Great video. I've started to literally take the horn out of my mouth to help me adjust. I believe Miles advised Coltrane to do the same thing once they started experimenting with modes and Trane had trouble ending solos.
GREAT VIDEO! Thank you for providing ways to practice leaving space. I’ve been told to “leave more space” but I’ve never been told how to practice that. Thank you so much
Oh man, being told to do things but not HOW to practice them, is one of my pet peeves. So many educators essentially just say "get better!" I'm so glad you found the video helpful!
There's a lot to be said for not saying anything, and it definitely works with music as well. The quiet parts are just as important and can speak volumes.
Agreed 100%. Masterful actors, comedians and orators are also super-comfortable with silences. Easier said than done though. Someone must have once said "those who speak the most often have the least to say". If not, I just said it.

That's a great way to get used to it! I've heard that story about Miles and 'Trane too, I really hope it's true

Miles also knew he wasn't getting paid per note - dude was a straight up gangsta.
Ha! That's very true. Rent was cheaper in those days anyway 😂
Great video! The tips are very good for aspiring jazz musicians :)
Thanks for watching! It's great to hear you enjoyed the video!
Another great video. I love your stuff, man. Probably buying your Dexter Gordon ebook.
Thanks Nick! So glad you're enjoying the content! The ebook is full of information, I'm sure you'll love it!
Quality video Josh & great advice. Thank you so much for posting cheers
Thanks, Brian!
4:13 that’s smooth
use of space/timing/fewer notes but great, unexpected notes occasionally
The drum loops. What's your drum loops plug? Please
I use DrumGenius. It's a great app with so many different loops in all different styles
@@joshwakeham thanks

Very true. I still struggle with the keeping my mouth shut part though!

Damn....Start transcribing more Getz solos. You got his sound . Learn his vocabulary. .... (sorry for my rant, was a great video on space).
Haha I promise I'll start working on that I Want to Be Happy solo soon!
Space
HI SON!!!!!!
It's not the notes you put in. It's the notes you leave out. (Who said that!)
pst... I prefer Lee Morgan👍
Lee Morgan is an absolute monster!
Woody Shaw leads the pack.
Maybe.he was not.looking for valedation any more then an enlightened person does not serve his ego.
I'm sure that's part of it. Few people seem to have the same level of self-confidence as Miles did!
space is the place
