Arca Swiss is a great plate in most instances and I use them a lot. but don't throw out the use of a 501 or 701 plate yet... the Arca Swiss is made for lighter gear, and the 501/701 plates are made for heavier gear. I have a cannon 600 mm lens that weighs over 14 pounds attached to my camera, and there is no way that I would trust it to a 1/4 inch screw in a small arca swiss plate.
Great Video!! I just got my first Manfrotto head and thought viewers who historically use Manfrotto plates might like to know this: The NEW Manfrotto plates have all the features of the Arca Swiss shown - top load, slide but can't slide out, etc AND they sit flat on a table top!! Better yet, the plates will take your old Manfrotto 501/701 plates (although I believe these do not have stops and could slide out if you don't tighten the thumb screw). Only drawback is they are still wider than the Arca Swiss. Just FYI about the new Manfrotto stuff in case some viewers want to keep there old Manfrotto plates while having all the benefits of the Arca Swiss!
I honestly think that the Manfrotto RC2 plates way faster to use than these arca swiss plates. The RC2 plates just lock on contact once you pop it in, and peak design also has the dual plate which now works with most Manfrotto heads. The fact that the plate still slides back and forth without locking it at a certain spot every time makes it useless on gimbals because that'll require you to re-balance it.
Not necessarily! Take a look at Novoflex Q-Mount II where you can clip and lock Arca-Swiss plates as easy as the RC2! However the Arca-Swiss system is far more used all over the tripod manufacturers! ;)
Don't you find the Manfrotto RC2 much faster compared to this? I have to jump into either RC2 or Arca but my main concern is speed, since I use many small tripods at night time on the go so actual quick release is important without much fiddling.
Used them since i photographing, L Plates are on every camera at home. For special needs, hejnar photo offers great solutions for manfrotto conversions, special plates and more ! Some Movcam Sony/Panasonic cages are also arca compatible.
I'm currently using Manfrotto qr plates and though about giving the Arca-Swiss plates a try. Thanks for the side by side comparison, greatly appreciated.
+Ron De Torres Just FYI - I'm newer to the game so I started with the newer Manfrotto stuff. I'm using a Manfrotto MV500AH head and the new plates have all the same features as the Arca Swiss shown (sans being skinny) plus they sit flat unlike the Arca Swiss. AND they take the old Manfrotto 501/701 style plates (although I don't think the old plates catch and could slide out if you don't tighten the thumb screw).
Neat push lock on the SunwayFoto system, but far more important when shopping is the location of the balance bubble. On the SunwayFoto, when you attach the camera, it covers the bubble. Contrast that with the Desmond with the bubble on one side and the clamp on the opposite. While it may not be quite as intuitive, when you attach the camera, the clamp (or screw tightner) needs to be under the lens so the bubble sticks out under your LCD screen on the camera. Most current SunwayFoto's have the have the bubble on the opposite end, but a few, like the one in this video, have it in the trackway to be covered by the camera when attached.
This quick release plate is convenient! The camera is attached to the tripod quickly and is very good! I also have four because it is convenient. The video was very interesting! I will come to play again. With love from Japan :)
After a long search I found them on ebay they have a different name but lock the same. www.ebay.de/itm/331975375874?_trksid=p2060353.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT
Your "Ending" totally, and absolutely, ruined my enjoyment. What a disaster! Don't know how I'll ever get over it! But seriously, very good, and thank you.
Here's an update to comments I made earlier. The SunwayFoto receiver is no longer sold through B&H. You have to go to Amazon. However, Amazon doesn't actually sell it either but they will connect you to another site that does...Asahido Japan. That added about a week to delivery even though we have Amazon Prime. The price was $98.91 per received. The Arca Swiss quick release plates do work with the SunwayFoto receiver, HOWEVER, the plates do NOT work with the Kessler receiver. It will not tighten on the plate so, it continues to slide back-and-forth. Kessler told me this is because Arca Swiss changed the "lip" on the bottom of the plate. So, we had to purchase Kessler plates. This is no big deal for us as we are using these plates and receivers for different cameras and set-ups. We don't have our Kessler plates yet so I can't say if they will work with the SunwayFoto receiver. I'm guessing it will because of the adjustability of the receiver. We see. I'll let y'all know. I can say I like the adjustability of the SunwayFoto receiver. Thank you Caleb for the info.
