in the fuel use and climb rate of the american fighters, and the willingness of an american pilot to overcommit and not be able to make it home (eg, do the job and then run out of fuel before landing) obviously, with the landing in canada and new york, the RAF knew this was a one way trip, and prepared for such, to be successful they only ever needed to drop the one simulated bomb, thats why 3 ran cover for the 4th, and why 7 out of 8 successes was actually way outside the expected ballpark with the RAF
