If you have any question about the Huawei's camera app/settings, feel free to post a message and I'll try to answer your question. And sorry about the bad audio in this video! There was some low frequency hum in the room i did the opening talk, and then my external audio recorder captured a lot of noise during the main video so I have to revert back to the phone's internal audio.
Is there any mode that can be compared with moving photos in Samsung Note 8 (that allows you to record a small video of what happen in the scene 3 seconds before the photos, allowing you to save the best images you have capture)
yes. The circle/sun like icon at the top (or right in this video) of the screen allows you to capture a short moving picture with the static photo. But i don't think you can save the best frame from the moving photo.
The perfect engineering explanation, almost nothing fancy, just raw, detailed and logical explanations that kept me watching the whole 20mins. Helped me a ton, thanks!
PERFECT VIDEO, I'm a padawan, and i understand all things that you say about technical terms of photography! Thanks a lot! I have to practice right now!
Just got the P20 Pro and I am a keen photographer, your vlog has allowed me to totally understand the camera functions - excellent tutorial - Thank You
Finally a decent explanation of the settings for a camera, this is extremely useful, not just for p20 users but for anyone with a camera that has these settings. Thank you very much Mr. Wong.
Thank you. I might do an updated version of this video in the future as there are quite a few new changes to the UI and features I want to talk about that was not available when I originally did this video. Thanks and enjoy your p30 pro!
Hi there I have a p10.. Subie question.. When i take portrait photos my camare flips it to landscape and other times to portrait. I am still holding my phone the same way. Why does it do that?
Thank you so much for this information, needed this to show me on my P20 Pro, now I'm comfortable & confident with the camera. Very valuable. Well done.
After this video i knew my phone can do alot with pro mode . Having huawei honor play and by doing iso to 50 and shutter to 20 using tripod the pictures went awesome 👍👍👍👍👍
Thank You Very Much for your excellent crash course on HUAWEI photography . It's has really helped me understand the settings on my Huawei Mate 10 pro. Keep up the good work.
I've been scouring for a vid for tutorial on how to use the spectacularly underrated cameras of huawei phones. This video did me good. Thanks. I have p10 and upgraded to P30, but since I havenvt really used the "Pro" mode of the 2 phones . I'm a beginner in mobile photography
Glad you like the video and found it useful. I will also be doing an updated version of this video later this year! There are a few new changes and features so would love to talk about and explain them in the new video
Try to press and hold the finger on the screen. then you can focus on one point in the picture, and adjust the light from another point. very usefull :)
In pro mode you can tap and hold on the EV, focus mode (AF-C etc.), and white balance buttons to lock them. These settings only stay locked for one picture which is a bit inconvenient but it can sometimes be useful when you want to do some quick tweaking :)
Excellent video, things very well explained, thanks Richard! The one query I would love to have answered is, when I put my Huawei into Pro Mode and take RAW pics, it not only takes those but also a Jpeg image. Can I tell the camera in those instances to only take RAW, without the accompanying Jpeg?
Just bought huyawei and wanted to find some tutorials for camera usage. Great work. I would have only be glad if you showed more about light painting. I have to try it by myself so I hope I will be able to use all benefits. Veronika
Great explaination! I'm thinking of getting the P20 for the lower price. I'm particularly interested in taking low light/night photos like lit buildings or city streets at night and play with light and shadows. Heard the p20 pro is known to overexpose in those situations and that colors are much warmer, not as "realistic" as the p20. Is that true? And even so, can you adjust it in the pro mode? I would get the pro instead if It makes a difference in low light. Thank you.
Hello hello kitty!! Nice nickname! If you can afford, definitely get the p20 pro as the camera is much better. I haven't done any side by side test with p20 Vs p20 pro, but the pro should be better in every area in term of photos and yes you can change the warmingness (is it a word?) In pro mode
@@TheRealRichardWong Thank you! And thanks a lot for the quick answer. I based the question on a review on yt since he talks about shadows and exposure. ruclips.net/video/nYI19AzFvJc/видео.html. I wouldn't mind playing wit the setting before taking a pic if these problems can be fixed, dk if it's really the cameras fault or the slightly dif angle or sth else and plus what improvements software updates can bring. Also do you take the pics in RAW?
I just watched that video, to be honest I think the difference in auto exposure and white balance is really small and would most likely be different if you shoot different kind of photos. And you can also override most of this easily in pro mode if you want. Trust me, The camera on the p20 pro is much better.
