I think low skill floor in this case was meant in the sense of easy to understand. Tracer's abilities are easy to understand: The go fast button and the go back button. Anyone can look at that and grasp what they should be doing. Doing it effectively however, is the part that's hard to master.
@@dovahkat9635 I understand that but that's like if I used the phrase “Give a man an inch and he'll take a mile.” to mean the named man was not greedy.
@@familydesjardinsin this case low skill floor is appropriate to use as mentioned above already, Tracers abilities are easy to understand and use (ineffectively), however theres tons of room for improvement and effectiveness so it also has a high skill ceilimg
I've heard Low Skill Floor be defined as more difficult since you start lower down. I'm not entierly sure which definition is correct anymore but Low being Easy means the terms stay consistent between Floor and Celling.
A real-world scout is defined by caution. Your job is to move ahead of everyone else to see what the enemy is up to, and in practice that means you're going blindly into an area likely to be dense with enemies, with equipment and numbers that are nowhere near enough to survive a firefight if you get caught. Speed, stealth, and smarts are all you have.
I liked that this was not only just a fun video talking about a specific video game archetype and it’s many variations, but also ended off with a REALLY important life lesson. I cannot emphasize enough how important it is to slow down.
some things you missed: 1. DRG's Scout has the only movement tool that lets you go faster unconditionally Driller's Drills have more optimised pathing, but don't work as well when going upwards Gunner's Zipline is slow by design, used as a defensive tool Engineer's platforms don't give any speed, just allow more speed by reducing fall damage if you land on them 2. Scout's Boomstick overclock easily makes him the fastest of the 3, especially when you remember that he can mitigate fall damage no matter how high up you go and without any prior setup using the grapple hook
Absolutely incredible video! I love the way everything was presented and with each video mentioning DRG, my desire to get it increases. Might go try it once I have time.
Deed rocks galactic scout can go even faster with the special powder OC for the boomstick and can get additional movement options with the hoverclock OC for the m1000 as well as the hover boots active perk
@@sorin_markov I meant after they changed it. The role passive used to be that all dps heroes moved like 10% faster or something but after they changed it I think they gave the speed boost back to tracer and genji Edit: the current role passive is that they reload faster after getting a kill
I didn't expect this video to be a philosophical treatise on the nature of speed and our relationship with time, but I think I needed it to be. It imparted a message I didn't know I needed today until I heard it. Thank you for sharing.
I like that DRG still has a way to make the scout seem less tanky, despite him having the same health as everyone else. He is not as well equipped for dealing with large groups of enemies. While he does have several weapons to help with that, he has a harder time, and often takes more damage to swarms than the other classes. This is a good way to make him feel more at risk than the others, while also making him no less effective against single targets.
@@kheasboroki3928 Most damage that you will be taking in combat isn't any of those damage types but you are right and it does make some difference, especially against exploders.
I very much agree, but when you stop taking damage from those sources altogether you'd be surprised to realise how often they tick away your armor or health (walking on burning ground in Magma core or close to meteors, the poison spit from praetorians and the gas mushrooms in the fungus bog, for example). However stats showed that the most damage player take IS fall damage so i very much get your point.@@iwillslapyou4982
@@iwillslapyou4982explosive damage is actually VERY common in DRG, mactera shots, exploders/bulks, dread fireballs, plant life, stray drillers... And as a result of his low movement capabilities and reduced move speed while shooting gives him more survivability.
For scouts numbers did you use the crit calculations in there? The scattergun is essentially just a better shot gun with max ramp up of 105 which 2 shots any class except heavy.
Idk if you need this anymore but he said in 2 shots, yes max ramp up for 1 is 105 not including minicrits or crits, but 2 shots is 210. Idk where 220 came in but sometimes Valve calcs get weird
The key characteristic of a scout is the ability to, well, scout - not speed. Vision range and detection and such. The TF2 Scout isn't really a scout, he's more of a speedster. Light cavalry, shock trooper, raider.
I appreciate the tie-in to reality at the end. It definitely raises the quality of this video even further, especially because of how naturally you transitioned into it, and how it wasn't pretending to be grandiose. Thanks :)
Super cool video! I've been telling my DRG buddies that Scout isn't just the 'go fast' dwarf, and this video summed that up (and timing & speed in general) sooo well! ❤
came for the scouts subbed for the life lesson at the end like eyo i didn't expect that but ill say having adhd thats very accurate. with adhd you cannot brute force and speed through things by just forcing yourself to focus. we have hyper focus but its more tunnel vision to be accurate. its important to stop and think about how i do things before i do things
I don't think Rein is the best analogue, Zarya probably fits better. Focus on close range, high damage output, increasing your teammates' survivability, and temporary survivability boosts to yourself while not being meant to face tank damage most of the time.
I think low skill floor is correct - that means the lowest skill player will perform very bad. A high skill floor would imply that the lowest skill player is still relatively good. That’s based on the use of high skill ceiling meaning there’s lots of room to grow and improve to master the character and perform extremely well, and a low skill ceiling would mean that even if you’re number 1 in the world you wouldn’t perform as well with that character as someone with similar skill playing a better character with a higher ceiling. The floors and ceilings are limiting factors on both ends (as far as I’ve ever understood it anyway. Maybe I’m wrong)
@@mackenzieb6397 i think you're confused. Skill floor is the required skill to be effective at the character. Skill ceiling is the required skill to master the character. Lets take lucio for example, he has a low skill floor because even new players running lucio will still provide heals and speed buff. But he has a high skill ceiling because mastery of wallride to get to points faster, access flanks, and take care of enemy supports is difficult but very effective. Genji on the other hand has a high skill floor, new players trying out genji most likely get caught in the open without doing much.

