In this Etude, the right hand only plays sixths! Even though this study sounds lighthearted, it’s one of the hardest in the Op. 25 set. The pianist has to use unusual fingerings to facilitate the scales in sixths, and the piece ends with one enormous chromatic scale up the piano. This study can provide a huge boost to technique, but it needs to be practiced very carefully to achieve a good result, and avoid damaging the hands.

Wondering whether Chopin was a masochist? I believe times have long changed and piano teachers ought to get with the times. There are fantastic note-perfect Stride piano, jazz giant virtuosos, Boogie Woogie, classical-pop crossovers, Liberace easy to grade 10 transcriptions available that I for one find far more gratifying pursuits than Chopin's mortications designed to subdue the unwilling finger-flesh into pianistic obedience.

Personally I find them to be very similar in terms of difficulty. They are both marked the same tempo - I did up taking this one a little slower. The left hand in this Etude is extremely difficult, and overall this Etude is much more difficulty in terms of harmonic complexity and counterpoint. For me, the hardest part of No. 6 is the middle section, which is just extreme. At some point, comparing the difficulty isn't necessarily that useful - I would say that Nos. 6, 8, 10, 11 are all basically the same level of difficulty - extreme. 😀 (No. 10 often underrated in terms of difficulty, because some people don't fully master the last page, which is a handbuster).