And most of the time I just take photo in auto/jpg mode. Only when I see something I want to capture the best quality I would shoot in pro mode output in raw
+Richard Wong Very nice video. Well done. Just my thoughts on focus lock vs exposure lock..... At 8:00 you are talking about exposure, however I believe what you are actually doing is locking the focus AND exposure on a certain object. First you lock focus on an object (by touching and holding for 1 sec on the P20 screen), then drag the centre icon of the sun to achieve desired exposure. The outer ring is for focus BTW. Those who understand DSLR's will be familiar with the above. Another small opinion that may help those on a budget.... the Mate 9 is a very very solid phone and in some respects better than the P20Pro.... camera is also beautiful. I only upgraded as I accidentally (severely) dropped my Mate9, otherwise a whole year later, it performed like it did out of the box.
Nice one, Richard, that was very helpful. A lot of things nicely explained there that I otherwise wouldn't have known about. I love that shutter speed option in the pro mode! Thank you!
Hi Luke you will need a tripod, set to pro mode, set shutter time to around 15s, iso 1600 .. then use timer or a headphone to remote trigger so you get no camera shake. Remember you need a night with clear sky and no moon as well.
I love this tutorial..Helps a Lot!! Do u also have some tutorials on how to take photos in fruits,foods..and also on how to use the light painting mode like silky water, star trails..thank you ..😘😘 P30 Pro user here..

8:56 I have a P20 and the 3d lighting settings in portrait mode do not appear , sometimes i just wish i hadnt updated my phone when i bought it.. it appears with aupdates some options go away, im somehow dissapointent
Yes I notice Huawei like to change / tweak / add and remove features as they push new firmware updates. But overall the new firmware works quite a bit better so worth the upgrade if you ask me
Hi Richard, bought P20 Pro recently because of your awesome review. For an amateur photographer, not much with the pro setting as of the moment as it confuses me for now and maybe many more experiments to do. But do you suggest or often use smooth mode or Master AI mode? Smooth mode is not allowed when using Master AI mode.
jmca18, if Pro mode is a bit confusing, then just shoot in normal "Photo" mode with master AI on. There are many ways to enjoy and learn photography. I think shoot in auto mode isn't a bad idea because you can focus on learning the composition, lighting..etc and worry about the more technical things later. Oh what is the "smooth mode" you are talking about?
Sorry it was smooth color from your video. I believe vivid colors have more contrast and makes the picture more darker compared to standard color. It's master AI mode vs smooth color from what you chose in the video. Which is best?
It's more a personal preference. AI mode colour is usually more saturated while smooth is slightly less saturated. Having said that, Master AI is more than just colour adjustment. It does a lot more like automatically switch to portrait mode, document scanning mode, night mode..etc depends on the scene you are shooting. So I would rely on Master AI and if the result doesn't look what I want, then switch it off for that particular photo
Yes agree it is more of a personal preference. I have switched the Master AI on already. But I think I prefer the standard colour than the smooth colour. Vivid is very strong in color and darkens the picture. Thank you for your help Richard. Appreciate it.
@@elmerjosephyap4806 Portrait mode is pretty much all automatic, so it's easy to use and result is nice. But aperture mode you have more control in terms of background blur, and you can control it after you took the photo. Each has it's own pros and cons
Yes, sorry it was tucked away in more. I was expecting it to be a little button on the screen somewhere. I'm liking the camera although super slo mo is difficult to work with and wish it could be a little simpler somehow. As for comments about compatibility in Final cut pro, I've had no problems with importing video as I chose H264 instead of 5. Will try 5 at some point soon as I'm sure it'll become the norm.
yes the H264 is more supported format at the moment but give it a bit of time, the software will catch up and supports it. It's good to have option anyway isn't it?
Very useful information! Never had a Huawei before. Some of the features I didn't even know existed. I think I understand my P20 Pro much better now and will capture much better photos from now on! Thank you!
Thank you for the so much details on the Camera of P20 Pro. Can you talk about memory storage of P20 Pro. my is only 128gb, how can i add more ? Can i use OTG ? Again thank you.
Unfortunately this is one of the biggest limitation of the phone, I imagine you can always connect external device to backup photo (i haven't try myself), but otherwise, there is no micro-SD slot or any easy way to expand the internal storage easily
An excellent video, I have watched it several times while playing with my P20 Pro and it has really helped me understand the camera functionality and settings, thank you.
Great tutorial. Thanks Richard. Learned a lot. Too bad the Mate 30 Pro does not come with Google. I have a P10 Pro, but will upgrade as soon as things stabilise.
