454 Engine Swap: Harmonic Balancer Install/Pinning and Engine Accessories (78 Firebird Ep.31)

  • Опубликовано: 30 сен 2024
  • It is time to get back to working on the setup of the engine itself, and this episode is covering the selection and install of the engine accessories. Specifically, we'll install the balancer/crank pulley, water pump, alternator, and power steering pump and get the pulleys into alignment. This took a lot of fiddling to get just right so we will try to cover everything we can all at once and move onto other problems that need solving next time.
    Timeline of filming: May 21st, 2020 - October 20th, 2020
Song List (Order of First Appearance):
0:01 On My Way Home - The 126ers
6:02 Birds in Flight - Dan Lebowitz
    11:49 Traveller - The 126ers
    16:24 Mama's Whisper - The 126ers

This episode started as two but I wasn't happy with the pace so a bunch got cut out and re-edited, which is why it took an extra week to come out. This should more or less be the template for the next few episodes, there is a lot of back and fourth and test fitting that is difficult to get through without being repetitive, but the process is important too. I think there are four episodes until the engine gets to go into the car, but there is still a ton after that before we get to hear it run. I feel a little in over my head with this video series, but we'll get through it. Thanks for sticking around, it really means a lot!

Me too! I was cruising YT back when I was getting ready to rebuild my first engine. Even though others might've gone deeper into the build, especially when I started to get discouraged because of all the specialty tools and huge workshops, FDP made it feel like it was possible, even in my garage. I did end up buying a few tools for it, but not many, and now my big SUV runs like a champ.

You may want to keep a careful eye on your water pump bolt torque in the future. The way the factory power steering pump mounting works doesn't apply load directly to the water pump mounting bolts. You've created a slip plane between those bolt heads and the bracket that the power steering pump is going to be constantly cycling against and _might_ become a bolt-loosening machine.
It _might_ also work just fine. 🤷‍♂😆
