Wouldn't the scientist know the exit? Why would he trap himself in an endless loop? How could he have survived being devoured by the subjects? It's why I believe that your theory of the main character being the villain is insufficient. Likely, that body found while crawling through the vents could've been the scientist.

It seems to me that he's gone crazy like all the other patients. The fact that his own recordings are conveniently in places to be found, it's his own memories. He'll probably loop it until he dies.
