- I do enjoy having a lunch out in the Land Rover while operating ham radio. I do not have a mobile HF radio set up in the vehicle as I never leave radios in there and setting up a permanent HF antenna on the Land Rover Discovery 2 requires a lot of bonding and messing about which I can't be bothered to do compared to having choices with portable antenna configurations. So I like to quickly deploy an antenna like this one that gets me on 40m, 20m and 17m.

I'm a licensed amateur radio operator from the United Kingdom. My RUclips channel features videos focusing on operating portable radio from various locations plus how to videos, tutorials, insights and conversations in the hobby.
The simple set ups always seem to work well.
My mate just drives up a mountain in his vehicle in the winter, and chills out with a bust set up and radio .not lots of camping gear, make the vehicle the house on wheels. You can go bush for weeks.
Good luck.73.
Agreed. M1ECC antennas are the quickest to deploy and adjust.
Been using my Lab599 TX500 for almost 2 years now. And with the m1ecc dx slidewinder a lot of the time. Usually use 3S LiPo packs as these are just about perfect combination of voltage, power and weight for operating portable. Also have a Tracer LiFePO4 24Ah pack for when weight not an issue.
Love the radio,. Generally CW and 5W for me, and lots of great DX in Australia and NZ from UK.
Top fun.
Also in a Discovery, but a 3 and I haven't broken down yet!

Great work Carl. Nice setup great little activation. I need to get out and do one.
Got a funny story to tell you one day regarding my XYL. 😂

great setup
Cheers Carl, always a pleasure, really like the Lab 599, 73 !!
I really enjoyed this one! Nice antenna and working conditions mate! Keep up the good work, and all the best to you and the family from across the pond in a humid (but not smoky) VE3, Canada!
Great video Carl, Showing the fast & very easy setup of the Slidewinder Antenna, Goes very well with the Lab599 Radio.
Thanks Carl another good video, supplying me with ideas galore? Richard still a 2E0 and still enjoying playing radio...
A great set up what radio should be and enjoyed.
I used to use the same antenna mount with the MFJ 17.5’ telescopic. Worked well. As long as the wind didn’t get up.
Of course North of the border. It’s cold, damp and comparatively dismal.
Really like your Lab 599 Carl.
Shame it does not have a colour display.
Interested to know how it compares to the IC-705 performance wise.
Thanks for the video Carl. My portable antenna of choice is a 40m band EFHW from Chris M0VUE, usually in an inverted-V with a 6m telescopic mast. Great lightweight design of a balun and winder integrated together, that you can chuck in backpack for POTA/SOTA. Look forward to seeing your video together.
Carl. I like your tripod for your antenna, I believe that it is the quickest way to setup a portable vertical antenna, and it sure seems very sturdy. You also mentioned another favorite antenna of mine for portable operations the end fed half wave antenna, my two favorites for a quick setup and take downs, again, Carl, great job and thank you sharing and by the way, nice spot you chose to play radio.
I'm very interested in that radio, it looks like an excellent piece of kit. I want to do more outdoor radio and live between Dartmoor and Exmoor. It can be damp/humid here so might be worth thinking about. I'm not sure I can face a doughnut again though.
Great fun Carl,i was probably admiring your Disco more than anything, always fancied one years ago but i was told no😂.The radio sounds great though and good hear you have recovered from your fall.
Hi Carl...Really enjoyed your short video... Appreciate your time. M1bsz
Hi Carl another enjoyable watch!...that radio looks nice, & could be part of your E.D.C. cheers!
seam like a nice radio Carl all the best Allan G6TMO
Excellent setup Carl. Been looking at those batteries for ages. How are you finding them? In terms of charging, what do you use?
Hey Carl that weather is far too good for you to be out🤣🤣loving the truck!!! Did you ever do a follow up video after you set up at work that time? Looking forward to the next one mate 73
Ha cheers! No follow up yet, I’ll probably do one later this year on a Sunday when it’s RF quieter
Carl, just a warning, I had that exact same battery (8Ah version) and it lasted 10 months before I had to get a refund off Eco Worthy - which was very prompt after a few back and forth messages to be fair. I got a different brand also off Amazon now, same physical size. We'll see how it goes...
Ok cheers Mark, what was the issue?
@@M0SZT too scared to look inside but ultimately not holding charge. Never getting to full charge. Think a cell was bust.
hi, great video as always! what was the yota and the next call sign? I have rewinded more than 50 times the video, but still not sure... HT23YOTA, JT23YOTA, HE23YUTA, JE23YOTA.......... is it possible to train the call sign listening?
