"You're still gonna make it for your shift though, right?"
As a massive Lovecraft fan and someone who has real issues with depression I often draw the connection to the Crawling Chaos and the stuff that run through my head when things are bad ..... not sure if that is exactly what you were going for , but it still hit home for me. Art is open to interpretation. Keep up the good work!!
Hope you are okay. Keep fighting the good fight.
@@freakfire74 thank you my friend ... Do not succumb to the whisper of madness promising sweet oblivion.... Fight on even if it hurts! Hope you well..
@@goonbaggs Good to hear! Thanks for your reply. That made my day! :)

And where Nyarlathotep went, rest vanished, for the small hours were rent with the screams of nightmare.
I enjoy the simplicity of this, everyones already comented on the lighting growing darker but I like the way the framing gives the sense of something looming overhead. The music is great also and adds to the overall tone real nicely.
Hey thanks so much for the kind words!
This is legitimately freaky. I love it. The powerful building of dread is done artfully well.
Thanks a bunch!
I like how this piece annunciates the crawling chaos’ tendency to both enlighten and toy with humans. We are both his greatest fascination, and we are merely his playthings. Also the scenes of the man walking barefoot through the wilderness as a reference to the pharaoh traveling through the desert was a nice touch.
Pretty cool... it seems more about a person suffering depression than crawling chaos and cosmic horror tho.
I’m fairly sure they’re showing it manipulating this man into suicide. I could be a wrong though.
No your right the dark spot on the screen is nyarlephotep
Clearly you've never met someone who lives with depression of any kind...
What’s the difference? I think an existential quandary, full of loathing and self doubt, and racked with the pain and isolation of a pitiful and meaningless existence is exactly the kind of madness the crawling chaos produces.
@@drummyt7166 EXACTLY
this was awesome, I don't quite get why people hated it, it was subtle, with clues hidden in, as the shadows grow darker, Nyarlathotep gets closer until you finally see Nyarlathotep behind him as he jumps
Thank you! That’s how I feel, but I am a little biased haha
Dude this is a perfect representation of who the crawling chaos is. He is focused confusing yet specific. spreading pain dread and death with a form that makes no sense. Which makes perfect sense. This is amazing.
He didn't jump...
Nyarlathotep pushed...
the whole world away from his feet.
Oh hey vsuace
Watched a few times and liked it more and more. Very nice interpretation.
A real mad nihilist doesn’t check his voicemails
especially when a super powerful otherworldly monster is coming at him
is he the one checking his voicemails? or are we simply hearing them as audience members?
does he have an old-school voicemail machine that plays the messages out-loud as they are recorded?
also, if you think youre gonna know when an absurdly powerful otherworldly monster is coming after you, ive got some bad news for you. . .
Lovecraft was too charitable with his creations. he gave humanity a chance to see things coming.
reality wont be as kind.
@@HadalStreetlights he definitely did check the first voicemail himself at 00:36.

"In Their Wake There Is Only Insanity And Death." ~ H.P Lovecraft
Like all works of fantastic fiction, Lovecraft's stories are ultimately open to interpretation on the part of the individual reader. Your vision of the author's imagination here is certainly arresting and cryptic, and that's Lovecraft for ya. Thanks for this !
BRAVO! This was fantastic; very foreboding and original. Truly Lovecraftian! Thank you!
Short films are so much more difficult to breathe life in to than full length motion pictures. That is, if the writer/director has something to say. In this, we have an interpretation of Nyarlathotep.
There are elements of this that are extremely well done. The lack of dialog playing out as the descent in to madness works, and is easily conveyed. The singularity of the subject is the only issue I take. I recognize your attempt and understand the painting of one man’s darkness & loss of reality, but what always made Nyarlathotep so enthralling to me was the sheer immensity behind the awakening, and the magnetic-like pull to any living subject. Regardless, I absolutely appreciate your film and enjoyed it. The world needs more (decent) Lovecraftian film...to which you have now contributed.
Hey thanks so much for checking it out! I appreciate your honesty! It is very hard to make a short feel lived in, I agree. In my defense I would like to say that i did this quite a while ago and I like to think I've grown as a filmmaker since then. I have another culty short called Follower that I posted semi-recently if you're interested!
Yes! I liked the concept of the dark shadow, but what was conveyed was a stalking, and not a pulling in. Having the shadow in a corner or down the hall beaconing him and pulling him in might have fit better. It was still very well done and powerful.
@@gringofett3944 there's a moment at around 2:55 where he's walking toward an approximately coffin-shaped impossible shadow.
i think this adequately communicates the experience of being pulled in.
additionally, Nyarlathotep is generally presented as a seducer, not some kind of magnet. he twists people's desires, and makes them yearn. i think this is well-reflected in this film.
maybe that's just my read.
Nyarlahotep always sounded to me like a name for a Japanese-Egyptian cat girl pharoh.
That's the sound my cat makes when she gets into the catnip.
The "hotep" part is of Egyptian origin, in-universe. It's due to Naphren-Ka (either an avatar of Nyarlathotep or his worshiper) being hailed as a god in Lovecraftverse's Ancient Egypt.
You insult me!

