Basically any Terry Pratchett Discworld book, bust most recently "The Fifth Elephant". Helped me power through the mildly tedious middle of the Wheel of Time.
I found the best way to get out of a reading slump is with short stories, and to mix it up with different genres. I have some recommendations. An Occurrence At Owl Creek Bridge - Ambrose Bierce I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream - Harlan Ellison Enoch - Robert Bloch The Jaunt I Am The Doorway Mrs. Todd's Shortcut - Stephen King Three Hearts and Three Lions - Poul Anderson Rendezvous With Rama - Arthur C. Clarke Pickman's Model - HP Lovecraft Cheers
Whoa I had no idea that GR added how many pages you read to their stats and I'm a GR librarian haha, wow.. that's so neat!! I think the best way to get out of a reading slump is to watch one of your videos, you guys really make reading so cravable, thank you!!
I switch to rereads sometimes during a slump, comfort reads like Wooster and Jeeves / Blandings Castle, or Sherlock Holmes. Warlord Chronicles got me out of a real slump early this year. Michael K Vaughan's videos have really convinced me to dip into Robert E Howard in general, and Conan in particular.
For me it was Eye of the World. I was reading a fantasy my whole life and then I stopped for like 5 years. Then I found this old book I bought in the past but never read it, opened it and dived back into fantasy with WoT. Reignited the love for fantasy!
I'm currently reading We Are The Dead and loving it. Been struggling with a couple of DNF recently (poor mental health = poor concentration), and I'm really happy to be enjoying it. So thank you for all the recommendations. I pretty much only discovered you and your Dad in the last few months, the Bloodsworn books were an amazing introduction. I'm now on a quest to track down more of his books in the local libraries! Cheers guys.
I too love Robin Hobb, also loved The Road by McCarthy as well. Something light and fluffy like a cozy mystery usually gets me out of a slump. I love all genres and Classic literature as well. Fantasy is my latest love.
In the past 5 years as a “reader” I’ve yet to have a true reading slump. I did recently pick up 4 Dan Jones books because of ya’ll. Also, I have recently started wearing flat caps so Ed please provide me with a good flat cap brand and also the jacket brand please.
"Ruin" helped me out of a slump. I had read the first two books early in the year and took a break. I loved them too, but I always find it hard to read through a series non-stop. I didn't read much for about two months and then picked up "Ruin". Now I'm reading regularly again! Great video as always!
Oh! The Last Wish and Sword of Destiny are both good reads. The Blade Itself has been such a fun read. I would like to read Lancelot sooner than later.
The Shadow of The Gods definitely reignited my love for Fantasy again. I can't wait for book three because book two left me in tears. Currently reading The Blade Itself and I'm having a great time.
The last book that took me out from a reading slump was Never Die by Rob. J. Hayes. Fast paced, short, action-packed, accessible prose. I recommend it for anyone who's in a slump. 🙂
Feeling slumpy is always crap, but that feeling you then get when you finally find a book that completely sucks you in again... that's just perfection!! I totally agree with Rooney, Hobb and We Are the Dead! I was actually feeling quite slumpy recently and decided to finally tackle the Fitz and the Fool trilogy... it's been a week and now I am about to finish Assassin's Fate, completely binged this trilogy like nobody's business!! And I find The War for the Rose Throne also an amazing slump breaker series! Same for all the books in the Banished Lands to be honest, I read all 7 of them back-to-back in a month, haha. Great recs guys, loved this video :)))
On the one hand, you recommend both of my mortal enemies, Cormac McCarthy and Sally Rooney (the Sauron & Saruman of my reading life), but on the other hand, you recommend not only Conan but the Dark Horse run of Conan! I swear, one half the time I cheer this channel, and the other half the time I want to send you a box of scorpions!
I have that same conan book, and it pretty much prepped me to read malazan and all the other fantasy books i’ve read so far. I need to get the other 2 volumes.
The Warrior by Stephen Aryan got me out of a slump earlier this summer. Becky Chambers' Wayfarers books have shaken me out of slumps before. As have Akata Witch by Nnedi Okorafor and The Last Gifts of the Universe by Rory August.
Dren was my favourite also. Him and Ralassis. Such a good series. Faithful and fallen got me out of a reading slump but then caused me to go into another one when i finished and couldn’t find anything else to compare
Hi 👋 thank you for ur great video! Reading slump for me is wen I have DNFS books.... then I have to go through my old books which I have not read then I get out of my reading slump!! Happy reading to you both!! 🦋🍂🍃
Assassin’s Apprentice is the perfect book for a reading slump. The trouble is it opens up thousands more pages of the series you need to read as soon as possible!
Couldn't agree more with The First Law Trilogy and Assassin's Apprentice! I am in the final book of the Farseer Trilogy and the characters, world, and story truly feel alive. Robin Hobb has a talent that I wish I had. Next month I'm planning on picking up The Road, I haven't decided yet whether do listen as an audiobook or read it physically. Great video!
Hello, book friends. I have been feeling slumpy all week about everything. Maybe it's the weather. I just need to land on something that can make me laugh and that should help.
This was another great video. The two of you have definitely become a new favourite booktube channel of mine. I totally agree with The Blade Itself being an amazing book to help you get out of a reading slump. When I read it last year I automatically wanted to continue on with the trilogy. Joe Abercrombie definitely does have an amazing sense of humor and is one of my favourite parts of his books. The Farseer trilogy was the book series that got me out of my reading slump this year and the fantasy slump I had been experiencing. It is a new favourite series of mine with Royal Assassin and Assassins Quest being two out of the four books that I have given five stars this year. After reading it all I wanted to do was binge the rest of the series so it made me buy all of the books in the Realm of the Elderlings. I still haven't continued on with it which I need to do so badly.
To quote a certain favourite television character of mine, "I accept your premise, I reject your conclusion" 😄. Just kidding, great video. Though some of the books you showed weren't "favourites", I can see how they would get someone reading again. Not so much a particular book but my all-time comfort read author is Agatha Christie. Can reread her books any number of times, even though I know what happens or the solution is meh.
My hubby loved the witcher games so we bought the box set of the books to read. I'm a quicker reader so I began reading them and he followed. I was nearing the end of the series and he was struggling with Sword of Destiny so I was like "Yeah, DNF this series babe, if you're not feeling the short stories, the novels will kill your love of reading 😂!"
The Gentleman Bastard series by Scott Lynch always activates my reading bug. The three currently released books are a yearly read for me. ASOIAF by GRRM is also on that list. The Road by Cormac McCarthy Anything Cosmere by Brandon Sanderson, but I tend to lean toward Stormlight Archive The Expanse by James S.A. Corey The Hobbit and LOTR by J.R.R. Tolkien Napoleon by Andrew Roberts Duma Key, Revival, Cujo, 11/22/63, etc by Stephen King Not all of those are yearly reads, but they have all helped me out of slumps before. I can definitely see Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir becoming one of those as well. It was my favorite book of 2021 until Leviathan Falls came out to end The Expanse series.
Oh no, Sally Rooney... I read Normal People last year and it made my list of worst books of the year. Here are a couple of my suggestions: Lynch's The Lies of Locke Lamora and Backman's Anxious People.
What books ended your reading slumps?

@@martintoni7557 I read The Shadow of the Gods recently which got me out of a reading slump. Can always rely on Papa Gywnne.
