I was so moved when Raeen felt grateful for a girl from a distant country who he never met or heard about for making the video and giving them the gift of learning about life in that distant land. What I heard about vitamine-D is that it is one reasons nations living under sharp sun tend to have darker skin and nations with less direct sunlight tend to have lighter skin. While dark skin protects the skin from direct sunlight far better, light skin is far more effective in producing vitamin-D. That is why northern nations have lighter skin (they have less sunlight). There is an exception to this rule and those are innuit people, their skin is not so light and not as good in producing vitamine-D from less sunlight but they get it mainly from their food as it is almost all fatty meat rich in vitamine-D.
Light skinned person in sub-saharan Africa (or South America) would need protection to not be constantly burned by sun (and develop for example skin cancer), in the opposition - dark person in very northern (or very southern) parts of world generates only about 1/5 amount of Vitamine-D (his skin is too protective there) and needs to supply himself with Vitamine-D by other means (consuming lots of fatty meat or take Vitamine-D directly as food supplement).
BTW: Sarru gets that perfectly, why there is polar day and polar night. Awesome!

A big driving factor in darker skin is preventing skin cancer in places with heavy sun. Skin cancer can kill very young, which makes it a fast evolutionary pressure because they won’t have children. It’s the number one killing disease in people under 30 in many countries because people have moved to parts of the world where those that evolved there have very dark skin. Like Australia for instance.

Vitamin D, especially D3 or lack of it is the precursor to osteoporosis from approximately halfway up France to the North Pole. The lack of sunlight in winter dictates that most of us at higher latitudes (I'm in NE Scotland) take vitamin D3 not only during winter but all year round to ensure absorption of calcium. I spent most of my life working outdoors and I'm 62 years old now but in 2014 I fell and broke a hip in Tahiti. It's only then that people like me find out that we have osteoporosis; when we break something.

Im Swedish and many years ago when i was in school we had a principal and some teachers visiting from India because we had some collaboration between the schools, me and a few others showed them around and when we where almost done i asked them if they have seen snow and their eyes got big, this was summer during summer but we have had a icehockeyrink that is active year around and they dump the rests outside when they clean the ice. Ill tell you they where around 50 years old but when i we showed them how to make snowballs they became children :) A nice memory.

There is a certain calm happiness that comes upon a person when it's night time and it gets dark. It often seems to happen around ten in the evening, when the Sun is running a "normal" day-night-cycle. You can see it in people when they get relaxed and happy in the evenings, even people who are in a bad mood all day, easily let go of their anxiousness in the evening. I think it's the body's way of preparing for rest and sleep, maybe melatonin has something to do with it. Living in Finland, next to Sweden, I live in very long nights in winter-time and I find that this night-time drowsy happiness is a feeling that's very useful in keeping up your mental health in the darkness.
Usually you only get it in the evening, though, even if it's dark already in the day. But I lived a year in the night-time once, after graduating from school, and found that if you sleep the day and stay awake the night, you can live through the whole winter without seeing any light of day and be light-hearted and happy about the darkness like you were meant to live in it. If I could set my own work schedule, I would always live night-time waking schedule in the winter and day-time in summer, only seeing light for half a year and then seeing dark for half a year by turn. :D

I do this - just skip the sunlight entirely in winter. Springtime is really the hardest for me because the change is so rapid to sunlight, and I get incredibly restless and unable to both sleep properly and stay awake and alert.

@@Reicha How is your experience when living in the dark period? Do you find it's emotionally different from the light time? Different thoughts, do motivations seem to work differently?

This may be one of the best videos in this series. It's obvious that the villagers are greatly impressed, the same as the rest of us.

This video made my day! Your channel is my favorite RUclips channel and this fine reaction to a great video about my country was really joyful. P.s.. If you worked together with a Swedish film maker (like Jonna) and maybe got some financing from a hotel, or resort, maybe you could come and try ice bathing under the northern lights and make a documentary about that. It is truly possible and I think both you and everyone involved would love that.
...or the midsummer sun, if the cold scares too much. 😅

Ohhhhhhh... ;:happy sigh:: Beautiful. Part of my ancestry is Swedieh, and I love the night. 😍 Here in Oregon it's rainy in winter, and gets dark around 4 p.m., and the sun rises around 7 a.m. In summer, it'll stay light until close to 10 p.m., so we see lots of that pink light Sarru mentioned. In the morning, too. The clouds can turn rose gold as the sun rises. This video made me happy, and so did their reactions! Thank you for such a beautiful experience.