As someone who is often disappointed by shorts/stories/movies that profess to be 'cosmic horror', I thoroughly enjoyed this. The tone was perfect and the balance of what's shown vs. the feeling of a greater mystery glimpsed was just right.

But to those of us who have, I enjoyed this soft take on Lovecraft, especially with what's implied.

I noticed shadows becoming fuller and darker multiple times. At 2:30 he has huge blisters or boils of some kind on his feet. I'm definitely noticing something working upon him. A classic sign of Eldritch Horror is darkness and physical spoiling of the body. Excellent film, don't let losers who have nothing to show for their efforts in life get you down. You have talent, please keep creating. You gained a sub when I noticed those boils.
This goes by all the rules of cosmic/eldritch horror as well, if I’m honest. One of the largest criticisms of cosmic horror is how difficult it is to visually portray that which has no true form to mortal minds.
it's a tattoo of a fruit, my man. you can see the stem and everything if you go frame-by-frame.
Yeah I'll never understand losers behind keyboards who have the nerve to criticize people while not showing anything that warrants their egotistical rude comments. Similar to when losers online have unconstructive criticisms for fan movies like the one above. Like where the fuck is YOUR fan film huh? Is it that much better? No? Then stfu. Your comment honestly means nothing at that point.
@@lydiaespiritu2752 While I understand that unconstructive criticism is unwarranted, just because a person hasn't produced anything themselves doesn't mean they don't get to have an opinion.
This is merely an ad hominem fallacy. The arguments presented by someone are not invalidated by the character of the person making the criticism or their abilities.
I dont need to be a structural engineer to know a crumbling building is unsafe. I dont need to be a doctor to know a person who has collapsed is likely very ill.
At the end of the day, it doesnt matter what a person has done, their arguments are either good or bad due to the reasoning behind the arguments, not who has made them, it's entirely irrelevant.

Its not u just don't know what nyarlephotep is
I would like to see this story expanded upon. When did Nyarlathotep first appear in Sean's life, and how did Sean react? What did it show him? What's going through his head when he wobbles back and forth? What's happening at the end, when the world literally turns upside down? It's all very intreguing, and I wish there were more.
Thank you for watching! I'm not sure if I'll ever revisit this specific story, but I would like to do a longer form Lovecraft inspired story one day!
Don't know what Nyalethotep gets out of this. This isn't even enough to get a chuckle from him.
This isn't bad filmmaking or anything. My only critique is coming from a fan of Lovecraftian Fiction and that's the representation of Nyarlathotep. Given you don't know have much of a budget and he can take any form really, I'm not mad at him being a black spot. However, in my experience, Nyarlathotep was an exceptional entity because he focused more on spreading madness than death. He also can commune through dreams. So it seemed kind of hard to buy into Nyarlathotep focusing on one guy just so he kills himself rather than making him a vassal to spread more madness.
From a writer's perspective, maybe the protagonist could've been having vivid dreams that started to blend into reality. Visions of the cliff, walking barefoot for miles and losing track of time (gf calls, boss calls). Then, over time, he can't tell the difference, between the dreams and reality, so he stays up for hours, like in your film, as the ever-present shadow grows darker and darker. The final scene culminating as you shot it, but perhaps at the bottom of the cliff is some CGI bottomless swirling abyss that could represent him giving himself to Nyarlathotep or losing himself to the madness permanently.
Either way, the world needs more Lovecraftian film so keep it up!
Don't stare too long into the Abyss, because it stares back at you.
Loved the witty comebacks
The tense feeling throughout this makes the viewer uncomfortable. Eerie.
That was incredible.

