I’m a pandemic plant parent and I can’t imagine going back to a life without my babies. My plants saved me from going into a really dark place especially after losing my mom to covid, so nope my plants are here to stay!
I’m so sorry for your loss. I lost my partner of 17 years to complications from Covid last August and, like you, my plants have been very therapeutic for me in the darkest points of my grief. I’ve collected plants for many years but this last year their care and attention took on a whole new meaning. They gave me structure and purpose in my day and filled the void that I was left with when he passed. I hope your plants continue to bring you joy and comfort during this difficult time. 💕🪴💕
I work in the pet industry, last year you couldn't even adopt a pet due to high number of adopters, this year we are seeing many returns. Can't imagine plants are much different once people run out of time or can't adjust their schedule
Ugh. This makes me so sad. Many people don’t understand what being a (responsible) pet owner entails. We too have so many dogs in the shelters here right now that need homes because they were dropped off or returned after people got back to “real life” and they became a burden. Breaks my heart.
that's kind of my problem, pandemic plants are just plants, pandemic pets are literally being dumped in the street and kennels and rescues are full. reminds me why i like plants more than people.
Ugh I have noticed the same for both-- we manage a non profit city dog park and it's like a 40% attrition rate and then folks a year later are trying to adopt again as if anything has changed 🤦 pets aren't fast fashion/replaceable 😒 And every week I see tons of plants in their original greenhouses pots just tossed in the trash like so so many plants that are neglected and I'm pretty sure placed in a dark corner and then shocked they die. It's all replaceable and cheap and awful😭♻️
Wow it’s interesting to hear what you are presenting, I have always been a plant mom for as long as I can remember, but somehow, the pandemic has made me more interested in other rare plants too, like the albo and tai constellation monstera, I have the albo now. I have always love plants 🪴 and I enjoy them all, I just couldn’t have enough of them. “Happy planting” Jimmy. Thank you, love your videos as always.
Alot of people used the pandemic to price gouge. Baskets of Cebu Blue and micans from hardware stores ended up as leaf node cuttings at high prices on the internet. Rare plant dealers tripling prices. I think alot of people who bought expensive plants as investments will be surprised when the demand falls or the market gets oversaturated. The people who truly love the beauty of plants will be left in the hobby.
I think some ppl will go on an plants will go by the way side an left behind, but there’s gonna be a huge remnant that goes on for life like me. I think one it’s in your blood it’s forever. I’m appreciative of the world opening up so that ole farts like me can see an experience plants that I other wise would of never gotten see. Thank you Jimmy for time an efforts
I miss good ‘ol trading, clipping sharing, and coffee talk with my local plant community. I feel like it’s just become solely a money-making mission lately. I’m a business woman, so I get it. But it’s just gotten to be a little too much. I *do* appreciate that all the new interest has lent us valuable information and I agree it’s given us all opportunities to learn more and try new things with our plants. I’m glad you pointed that out. It’s a positive way to see things. I’m just quietly and patiently waiting for things to settle a bit so it can go back to somewhat normal. It’s been a fun ride nonetheless, that’s for sure. What a year!
right now it's hot and with any collectible sort of hobby you will end up attracting people who try to gatekeep and drive prices up. the great thing about plants is that their prices are always doomed to fall because they multiply. nothing else really does that. and when the pandemic is over and people no longer have time to care fo plants like they used to or watch planty content, the ones who really care about it will stick around. I'll be a larger number than before but all those plant flippers and businesses that cost too much will die out because if will no longer bring in the profit that they made originally.
Always been a planty person way before this rage. I’m in my 60s and have had plants since I was a child. Indoor/outdoor all plants. I could never figure out why people didn’t love plants like me. I’m overjoyed that so many have jumped on the plant train. It makes me so happy. Such a rewarding hobby. As life gets back to somewhat normal please pandemic parents don’t give up on your plants. Stick with this beautiful hobby it’s a lifelong journey. 💚
I joined the plant family last summer because I was stuck at home and I needed something to bring life into my room. What started as simple decoration turned into a fulfilling hobby that taught me about patience, appreciation and being perceptive.
same, i've come from a long line of farmers and have always been interested in plants, bot indoor and outdoor ones. I've always been growing something and trying to take care of it since i was and learned how seeds worked. seeing people join in on the practice really makes me happy and every time i see someone irl who is also into plants, i get excited!
My response to your question: Yes. I've learned after 3 kids and 15 yrs of bartending that most people are into things or believe things because those things are popular. I like to scratch the surface and keep my circle small. But hey! No one is gonna steal my enjoyment of plants! Ahahaha.
In addition to bringing attention to the houseplant game, the pandemic brought attention to “the simpler things of life.” Whether growing houseplants or vegetable gardening outside, people began to relate to their environments in more reflective ways. Just look at coconut coir - people found out that peat is unsustainable, so they looked for options. Same thing with LECA. I recently saw an ad for plastic-free grow pots. I firmly believe that plant parents of all types could actually change the industry - and dare I say, the planet? - for the better. I’d love to see us all find ways to reduce or eliminate plastics (esp single-use) in our hobby, for example. Like, does soil “need” to come in plastic? There have def been some irritating developments, like price-gouging, people buying up a store’s entire stock of something just to flip the plants. There will always be the money-grubbing losers out there. But on the whole, I love this community, especially my local one. We have the same struggles, and being “Mass-holes,” we all have the same crass sense of humor! 😉