Quick minor correction: At 9:50, saying Tracer's difficult with a "low skill floor" is contradictory to your point. Low skill floor means the base skill required to be competent is low. Tracer has a high skill floor, which is to say you already need to be skilled to play her effectively. By comparison, speaking as a TF2 Engineer player, Engineer has a comparatively low skill floor; just hit your sentry with your wrench and let it play the game for you. Anyway, awesome video.
One of the best new additions to the DRG scout is the stunning boomerang option (in place of a grenade). Since the scout's grappling hook isnt super far reaching, a scout can rush around a corner, stunn all the enemies, and then run while his team mates take care of the bugs, making the other dwarves' lives easier. AND HE CAN DO THIS 8 TIMES BEFORE RESUPPLYING.

A bit of a more obscure example, but I think another great one would be most light mechs in the BattleTech/MechWarrior series of games, especially in MechWarrior Online. Granted not many light mechs are the fastest in MWO, but my favorite is the Flea(either FLE-17 or FLE-20). It’s a fast mech that’s real small and hard to hit, and with the addition of MASC it can boost its speed even higher than before, allowing it to pick off stragglers or assault mechs that are on the very far back line. That and the sheer speed a maxed out XL engine allows it to be a powerful BattleMech. Even if you don’t kill anyone, having enough disruption to pull even a quarter of an assault force to give your heavier units time to move in and pick everyone off while they’re trying to get the asshole Flea running around and poking people and running off. Even if you die, the amount of disruption and damage you can offer is more than enough to turn the tide of a game(assuming everyone is on the same page and is communicating).
i watched this video and your engineer video - now i know i’ll like your work so i’m gonna subscribe!! can’t wait to watch all your old videos and see new ones when they come out. so glad i found this channel!