Fun fact: Nyarlathotep can alter himself in any shape creature or form he can be a

I liked this, especially the last minute or so; the cliff shot was great. For what looks like one of your first films, this is cool and has some nice atmosphere.
I do think that it needs a little more something, either character development, plot development, or horror elements. With more character or plot development it'd have more of an emotional impact at the end. With more horror elements then you can lean on adrenaline a bit. Some horror either shows or tells too much (or both) but could stand a bit more of both.
Thanks so much for watching! You are correct in assuming that was one of my first shorts haha. I'm glad you thought it was creepy! Thanks for watching! I have new short coming out on 3/12 if you're interested!
Gave it a like because I can see what you're going for, which is a lot to fit into a brief window. Could've used more development, maybe trimming down a couple of the lingering shots and using that time for a rapid pre-influence montage opening before a sudden cut to where you started (to give the audience a better appreciation for the degree of change), but this was a decent showing overall.
I'm not sure what this had to do with Nyarlathotep. It's supposed to be a God who is in the form of a human and manipulates people, one day to bring about the end of the world. This just seemed like a man in depression who eventually commits suicide by jumping off a cliff side. I don't see the correlation, but maybe I need to read more Lovecraft.
This is just an interpretation inspired by the short story. Thank you for watching it!

Alright I really feel like YT has been tricking me into doing things like watching 3 minutes of... just someone... walking and sitting and doing Paranormal Activity stuff. I like lovecraft stuff but this is just like.... a tiny part of a story. Alone it's just an art project or filming exercise.
Ok I'm not going to argue just think about nyarlephoteps behavior ideas and goals. It will make a lot more sense at that point.
@@silvyboi4150 Nyarlathotep doesn't have behaviour ideas or goals.
Actually he does just not in the way that we think of goals. He causes chaos and enjoys pain and dread he manipulates humans in a way that the other Lovecraftian deities dont. The other Lovecraft monster's treat us like ants, we are not important we can't get in the way we are just there. Nyarlephotep is the kid who uses a magnifying glass to burn those ants.
Mm...I see what it was going for, but it didn't quite pull it off. Maybe it was too short. Don't get me wrong, I fully support the idea of a low-budget Nyarlathotep picture. But just one more line from him, or having his line as the last line, would have made the ending feel less sudden. Like, I fully see how it was built up. But the suspense just kind of ends with "And then he died". Giving it a little more impact would have made it more interesting to watch.
My only question is why no one checked if there was anything wrong like if he is dead or injured or something. Just calling him is really shady and cold if you ask me. I mean distance and stuff but someone knowing he hasn't left for a month or so, correct me on this but someone could of physically check on the man not, just call constantly.

Did you not see the shadow object keep popping up near him in the second half of the film? Remember, Nyarlathotep plays on human feelings and emotions. It is clear that the shadowy figure in the film is supposed to be Nyarlathotep.

For all the people saying this isn't an interpretation. An interpretation can be anything your mind makes it be. For example: Some people say The Babadook is a simple demon. Some say the Babadook was more of a ghost. However my personal interpretation of The Babadook is far different. The mother was stressed out, suffering from grief and denial. When she finally got control of herself she put him in the basement (meds and therapy). Just because it's not your interpretation of it doesn't mean it's wrong.
You did it right. Lovecraftian monsters are not giant Kaiju's. They are our inner demons.
Thank you. I agree!
Well actually no. Some are, but Nyarlathotep, Azathoth, Yog-Sothoh, and Cthulhu, are living things. They are Gods. In the Cthulhu mythos I'm talking about, not real life, none of it is truly real to our knowledge as humans although things like it may exist in our universe...it is very big. Although you may choose to relate these to your inner demons, that is not what they truly are.
Raidon Shin wrong. They are living beings that embody human experiences, feelings, and emotions, especially fears and anxieties. They are not reliant upon those for their power, but rather use their power to manipulate and control humans through their experiences, fears, anxieties, desires, etc. They are the unknowns of the world as seen from our minds.
@@DDragon501 Have you read any Lovecraft? If not I encourage you to check them out; hopefully you'd enjoy them. However, the main point of most of his works is that the universe is vast, alien, and largely uncaring of human existence. The things he called gods in his stories were primordial entities that had existed before humanity and would be around long after we were gone. Nyarlathotep was really the only god-thing that paid any real attention to humanity and that's implied to be largely because "he" got sadistic enjoyment out of it. The gods Lovecraft described might not be kaiju but they're sure not humanity's inner demons either.
Edit: the filmmakers may interpret Nyarlathotep as a reflection or representation of mental turmoil and that's completely valid, it's just not representative of the source material.
FUCK YA DUDE