+DSLR Video Shooter yep, i think it orginates from most clamps being screw type, where it doesnt really matter, but lever ones have a small sizing where itll work. if you end up with one to big and need to fix it yourself i guess u could sand the base but that might take a long time
What mount is on neewer 2 in 1 70.8 inch or 75 inch 360 tripods?? Manfrotto or arca swiss? ...I like to attach neewer 15mm rail system with y bracket or the neewer l200 long lense holder support bracket to hold telephoto lenses. This with canon m50 camera with m mount ef speedbooster or ef efs. adapters
Caleb, are you still using the arca swiss plates? I am considering making the switch as some of the manfrotto plates are rubbing the lenses on my smaller cameras. Is there maybe a riser I could use or am do you still recommend moving to this system?
Far and away that small SunwayFoto was the best of the bunch in this very well presented tutorial. It had ALL the safety features required in the QR clamp assy except for an indent to prevent a plate from sliding out ( not all plates have the stops at each end ). The locking lever tab within the lever is a excellent design function as well as the adj. knob on the opposite side to snug up an odd width plate before locking down with the lever. I believe the other two clamps in this demo did not have these features, which in reality makes them useless in that when crossing a brook or stream or worse still, the ocean, ones' expensive camera gear cannot take a Swan Dive into oblivion... Bill @ WGF Studio53...
Kessler has been doing a sale the past two Christmas seasons for their quick release plate at $99 hopefully they continue this trend so I can pick up a few more!
Maybe you are still interested on this... I have found this chinese seller for Smallrig quick release base plate, you need to buy at least 5 m.alibaba.com/product/60596407314/SmallRig-1817-Best-Solid-Quick-Release.html?spm=a2706.7843667.1998817009.22.pvQ3I5
I think they do, but can you confirm that the Kessler Cranes Kwik quick release works well with Wooden Camera cages and a full bulldog rig? I had an issue where I had to return a tripod head due to quick release plate incompatibility. I didn't know there were all these different standards.
I have a Manfrotto XPRO3 Tripod with 498 Ballhead and the RC2 release system. I am going to buy the Tamron 150-600mm G2 lens and have trouble to feature out how I could attach it to the tripod... it's said the lens is arca swiss compatible. Looks like I need an arca swiss system? I don't want to change the system all the time, I'd like to have a quick release where I can attach both, my camera and the arca swiss compatible tele lens. I don't know about arca swiss products, can you give me a hint?
I visited the amazon page in your link but it appears SunwayFoto no longer makes the receiver unit (or "clamp" as they call it) with the locking arm, only the round knob. If this your understanding?
If you haven't figured it out, mount these clips to the plate, then just never remove the plate from the head, just remove the Arca plate. (it's a plate release mounted on a plate, essentially)
At 8:18 he demonstrated it for the larger plate, attaching the Manfrotto to the acra swiss plate, then the Manfrotto side fits into the Manfrotto head on the tripod. Leave it there permanently. Then the camera with the plate attached slides into the Arca Swiss on the tripod. If you have the smaller Manfrotto RC2 head, just attach the 200PL plate to the bottom of the Desmond or SunwayFoto size. Saved me a bundle of money not having to buy new heads, and of course I already had the 200PL part of the RC2 system.
Frustrating that some manufacturers claim that their products are "Arca-Swiss compatible" when they are, in fact, slightly larger or smaller than the "standard." Arca-Swiss, the company, would do itself a favor to police this. I am now considering moving to Manfrotto. Caleb, as you know, not all Arca-Swiss clamps have the adjustment screw that you mention in your video. The fact that it's required at all defeats the purpose of a "standard" and makes such mounts "slow release," not "quick release."
Anything but using arca swiss is silly unless you like spending more and complicating your life. I use a manfrotto element monopod but when I looked at a tilt head especially the quick release kind went for arca swiss so my camera would still clip to my backpack strap. If something comes with anything but arca swiss I simply don't buy it anymore. Reminds me of apple stuff , no having to jail break anything to use my equipment.
Could you do a video on how to attach the base plate to the tripod? I have a targas tripod and the head is not compatible with the arca swiss base plate. Are there tipods that are made compatible with this type of system?
I'm really glad you uploaded with an editing mistake and I got to see...drives home the idea that done is better than perfect and motivates me to just get stuff out there! Thanks a bunch for this one!!