Excellent think piece, especially your ending summary. The something new I tried today was this video and I'm glad it was
This comment made my soul happy, I'm glad I could do that for you :D
"In DRG, you fight ai controlled enemies and the environment"
The driller: *Smiles menacingly*
The scout: _whimpers_
This is the perfect kind of content: great video, fun animations, with just enough jokes sprinkled in to keep it upbeat and not too serious.
“Keep at it kid, someday you’ll go far” -Some grandad somewhere
This is incredible! I’ve never heard your name before you came into my recommended and was shocked to see you had only ~20k subs!! I loved your editing style, as a film student I’d love to see a peak behind the curtain!
Thank you friend! If you want to talk more about video making, feel free to join the Discord (check video description) or check out the podcast I do every Sunday :) it'll hell give some insight into who I am and how I work :D
the points you're evoking about the scout from drg are accurate, but most of the time we're all chill and sometimes we take it slow to find some hidden objects here and there (comp gold, bittergems, beer mats)
its a great game overall with lovely devs, don't hesitate to buy it, for the price is worth it ^^
FOR KARL
Rock and stone, brother
did not expect that tangent about life at the end.
Maybe the real scout is the friends we made along the way.
Low skill floor means easy to play, you mean to say that tracer has a high skill floor.
@@dovahkat9635W bahamut user
@@familydesjardinsin this case low skill floor is appropriate to use as mentioned above already, Tracers abilities are easy to understand and use (ineffectively), however theres tons of room for improvement and effectiveness so it also has a high skill ceilimg
I've heard Low Skill Floor be defined as more difficult since you start lower down.
I'm not entierly sure which definition is correct anymore but Low being Easy means the terms stay consistent between Floor and Celling.
End of the video hit like a truck. Masterfully crafted. Never saw it coming.
4:29 was not expecting to scout to talk
some things you missed:
1. DRG's Scout has the only movement tool that lets you go faster unconditionally
Driller's Drills have more optimised pathing, but don't work as well when going upwards
Gunner's Zipline is slow by design, used as a defensive tool
Engineer's platforms don't give any speed, just allow more speed by reducing fall damage if you land on them
2. Scout's Boomstick overclock easily makes him the fastest of the 3, especially when you remember that he can mitigate fall damage no matter how high up you go and without any prior setup using the grapple hook
the strongest ability in gaming is to choose your opponent, and that is what scouts are best at
Absolutely incredible video! I love the way everything was presented and with each video mentioning DRG, my desire to get it increases. Might go try it once I have time.
Absolutely recommend. Great devs, great community, great game.
Deed rocks galactic scout can go even faster with the special powder OC for the boomstick and can get additional movement options with the hoverclock OC for the m1000 as well as the hover boots active perk

Never thought a video about “speedy video game boi” would have me questioning my existence but here we are.
This is my life.
Damn I gotta compliment the writing on this video. Really hope I see more essays like this soon!
This whole video is just a message for us to take it easy instead of speeding through everything efficiently all the damn time.
Fun fact:
Tracer and Genji walk ~9% faster than other heroes
Not anymore. That got removed in OW2
@@sorin_markov I think it got added back when they removed the dps role passive
@@Inveestigator There's still a DPS role passive though ?
@@sorin_markov I meant after they changed it.
The role passive used to be that all dps heroes moved like 10% faster or something but after they changed it I think they gave the speed boost back to tracer and genji
Edit: the current role passive is that they reload faster after getting a kill
The woman in the beginning is AI, just like Jeremy (TF2 Scout)'s voice
I didn't expect this video to be a philosophical treatise on the nature of speed and our relationship with time, but I think I needed it to be. It imparted a message I didn't know I needed today until I heard it. Thank you for sharing.
I like that DRG still has a way to make the scout seem less tanky, despite him having the same health as everyone else. He is not as well equipped for dealing with large groups of enemies. While he does have several weapons to help with that, he has a harder time, and often takes more damage to swarms than the other classes. This is a good way to make him feel more at risk than the others, while also making him no less effective against single targets.
there is also the fact his armor upgrade gives him fall damage resistance, rather than resistance against fire, poison, or explosions like the others
I hate when people ignore a deeper message in videos like this keep working hard whether you see it or not its already paying off
Hell nah, this is really a video to be proud of. That beginning is PACKED with hype! Good job!
For scouts numbers did you use the crit calculations in there? The scattergun is essentially just a better shot gun with max ramp up of 105 which 2 shots any class except heavy.
battallions soldier
Idk if you need this anymore but he said in 2 shots, yes max ramp up for 1 is 105 not including minicrits or crits, but 2 shots is 210. Idk where 220 came in but sometimes Valve calcs get weird
This editing is incredible, so enjoyable and it reminds me so much of kill bill's o'ren section
The key characteristic of a scout is the ability to, well, scout - not speed. Vision range and detection and such. The TF2 Scout isn't really a scout, he's more of a speedster. Light cavalry, shock trooper, raider.
Yeah, he is more of a light, shock cavalry raider.
I'll take shock trooper and run away thank you very much.
I appreciate the tie-in to reality at the end. It definitely raises the quality of this video even further, especially because of how naturally you transitioned into it, and how it wasn't pretending to be grandiose. Thanks :)
love your vids man
Super cool video! I've been telling my DRG buddies that Scout isn't just the 'go fast' dwarf, and this video summed that up (and timing & speed in general) sooo well! ❤
As an OW and TF2 player, you kinda made me wanna play that third game.
Deep Rock Galactic is an awesome co-op game (one of, if not, the best co-op FPS), and is often on sale. Very much worth playing!