Since feb this year i now have 66 hoya and 10-15 other plants in my unit . I know heaps more within a short time watching heaps of plant RUclips & reading in Facebook plant group. It’s an amazing journey. People will always comes and goes
I’m covid plant parent and 64 years old - kinda late to the game but I’ve always loved botanical gardens and checking out plants at the nurseries. In march 2020 I started to collect the big box store house plants. I have about 50 plants. I’ve learned so much this past year and in addition to enjoying the plants I’ve also enjoyed all the plant videos. It’s been fun. I doubt I’ll have any plant legacy but learning and appreciating nature isn’t a joke regardless of the long term future of my collection. For now I plan to maintain and possibly build my collection as space and my energy permits. Thanks for all your videos. They’ve been very helpful and I’ve enjoyed all the tours.
I just want prices to drop and love the plethora of info easily available. But I'm not gonna judge anybody for any type of hobby or lifestyle they choose to get into at any point of their lives.💚
Im seeing soooo much less plants being sold on my page. And i believe the effects are starting to become noticeble. Plant seller will have to start dropping prices soon because of the lack of money flowing in. 😜 I used to work at a shop called plnts and it is huge in europe but i believe less people will drop a hundred euros on something let alone 1500. Because life is exspensive and we wanna go out to dinner and take trips. All that is possible with that slightly left over money
I am downsizing to make room for more Hoya, which I love! There are definitely non-Hoya plants that I will keep, and some that will be difficult to give away. Through my crazy Covid plant journey, my plant interest has become more specific, but I will always have “a lot” of houseplants!

Yeah I imagine plants dried up crispy brown in the windows of America.....lol no I hope it really helps our hobby flourish bigger and better!!!!! I been keeping plants since I was 11 thanks to my grandma who owned more pothos then all of America combined...lol she loved monsteras too!! I'm 21 now and my collection is bigger than ever and heathy and happy!!
I don't consider myself a plant parent. I've owned plants for a long time and enjoy caring for them. Not everything has to do with covid. I'm so tired of hearing and talking about it.

I am what they call a 'pandemic planter'. I went from 5 inhouse plants to over 200 houseplants in one year during covid. Not being able to go on vacation and spending a lot of time in house, making my home green with plants gave me the vacation feeling at home. I think a lot of people started the planthobby during covid for similar reasons. Just because someone just started with a new hobby doesnt mean they are not sincere or 'not real enthousiasts'. I know that I will be keep this hobby for years to come and I am now starting a tropical garden. @legends of monstera love your channel hope to see more anthurium updates, also curious on how, when and why did you start the plant hobby?
You're right about COVID really expanding the community. I think there were just plenty of sleeper hobbiests. Myself included. For me... pre-COVID, I picked up a bio minor with a focus in genetics and botany at UT and never properly engaged it because wielding my Computer Science AI major was more lucrative and ate up all my time and had no real space for plants. Before covid I think I had like... Maybe 10 plants at home and maybe took care of 5 or 6 at the office... it was pretty casual. I had never done a proper outdoor garden. But, during covid I got to spend time at home and finally got to apply my minor to my work space because it isn't a shared office and is my home in which I can do whatever I want. COVID gave me the space to properly reimagine what it looked like to use both of my degrees at the same time. Now I've automated my outdoor food garden with more plants then I can count and my indoor game has elevated substantially. Early covid I was propping basil on my windowsill. Now, the majority of my props are rare plants and they have their own room that I call my grow lab. And on top of that, in the name of COVID plant parents upping the game, I think I've isolated a clear problem in the plant space where it comes to really teaching people how to care for their plants. I think this is really where my two majors meet and can shine and fill a need that merges plant care with AI. I personally don't need the thing but I think watering is people's biggest problem... I think it'd be pretty cool to be able to automate building custom tailored instructions that handhold people through their watering needs in the form of a phone app that just alerts you when you ACTUALLY need to water based on your actual in home conditions for each individual plant and simplifies it all down to a basic push notification on your phone. Anyway, thanks for the videos during COVID. I can't count how many times I watched your Albo videos trying to figure my stuff out. The info and clarity has been invaluable. When the market opens up, it forces people to leave their homes to work, which means they will need to sacrifice the time to take care of things and people that actually matter. In this world overly demanding technological connection at home, work and play, people are yearning for ways to connect with nature and that's no coincidence. If their small opportunity to disconnect is via houseplants, I'm happy for them.
You are on to something 🤔but as for me ,myself and I I've always had plants in my life my mom gave me an aglonema 30 years ago I still have her and I've shared rooted peaces with my daughter's and sister and now I have a house full of pants,I'm seeing plants that was only available on line and hopefully there will be more and more in our local nurseries and then prices will hopefully come down this hobby shouldn't only be for the rich we all deserve a little peace of heaven on earth 😊

I have been a plant parent for 45 years since I got out of school where I took Horticulture classes.
I can't wait until the prices drop and maybe get a few good trades.
