Jerry Hadley was, no doubt, the best American tenor , and still is! The beauty and pureness of his voice plus his innate musicality, good taste and excellent vocal technique made him unique. So sad having lost him so prematurely. RIP, admired maestro!
@@boundary2580Jerry was a Lyric Tenor which allowed him to perform roles from Broadway to serious opera. Richard Tucker was a Spinto Tenor which is a deeper and stronger voice for heavier operatic roles. But undoubtedly Hadley could have been the successor of Tucker should he hadn’t died relatively young. His voice would have settled to a much bigger voice with the passing of the years but death robbed him from that opportunity. The opera world lost a great artist with his untimely passing. 😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢
The light heady sound at 2:50 was bloody stunning. I'm an aspiring Tenor and Mr Hadley's voice is such an inspiration to me. Up there with the old greats.

a very fine rendition of this great song! Jerry Hadley would have been a great member of the WSS 1985 recording. Having said that, it is not because Jose Carreras' voice wasn't lovely because it WAS! But I do think his heavy Spanish accent was detrimental to him playing Tony an "American" shark. . Still, Carreras did a great job particularly singing Maria and One Hand One Heart. RIP Maestro Hadley.
This is the GREATEST AMERICAN TENOR EXTREMELY WELL TRAINED BY TOM LOMONACO. THE VOICE IS SO FREE AND WITH RICH RESONANCE AND FULL OF LIFE. HIS UNDERSTANDING OF THE APPOGGIO BREATHING TECHNIQUE IS VERY EVIDENT AND FLAWLESS.

But DG wanted a more famous tenor to sell the recording.They called Neil Schicoff and Peter Hoffmann but when couldnt Jose Carreras was cast.Berstein didnt like his performance as we see in the video of the recording.Later in.1989 Lenny cast Hadley for his Candide recording.
It's truly a shame we couldn't hear him with that recording. Carreras is a wonderful talent but was just adrift in the recording. It needed Jerry's sensibility and timbre. What a Tony he would have made.
I believe Bernstein wanted JH for this recording but Beverly Sills would not let him out of contracted performances at NYCO. It is a nice tribute to JH that Carreras was his backup.
My most favourite version of Maria done by an opera tenor. So exquisite and more honest compared to Jose Carerras' version! Any more versions of this done by a tenor? Please let me know!

For around ten seconds (1:46 to 1:56) he's a bit off. But far from "horrific", and outstanding overall. I rather listen to these core singers that are not perfect, than to any other tenor today.
