Thank you Jeff, born in Liverpool but left in 1981, and travelled about a bit. In fact I left the week the riots broke out. Seems like millions of years ago now. Keep them coming.
Thanks Jeff, i was born in Vandyke street in the 50s, lodge lane was magical , it had every type of shop you could think of , pet shop , wool shop, carpet shop , bakers, sadlers ,fish shop, veg, shop chippy, grocery, DIY , record shop, swimming baths , library , theatre, petrol garage, and many more. Bentley road used to be the home of many embassies, all the different flags . The big circuses like Billy Smarts that used to be in sefton park use to come down the lane elephants walking behind each other. There was more or less a pub on every street corner. Hopefully i have jilted a few memories for some and they can add their memories of the lane. Thanks for vid
Hi Phil, The wool shop was more or less at the top of your street, the 1st pub to close down in my era was the red brick (Ritson st) sinking apparently. Billy macs pet shop moved from tunnel rd to next door to duggies (Dove st adventure playgroup) Solway st/Lodge lane. Selma had a shop with her husband and kids facing Goodalls (spendwell) and then they took it over. Lodgey was in a bad way before the riots. When the computers went down in the TSB you could draw money out even if you had none, then face the consequences when they come back on. Good times the 70s/80s a lot better than today.
The waste ground next to the library and to Grierson Street was the site of Lodge Lane Public Baths and Wash house. I worked there for many years in the 70’s and 80’s. Great memories of the people I worked with.
The grassed area next to the former library used to be a victorian swimming baths. I think it was still in use after the riots, but it was eventually demolished in the 90's.
I used to live on Ritson St in the 1950s before moving to Woolton. I have fond memories of this area. It seems that we've lived parallel lives - as always, very interesting video which I really enjoyed - thanks for posting.
My family lived in Ritson Street in the 1950's/60's early '70's. Went to Tiber St school. We moved to Runcorn early'70's. I've travelled and lived in a few countries since then. I spent many happy hours in Lodge Lane baths & the library. A lifetime ago😏☘️
Thank you, Jeff. I have now spent many (!) happy hours with your videos. I was born in Mossley Hill. Moved to Canada. Returned to Liverpool and, for a while, lived in Grove Park off Lodge Lane. I ended up back on the West Coast of Canada. But your videos of Woolton, the No. 5 Bus, Wavertree, Littlewoods, etc. are all nostalgic for me.
Thanks Jeff just AMAZING sad no mention of the Silver Blades Ice rink where I was a regular skater. And I couldn’t see the Saddlery where I was a regular visitor in my youth in Lodge Lane but of course time changes things. Keep up the good work Jeff I envy you the ability to walk these distances good work, my 85 year old legs just about keeps me upright. Cheers 🍻
Good to see the black and white photos of lodge lane baths ,swam in there many times ,I remember it being a very small pool, and I used to walk the length of lodge lane to attend the Arundel comprehensive school which is now a care home for four years back in the late 60s Happy days, good blog as the kids would say 👍
Hi Jeff, l also lived in Ritson Street. Please, you did this video,l remember going to the swimming baths also sneaking into the wash house next door. My first pub l went in was the Harrington Arms also went to Tiber Street school also Arundel school at the bottom l think the Toxteth riots destroyed the area, but great to see so meny little restaurant's and being so vibrant now, definitely memories lane for me,the flats at the bottom l always remember them as they are now,but opposite this was my old school but now a care home which looks closed. So meny shop's l remember growing up in the area, to meny to mention thanks for sharing 👍
Hi Linda, We lived at no 5 River Avon St and we left in 1965 as Dad got a job down south in Berkshire. Went to St Clemens infants, then Tiber Street and then Princes Park school. Went back to the pool a few years ago for a cousins funeral and we walked from Sefton Park all the way to where River Avon St was and wow what a change since 1965 😯❤. I was amazed that our old street was not there any more and all the places I remember such as the baths, the schools from my childhood were now gone and the swimming baths was just a standing wreck 😩.
@@davewebster6945 i loved the old Street been bk home a few times took my uncle and my step mum to sefton park all good memories the street is still there but all changed our house was turned into new flats met a few of the local people in the next street think it was Danube street so plesent people thank you for your memory's
I used to work there in the late 70's. Lots of happy memories and some pretty weird ones too ! Fantastic story from the riots or rather looting as far as LL was concerned.
The yard on the corner of Bentley rd used to be occupied by J Blake Ford commercial vehicle showroom. The Somali women's Centre opposite which had been Mersey cabs offices.
All parts of Liverpool are different than the parts we grew up in. Lodge Lane is tottely different than the one I grew up in, off Smithdown Road bought all my records from the record shop facing The Boundary. Visited the saddler, and had my holster and belt made by him. Drank in The Solway Arms, The Dart.
Does anyone remember the Dressler ? im white but HAD to go there the music was SOOO good, met loads of friends there over the years , miss that place, just pure happiness.
On the left before you reach Bentley Road on the return leg used to stand Princess Park School for Boys which in the mid 60’s became Arundel Comprehensive and latter on on the same side was Tiber Street junior school. I lived on Asbridge Street from 1957 till 1976. In those days you could leave your doors unlocked because it was a very close community.
Boy u guys missed out, 1969, bedsit, £4 a week, no hot water, shopped on Gramby , went Lodge Lane baths (up stairs ) for a bathh lived there when the blackouts where on .
I moved to lodgy when i was 1 in 56 and lived in beaumont st in the flats behind the pivvy until i left in 77 great days nearly drowned in the baths before lifeguards were compulsory glad to see it coming back to life.
The riots finished off Lodgy as we knew it. It used to be a great diverse place to live now look at it! Its a **** hole and typical of most diverse communities across the country. Very sad.

I put an old photo of the baths at the end of the video, and after posting it I thought, I bet the baths was on that grassland. Thanks for verifying.
@@Jeff1photo There are still white tiles attached to the outer wall also.
It was the baths, and a washouse was in the same building,

Two days after filming this, on Saturday night someone was stabbed in Ritson Street. Police closed the area for at least 2 days.

It would be amazing to see the haunts of all where the Beatles may have been but I think you've done a brilliant video..
Great video jeff lodge lane has changed big time i grew up ther in the 70s
Litter everywhere.
Very diverse, indeed.
Litter everywhere in the UK ,full stop.
I know, it's a disgrace. Top end of Smithdown is the same.
I've heard working class scousers saying don't go to Toxteth.

Yes it was the baths. I put a photo of the baths at the end of the video and didn't realise that's where it used to be.

Absolutely agree.
Get over it
I worked at Amazon Knowsley and use to come to buy takeaway food mostly on Friday really nice food
Looks like lots of choice down there. Thanks for the comment 👍

And about to get worse too

Amazing
Thx ✨🥰
Definitely a No Go Area.
Lodge Lane had to change. Especially after 1981. It's thriving now. People say with foreign money.
I think people might be right.
My grandad was born in Mozart street which I think was there somewhere.
The place looks a mess, rubbish everywhere.
It paints an awful picture. Robbie Fowler came from Toxteth, I don't think you'll be getting Robbie Fowler's coming out of Toxteth anytime soon.
Tell curtess Jones of the same team that
It's a dump
