  • Iron is well known for occurring in some minerals and rocks that are a red or black color. The vast majority of iron is mined from banded iron formations which almost exclusively formed before 1.8 billion years ago. #short #shorts #geology

    Banded iron is one of those wonders of nature that are so beautiful and fascinating, it's almost a shame that billions of tons of them are processed for industrial production. They are as old als life on Earth.
    Just imagine of what kind of world they could tell us, if they could talk.

    Thanks for covering these rock formations. Aside from my interests in astronomy, cosmology and volcanology, I am interested in paleogeography and geology as a whole.
    We all know Algol. He takes long too make videos, but those are of no worries because pretty much every video he makes is extremely detailed, thought provoking and research provoking. One of his most recent videos is "History of the Earth". You all have probably watched it, and we can all see that from 2.5 to 1.8 billion years ago, 750 to 720 million years ago, 660 million years ago and 635 million years ago, the Earth's oceans were colored and tinted with blood red. Of course, this phenomenon is due to the Banded Iron Formations or BIFs, which were rampant during these times. The oceans were red due to Iron (obviously) reacting with Oxygen and causing the oceans to rust (obviously)

    Sorry. I posted my comment prematurely. The first period of Banded Iron Formations from 2.5 to 1.8 billion years ago is particularly infamous because it coincides with the absolutely monstrous Huronian Glaciations and the Great Oxidation event, which killed pretty much all of the pre-existing bacteria that were not used to Oxygen. The later periods coincide with the gigantic Sturtian glaciation, the equally gigantic Marinoan glaciation and the breakup of Neoproterozoic supercontinent Rodinia. The aforementioned glaciations were most likely Snowball or Slushball Earths! As you can see, I am very grateful that Geology Hub published this video of Iron ores like the ones shown on the video.

    Some types of basalt quarried in Victoria Australia weathers to a brown red colour on its surface. I’m told that’s because of some iron being present.

    • @Martytalius
      @Martytalius Год назад +2

      You'd be correct! Basalts are classified as mafic igneous rocks which is made up of the words MAgnesian and FerrIC. These words indicate that basalt is rich in magnesium and iron.

    Fun to bloom out and forge. Very workable iron. Nothing beats using a knife to trim a ribeye that you forged from busted up rock, lump charcoal, a leaf blower and clay stack.

    Iron is a fairly common and plentiful ore, but imperative to survival, and is perhaps the most versatile ore there is. Found at y level 60 or below, or on the sides or in the caves of mountains, lay veins of raw iron, ranging from 3 to even 12 raw iron per vein. Used to construct iron armour and tools, it is also known for its use in the making of the bucket, allowing a person to pick up and transport water to different places, as well as cancel out their falling injuries with a well timed place.it’s most iconic use lies in the iron pickaxe, the tool required to Harvest the rare phenomenon known as diamond ore.

    Banded iron formations start forming from archean (not from 2500) about 3200 million years ago to 1800 m.y. That’s why it’s found in most of the archean rocks like iron ore group in singhbhum craton in india

      Roast the ore, crush the ore, build smelting furnace, build fire, add charcoal, ore, until it's full while blowing air, repeat as it burns down, do it until you run out of charcoal or ore or until the slag blocks the air flow, tap a hole at the bottom to release the molten slag, break open bottom of furnace, pull out iron bloom, hit on anvil to consolidate bloom: iron.