I really enjoyed this video and the editing! Also love seeing recognition for OW and DRG in the same video, both of which I've played a lot of.
came for the scouts subbed for the life lesson at the end like eyo i didn't expect that but ill say having adhd thats very accurate.
with adhd you cannot brute force and speed through things by just forcing yourself to focus. we have hyper focus but its more tunnel vision to be accurate.
its important to stop and think about how i do things before i do things
Since you already did a video on the engis and torbjorn, I would love to also see one about heavy, gunner and maybe reinhardt(?)
I don't think Rein is the best analogue, Zarya probably fits better. Focus on close range, high damage output, increasing your teammates' survivability, and temporary survivability boosts to yourself while not being meant to face tank damage most of the time.
And how about engineer, engineer and bastion ? (the bit where they decide where to sit down)
@@noodledoodle9408he already did a vid on the engis. Torbjorn instead of bastion

This editing is amazing man!
10:11 I think you meant to say "high skill floor" not "low skill floor" The latter implies it's very easy to play tracer.
Thank you for that correction Jay! You are correct, I don't know how I messed that up. I appreciate it :)
Genji on the other hand has a high skill floor, new players trying out genji most likely get caught in the open without doing much.
i wanna note theirs an in lore reason why scout (tf2) has 2x capture rate, hes got 2 hearts, mind you, the second heart beaing that of a dove that the medic accidently put in him
New sub. Excellent video, good pacing, nice transitions, clear points, a life lesson, and excellent music selection. You said at the beginning you were proud and you should be. Great job my dude
TF2 Scout is Operationally fast
OW/2 Tracer is Tactically fast
DW Scout is Strategically fast
More time really means more time to rest
man, was not expecting the gut punch of a very specific personal issue at the end, great video
I was not expecting a therapy session form this exposé on scout mechanics, but I can't say I didn't need it.
This video was awesome! I now know I love the "scout" characters i used to play a lot of scout back in 2012, and picked tracer up pretty quickly when overwatch released
Wonderful video!
Thank you for adding a life lesson to this nice video about game characters!

Overwatch
Paladins
But deep rock? Thats a pve not pvp

@@zagrfige i even expect neon from Valorant

@@sebastiancristaldo6868 I don't know anything about valorant but I'd assume it just doesn't have the same playstyle to use as a "scout" that's possible in the games he showed. Also yeah, gotta love OW making a new game, calling it free, then charging a fortune for the thing they made the game for lol.
@@zagrfige Nah they straight-up scrapped the thing that necessitated a sequel to begin with. PvE mode is never happening, and they only revealed that after a bunch of people fell for their bull.
If it was unclear, I was referring to Overwatch, not DRG.

That moral at the end rings quite true. Never underestimate a good break when you have schoolwork due in not too long. It can improve its quality.
Pathfinder from Apex also is a similar scout to DRG scout. Personal mobility and team utility. Only problem is his hitbox is fucking massive
As a student for game design, this video was so good. I’ve never thought about the speed management aspect of scouts and realized how much i abuse it and it gets me killed while playing tracer or doomfist. G O S L O W.
I clicked thinking it was a video about Smash, but stayed for the great video about TF2 and OW
"able to get to parts of the map no other class can with his double jump"
may i introduce: detonator, thermal thruster, every soldier primary and most demo secondaries, demoknight crimping
What I find interesting is that, slowing down and analyzing the situation is exactly what you see jermey doing in meet the scout
The scout is probably a better scout player than most
Your choice to use Sonic Adventure OST for the background is one hell of a choice. Love it.
Hey Lucid! This concept is so simple yet so profound! Thank you for making this video!!

@@LucidMakesVideos Lmao no worries! First video of yours I've watched. Good stuff, keep it up!
Never thought a video about scout will get this deep towards the end
In games it’s easy to get to the others side of the map but it’s extremely hard to get back
A bit of a more obscure example, but I think another great one would be most light mechs in the BattleTech/MechWarrior series of games, especially in MechWarrior Online.
"A man who cannot see cannot fight"

Never thought I’d see a Lecrae song featured on my recommended page. Great video. Very well produced!
Damn that was really well made the ending was by far my favorite part:)
The Scout from DRG is basically Tracer mixed with Widowmaker, think about it. He's fast, he has double smgs, and can manipulate time like Tracer. But he also has a sniper and a grappling hook like Widowmaker.