Update on the SunwayFoto "Claimp" QR Plate Receiver... You can still get it but not directly from Amazon. Here's where: www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B00B28VT8G/ref=dp_olp_0?ie=UTF8&condition=all&qid=1518209617&sr=1-89
I've been trying to figure out how I can get to just using Arca swiss, since I do both video and stills work. (I sometimes use a peak design strap, which uses a small Arca swiss plate) The main issue I've had is finding a good stand-alone plate, to mount to things like a rig, or a Davis & Sanford head. So I really appreciate the links and subsequent reviews provided! Also I think you missed some cuts near the end: 9:55
Greetings, question on where to buy more plates. Has anyone else experienced problems with some of the plates not fitting in the heads/release? I have a PHQ1 and the plate seems just a bit too thin on the bottom to properly clamp in. These are some of the cheap plates from china (ebay) I admit. but perhaps someone knows a seller that makes em right?
very good info. is there a cheaper lighter-duty alternative to the "snap in" of the Kessler Cranes Kwik? Cullmann has snap-in&lever style products, but they are not arca swiss compatible sadly.
does someone have patent on these little quick release plates that shut the other makers down? all the sunway and desmond plates are no longer available and they have no more of this style in their line and it's the only reason I can think of
Will you recommend a ball head for my tripod (velbon videomate II). To shoot posed images of one to several contestants indoors. My main concern is moving from Portrait to Landscape quickly, keeping cam level. All other options are relatively unimportant. The ball head will remain on this tripod specifically for this use. I use a d7200 with 24-70mm lens so total weight about 4 lbs. Thank you.
if it won't sit flat on the table just carry a fat cheese plate with you, there's got to be two holes that fit those two pins somewhere. toss the cheese plate down and set your rig on it.
Hey Caleb , I really need your help. I’m building a rig ( based off your videos) customized for shooting cinematic videos with a Canon 80D. I’m using a “Smallrig” camera cage. Now I would like to be able to connect my rig to a tripod, without removing my camera from its cage. I’m having trouble figuring out what dual rail system I can buy to connect to a tripod ? I’m sorry if I’m not using the correct verbiage or technical terminology
How do you switch the quick releases on your tripod/monopods? Are you just mounting the Arca Swiss receiving plates directly on whatever head came with the tripod (thereby adding to the height of the set-up)? Or are you removing something and then replacing it with the receiving plate? Thanks for the video, Caleb.
I want to buy a Vanguard Alta Pro 2+ 263 AP and maybe use it with my Zhiyun Crane 2, will they share the quick release plate system, and if not, what can I do to to make the tripod compatible with the Manfrotto 502 type plates?
I honestly prefer the 200PL plates from Manfrotto. I can pop them in with just one hand and its already locked tight. You don't have that with the Arca Swiss plates
Hi Caleb, Just checking, do these plate adaptors have anything protruding underneath that would prevent them mounting flat onto existing 501PL plates and heads?
Guys, can anybody help me? I have arca - compatible system on my gitzo head but my DSLR always keep rotating on QR plate when shooting vertincal. I tryed to screw it really hard but it didnt help. Any tips how to prevent it or which QR plate to buy? I have D7100
First, try tightening the plate using this trick: dslrvideoshooter.com/how-to-use-a-quick-release-plate-without-tools/ Next, if that doesn't work try adding some electrical tape to either side of the 1/4" bolt that attaches to your camera You might need a few layers. Also, the 1/4" bolt you're using might be too long and isn't tightening the plate to the camera enough.
Yea, but if you have something like a Miller tripod/head you are stuck with their plates, which are really expensive. Arca plates don't fit into the Miller groove. Dang!
I have 2 Manfrotto tripods, Bogen 3221 and the 3063, i love the tripods but i hate the Hex Quick release plates because they block the dslr battery door and you have to remove the plate to change the battery. Does anyone have a suggestion besides buying new tripod heads?
Hi, thanks for the tip. I have a vanguard tripod with a BH-200 head also vanguard and I would like to convert it to arca-swiss. Can you advice on that? What is the best convert kit and how many parts I will replace? thanks
This year I went the opposite direction and started using the Manfrotto 323 quick change plate system. I find it is much faster to go from a tripod to a slider to whatever than using a Arca Swiss style plate. ruclips.net/video/A0yvhVHRaQ8/видео.html The issue I have with the Arca Swiss is repeatable settings. With the 323, every time you lock the camera in place it is in the same position as last time you locked it in place. With Arca Swiss the camera's position almost always moves as you slide the plate back and forth.
What tripods does it work with? Is it matches all of them universally? If it dose not, what to look for in advance to check if it will match my tripod?
+Mesh Frequency These (especially the kessler model) will work with almost all tripods. I can't make any promises but they have worked with all of mine.
Manfrotto makes many great product and their value is very good. But proprietary plates is a joke. I ended up with non-manfrotto geared head just because I'm not giving up my other tripod/head systems as well as L-brackets. I will not put up with plate switching either. Already too many headache.
@@Diggnuts Well, you get what you pay for. Arca Swiss, Cambo and Linhof cameras and accessories are precision equipment. Hence the price. I have kept my Manfrotto gear, but only as extras if needed. There's no going back.
