Bummer. My 2002 S10 was running hot. Ended up being a leaking intake gasket. I got lucky. Coolant was leaking outside the engine block. Coolant wasn't mixing with the oil or being burned. Stay safe, well and positive.

I have been full time on the road and plan to do my own trailer this year and be full time again as soon as I can. The renting a UHaul is a fantastic tip I hope I never have to use. 😂. Sorry for your bad luck.
I built my rig a few years ago and I decided to use a full size truck to Hall my 7 x 14.
My logic was cars and SUVs are not built to pull trailers up and down mountains, too much drivetrain stress.
Found the right truck and installed a rebuilt engine a rebuilt transmission and changed the gearing.
I should also note, I did not go with a newer truck, in fact it's over 30 years old. I can literally work on anything on it myself.
I haven't had to lift a finger on it besides changing the oil in all this time.
How I realize not everybody can install rebuilt drivetrains, but I think the most important thing is a good tow vehicle that was designed for just that, then make it reliable.
Solo Nomads are always rolling the dice, having the proper vehicle in good condition just makes sure that the dice are loaded in your favor.
My insurance is through progressive, and I seem to recall for an additional fee that they will assist with expenses related to vehicle breakdowns and Rental Vehicles.

That's nice of you to say. Today marked 30 days parked here without a car and possibly the noisiest spot I've ever experienced. My nerves are a bit frayed but I'll survive.. I have word that my car is finished and running and I should be getting it back Monday. The mechanic was going to give me a ride to buckeye today but he ran into delays not being able to get off work so he lent me his truck starting today so I should be able to move at least back into public lands and get a decent night's sleep. And yes I did watch those videos and have been talking to people about it. I sure appreciate your concern. Take care.

Sorry for your bad luck. You ran into a group of good people so it appears a tide fortunate events is a positive sign.
I hope antifreeze didn't get into the oil in your jeep. That happened to my old van and it ended up wiping the bearings out. A friend gave me an old motor that ran great when he junked it after the trans took a dump. I tested it on an engine stand for a week or so. It had been sitting in storage for a few years. Now I have to hire someone to get it installed. Not a fun job.
I'm sure you'll have a large chunk of change in this project when it gets done.
I want to share an oil additive product called Motorkote I discovered not long ago. I met the inventer ( a really smart guy) and saw the demonstration that you can see on RUclips. I really recommend watching the Project Farm video where the guy runs a lawn mower with water in the crankcase after treating the engine with Motorkote.
Sorry about your predicament but I'm glad you found some people that welcomed you.
    Best wishes.

Wow. I'm so glad you mentioned antifreeze getting into the oil.. one of the symptoms I had is when I first started it up in the morning since I got it out of the first shop is some smoke would come out of the tailpipe and I swear I could smell a hint of antifreeze in that..
I assume that would indicate I did get antifreeze into my oil for a Time... Are you saying this product could help alleviate that problem for my bearings later?
Sounds to me you really know what you're talking about and perhaps you could recommend to me what else I can do for the engine.
Thanks a lot for your comment.
      Super helpful

    • @supersteveize
      @supersteveize 9 месяцев назад

In your situation as gamble sort of I'd put it in the oil before it gets fired up. If you smelled antifreeze from the exhaust there is a chance that some antifreeze made it by the rings. You might be okay with a little bit of antifreeze that leaked by. Antifreeze can really wipe the bearings quickly. Rings also sometimes . If you ever suspect that you've blow a head gasket the best thing to do is immediately drain the coolant and put straight water instead . Water evaporates and won't hurt your bearings.
Motorkote plates the bearings and is hard to remove. The thing is that the motor has to run like 20 minutes or so to saturate the bearing surface. If you watch the Motorkote or Project Farm RUclips you'll see that for each test they use an Arkansas stone to make a new surface to test with. I spent the evening with the inventor and I watched him test all kinds of lubricants. Truck drivers were buying the hell out of his products. The one test that really sold me was with almost 3 times the weight of almost every oil he washed the bearing with brake clean. I know what brake clean smells like. Brake clean takes oil and grease out of everything. With 3 times the weight the test continued turning and didn't make any noise.
Motorkote works on anything metal to metal such as guns, fishing gear, transmissions and wheel bearings. All major truck engine manufacturers endorse it. Mack, Volvo and Cummins off the top of my head.
I've rambled on a lot. Like I said install the Motorkote with the fresh oil before the initial refire and you might get lucky. If were me I'd want to witness the first crank over. If the motor seems really labored ( like it sounds like a bad starter) that's not a good sign.
Geeze, It's food for thought. It's disheartening I know.
      Best wishes .
      Think Positive!!!

I'm glad you've been researching mechanics and checking references. In my many years I haven't found found but a few with a high enough integrity level and moral compass to recommend to a friend.
I've kinda figured out how to test mechanics honesty of sorts. Put on your acting hat for this one. Find some kinda stupid questions to ask ( that you know the answers to), act sincere and see if they are genuine or try to play you. Needless to say that I have trust issues. If you have to replace the motor my heart goes out to you. Don't give all the money till the job is done. Mechanics mark up parts. Sad reality.
      I really feel your pain.
A personal repair story for your amusement.
In my old gray van ( the one that needs the motor installed) driving east just west of Bloomington Illinois my transmission took a dump. Nothing was leaking from the trans. The van wouldn't move. The trans was full of fluid. I had a quart of Lucas oil stop leak about as thick as molasses and I forced a 1/2 quart in . That got the van to move and I drove it about 4 miles on the shoulder about 15 mph up the off ramp and over the highway. I asked the people in the gas station if I could park out back until I solve the problem. They were nice and said okay. I got on Craigslist and typed in 700r4 and found one locally for $300. I called the guy up and he said he would come meet me behind the gas station . He was firm on the price and so I asked if he knew anybody to install it. He wanted to install wear it sat and I said no way. We agreed on $200 to install it if I helped and shook on it. He left to see if a friends lift was available. He invited me to join him on the quest but I declined. I now had a headache from hunger and stress. The lift was in use so he decided to tow the van to his garage a few miles away. I had a tow bar on my van already since I used to tow it behind semi tractors because my job was delivering them.
His brother came by with a 1 ton pickup and we ventured to the garage which happened to be a barn. The two brothers dove in removing the trans and I excused myself till my headache subsided. About a half hour later I was laying on the plywood covering the dirt floor getting the mixer dropped. The younger brother brought out from the house beer and a 1/2 dozen corndogs. When his GF arrived he split. These guys were great to work with and were kind and understanding. At around 4 am the guy who sold the trans to me couldn't stay awake anymore. I paid him shook his hand and thanked him for bailing me out. He left me alone to finish up. I closed up the barn and turned out the lights. He said he would keep the old trans for 3 months and then he would scrap it. I tried a couple times but I never made it happen. I had a truck to pick up in Chicago later that day and made it on time.
I haven't told that story in a while but show how things can work out sometimes.

I have a few from back in the old days like in the 80s blowing the engine in the middle of canyonlands.. towing it 90 miles with a 10 ft. length of chain.. it's a long story but it all worked out great but in those days it almost cost nothing to get into trouble or replace a car.

As usual when I make a video I noticed later there's all kinds of things I left out I should have said. One of the things in this video is that I didn't make it clear that I only rented the U-Haul for 2 days and once my trailer had a place close to everything I needed, I can get around on foot and there is a great free shuttle that will take you from one end of town to the other.
