Yeah... I learned the hard way that Rhino Rack sucks when it comes to customer care... but their design is pretty fantastic. I got the mount as well thinking I can mount then sideways... only to realize the same as you... $87 additional... I suppose it's corporate culture like that.
I put the large one on my 200 series of the side for my surf fishing rods. So good not climbing ladders on the sand to get the rods down.
It's an awesome system

Did you try going to bunnings and getting a bracket and pack of bolts? Would have set you back $15 max.
I have thought about it, and you are correct The thing is universal brackets looks out of place on the roof rack system and there is bit of work involved when you customising brackets also not to mention its bit hard to achieve looks. When you buying paint and adding few coats it could be a half Sunday projected instead of 20 mins. But if you have tools and experience better crafting it other than buying off the shelves.
Rhino is cheap as for the quality they don’t do a bracket for the shovel holder that fits standard roof racks though as I wanted it on the side as to clear car parks, what brand shovel is that and price ? 👍

You think it can mount on rhino rack awning. I just bought 2 sets. I only wonder about clearance but i think it but fine. Key may have to stick up. Your thoughts