@@kevin-parratt-artist Even my el cheapo Arca Swiss adapters are just fine. Mostly because the original design was simple and elegant. It is hard to screw up. I have even made one from scratch for a project. The only Manfrotto head I have.. broke. So there is that.
Are you buying lots of music from premiumbeat recently or have you had it lying around from other projects already anyway (since PB lets you reuse songs as much as you want)?
Sorry but I don’t get the advantage of the Arca Swiss style plates unless you need finer adjustments. They aren’t quick release unlike the RC2. You can just whack something onto one with one hand rather than fiddle with thumbscrews.
i'm a bit confused because I'm on the market to buy a bunch of "things" for my camera(s) and want to be as hasslefree as possible. I do mostly street/urban/rural photography, but I'm also interested in shooting indoor (to do reviews/demo) and also a little bit outdoor. I bought a benro tripod with tiltable center arm and a slide lite by peak design that comes with an arca swiss standard plate. I now have to buy a video fluid head (I already have a cheap ball head that has a screw knob that I use on my gorillapod, but it's a bit annoying have to screw back and forth), but I don't know what to search for, nor have an idea of how I can mix things up (maybe putting a plate on another plate or... @_@). can you suggest me a way of having to deal only with that standard plate fixed on the bottom of the camera and can switch back and forth between photo and video head... also, if you can suggest me a budget fluid video head that do it's job without breaking the bank, it's really appreciated. Keep doing good videos, I'm subscribed!
Hey Paolo! I would be an Arca Swiss clamp (like this one: amzn.to/2f3WIax) between the tripod sticks and the tripod heads. Next, add one of these plates: amzn.to/2fZdQQV to the bottom of each tripod head. Now you can quacking swap out video and photo heads instantly!
I moved to Arca Swiss because of the quick release plate my gimbal uses is Arca Swiss compatible. I want to have an unified system so that I can move camera quickly between tripod and gimbal. Gotta tell ya once I started using it I am not looking back. I am putting all my Manfrotto mounts and plates on Craigslist soon.
Looks like you missed an edit at the end there. Thanks for posting this, I've been curious about Arca Swiss for a while but never got around to researching it for myself.
I'm not sure if it is a brand but it's definitely a standard for camera mounting systems. There are manufacturers that create their quick release systems based in the Arca Swiss standard.
Arca Swiss is a great plate in most instances and I use them a lot. but don't throw out the use of a 501 or 701 plate yet... the Arca Swiss is made for lighter gear, and the 501/701 plates are made for heavier gear. Thank you as I have Nikon D500 and a 200-500 lens and was wonder if these can hold the weight of my gear.
A lot of my pro photog friends went to Arca Swiss ages ago. I’m finally making the move. I’ve been a Manfrotto user since I got my first tripod.
It was nice to show and compare different receiving plates, and also to put their references in the video description. Thanks !
Great Video!! I just got my first Manfrotto head and thought viewers who historically use Manfrotto plates might like to know this:

(I sometimes use a peak design strap, which uses a small Arca swiss plate) The main issue I've had is finding a good stand-alone plate, to mount to things like a rig, or a Davis & Sanford head. So I really appreciate the links and subsequent reviews provided! Also I think you missed some cuts near the end: 9:55
+Zachary's Studio i get plates off ebay, but u may need to wade through the results to find the size you need
+paul menard I actually think the first plate Caleb showed will be perfect for me, much quicker than what I have, and it lies flat.
+paul menard I meant the bottom plates, I have a couple peak design top plates, and those are plenty for me.
+Zachary's Studio theres a nice round gariz one,
+Zachary's Studio Thanks Zach! Glad you enjoyed it! And yeah, big fail at the end.
Thanks for the info Caleb!
Can you update your links? Thanks
Soo,,,is the arca swiss the slidey one??
Hey Caleb ,
I really need your help.
Also, just found out the Desmond receiver is no longer available from B&H.
+Steve Williams I just slap a new receiving plates on all my heads.
Are you still using Arca Swiss setups in June of 2020? Any thoughts or recommendations? Thanks
-Will
Any idea where you can get the DLVC-50 these days? Everyone seems to have sold out.
Will all these mount flush on the manfrotto 501 plate?
Visiting this video in late 2018... Would you recommend r32 /323 plates over arca swiss?
I want to buy a Vanguard Alta Pro 2+ 263 AP and maybe use it with my Zhiyun Crane 2, will they share the quick release plate system, and if not, what can I do to to make the tripod compatible with the Manfrotto 502 type plates?