Hi Behram, thank you! Yeah it's a shame about that. But I just uploaded a video about how to get apps on the Mate 30 Pro. The phone is useable but certainly hope situation or the huawei appgallery will improve quickly in the near future. P40 is coming very soon!
I appreciated the differentiation between the portrait mode and Aperture mode. I initially thought it was a redundant setting but you clarified the difference. I'm still perplexed as to why Huawei hides the monochrome setting in a submenu instead of a dedicated onscreen button. What's your opinion on the DxO Mark scoring for Cellphones?
Found your channel after I bought my P20 Pro a week ago. Fantastic videos which has helped me a lot! I saw your video on making long exposure photos, which I really liked. Do you have any recommendations when buying a tripod? Thanks!!
Top man and a top video thank you just got my phone today and you helped a lot. I got the P20 pro mate version now its a bit cheaper i never buy a phone straight off the shelf, i wait a few months first to check the reviews and the P20 pro mate came out on top.
Hi Mavis, thanks for the suggestions. I am aiming to create an update version of this complete video after mate30 release, but if I have some spare time I will create a quick video explaining some of the changes p30 has
Thanks for the feedback pitak! Unfortunately I have about 5 reviews/video line up already so probably won't have time to work on a update until after the mate 30 launch
Very nice review, Richard! In other words, night mode deal with high dynamic range? How goes the night mode to capture all dynamic range in a landscape photo ?! Like the one in this video ...
if you want to do some major editing to it, RAW has all the information, so you can do more adjustment with less image degradation. If you just want to apply an instagram filter, then don't worry about RAW.
You can do HDR too. But do you want to brighten sky or darken it? Normally we want to darken it for better looking photos and that's what the master AI would do as well
If you have any question about the Huawei's camera app/settings, feel free to post a message and I'll try to answer your question.

Thank you! Glad you found the video useful :)
Thanks Mr Wong, this is awesome!
You are so fast! Glad you like it. And feel free to leave me a comment if you got any questions about the camera app settings
Thank u Mr Wong..u made it simple
Glad you like it Johari :)
Found your channel after I bought my P20 Pro a week ago. Fantastic videos which has helped me a lot!
I saw your video on making long exposure photos, which I really liked. Do you have any recommendations when buying a tripod?
Thanks!!
Thanks, learned so much from you. Really help me to improve my videos for my channel. 💕👍
Thank you so much, it was so useful 💕
Glad it was helpful!
Top man and a top video thank you just got my phone today and you helped a lot. I got the P20 pro mate version now its a bit cheaper i never buy a phone straight off the shelf, i wait a few months first to check the reviews and the P20 pro mate came out on top.
Can you do one for P30 pro? I believe P30 pro has more features..Thanks.
Hi Mavis, thanks for the suggestions. I am aiming to create an update version of this complete video after mate30 release, but if I have some spare time I will create a quick video explaining some of the changes p30 has
@@TheRealRichardWong This is a perfect time to update this video with EMUI 9.1. I'm guessing that the Mate 30 Pro will be shipped with EMUI 10
Yes it helps balance the high contrast but also help reduce the noise / improve image quaity.
Do these features comes in Huawei P30 Lite (pro mode) with shutter speed etc
Yes. Most features are available
@@TheRealRichardWong Thanks sir

Thank you Egil!
Thanks for video its really helpfull not for camera of hauwie only but for pro mode in any camera thanks again
Glad you find it helpful
excellent video with lots I didn't know
Glad you like it Royce
Hey dude, your video is excellent! I got a question: When do I need to take RAW photos? What's good for?
if you want to do some major editing to it, RAW has all the information, so you can do more adjustment with less image degradation. If you just want to apply an instagram filter, then don't worry about RAW.
@@TheRealRichardWong Ty 4 the fast reply and the answer, expert!
In your blue sky situation. Could i take brigth sky with bright tree? Or it can not do it.
You could always adjust the exposure to make it brighter if you want using one of the methods I described in the video :)
@@TheRealRichardWong it's not same with new iphone xs auto hdr that can automatically do it right?
You can do HDR too. But do you want to brighten sky or darken it? Normally we want to darken it for better looking photos and that's what the master AI would do as well
How to switch between the cameras in Huawei p30? And is there an option for adjusting the resolution of the shotsbefore taking them? Thank you!
Loved it. Great vid!!
Thanks Jez natad!
Excellent effort and elaborated very well.... Keep it up....
So basically EV = ISO?
Thank you for your video, it's a life saving.
Thanks for watching! But no, EV is a way to control overexposure, it could mean changing either or both of iso and shutter speed on your phone camera.