I honestly prefer the 200PL plates from Manfrotto. I can pop them in with just one hand and its already locked tight. You don't have that with the Arca Swiss plates
pgytech solved it
Hi Caleb, Just checking, do these plate adaptors have anything protruding underneath that would prevent them mounting flat onto existing 501PL plates and heads?
Is this still the way to go in 2021? If not what would you get?
Go with Arca Swiss.
What happened at the end ! ?
Where is part 2 ! ?
Guys, can anybody help me? I have arca - compatible system on my gitzo head but my DSLR always keep rotating on QR plate when shooting vertincal. I tryed to screw it really hard but it didnt help. Any tips how to prevent it or which QR plate to buy? I have D7100
First, try tightening the plate using this trick:
dslrvideoshooter.com/how-to-use-a-quick-release-plate-without-tools/
Next, if that doesn't work try adding some electrical tape to either side of the 1/4" bolt that attaches to your camera You might need a few layers. Also, the 1/4" bolt you're using might be too long and isn't tightening the plate to the camera enough.
3:55 seem u need a magnetic plate for sitting flat easy fix :)
Yea, but if you have something like a Miller tripod/head you are stuck with their plates, which are really expensive. Arca plates don't fit into the Miller groove. Dang!
Any Arca Swiss video head recommendations for a 15mm rail system?
Hey Caleb, smallrig just released a drop in manfrotto base plate. You should check it out!
Are there any fluid heads that use an arca swiss plate? or are you putting an arca swiss clamp on a manfrotto plate for your video head?
+Chris Maybe I'm sure they are out there. I thought Zacuto was working on one but it'll probably be wicked expensive.
I would also suggest sirui va-5 compact video head ;)
I have 2 Manfrotto tripods, Bogen 3221 and the 3063, i love the tripods but i hate the Hex Quick release plates because they block the dslr battery door and you have to remove the plate to change the battery. Does anyone have a suggestion besides buying new tripod heads?
On many Manfrotto heads you can change just the plate-holder-part to a arca type plate-holder-part.
Hi, thanks for the tip. I have a vanguard tripod with a BH-200 head also vanguard and I would like to convert it to arca-swiss. Can you advice on that? What is the best convert kit and how many parts I will replace? thanks
+Paulo Pereira Just get one of the items linked to above and attach it to your current tripod plate. Should work!
Just curious if you're going to link to what you were going to say at the end? Now enquiring minds want to know. =>
+Klutzo It was just a sign off. Nothing special :-)
This year I went the opposite direction and started using the Manfrotto 323 quick change plate system. I find it is much faster to go from a tripod to a slider to whatever than using a Arca Swiss style plate. ruclips.net/video/A0yvhVHRaQ8/видео.html
The issue I have with the Arca Swiss is repeatable settings. With the 323, every time you lock the camera in place it is in the same position as last time you locked it in place. With Arca Swiss the camera's position almost always moves as you slide the plate back and forth.
Narrow plates are not better just of because of the battery.
What about the camera without batteries?
Nice video. Hopefully by now you've switched to a non-linear editor that doesn't affect the original clips.
What tripods does it work with? Is it matches all of them universally? If it dose not, what to look for in advance to check if it will match my tripod?
+Mesh Frequency These (especially the kessler model) will work with almost all tripods. I can't make any promises but they have worked with all of mine.
Is it just me, or are all of those clamps not available anymore?... 🤔
Do you still use arca swiss plates ?
Manfrotto makes many great product and their value is very good. But proprietary plates is a joke. I ended up with non-manfrotto geared head just because I'm not giving up my other tripod/head systems as well as L-brackets. I will not put up with plate switching either. Already too many headache.
Why not just use an Arca Swiss original, in stead of those others?
Price!
What's with the end of this video? 😆🙏
There is the plate and the mount. The quick release is a whole ststemm.
Please do a review about Walimex pro universal frame when you have time! I saw you have one in this video! Thank you.
+楊貽茜 Working on that :-)
Are you buying lots of music from premiumbeat recently or have you had it lying around from other projects already anyway (since PB lets you reuse songs as much as you want)?
+Tobi Dnz I've been working with them on special licensing for my channel.
Is the lever plate compatible with RRS 55 heads?
Doesn't look like they make your favorite Sunwayfoto mount anymore :(
I moved to Arca Swiss because of the quick release plate my gimbal uses is Arca Swiss compatible.
+Ken Tanis Thanks for the heads up. Massive fail lol.
Great review! Thanks!
The screws come out with an Allen wrench
Hi guys.. Is arca swiss a brand? Sorry im new
I'm not sure if it is a brand but it's definitely a standard for camera mounting systems. There are manufacturers that create their quick release systems based in the Arca Swiss standard.
