Yountville Veterans' Home Summer BBQ Party 2024

On Saturday, July 20, 2024, DAV Chapter 48 hosted a summer barbecue party at the Veterans’ Home in Yountville, along with the help of volunteers from other local DAV Chapters and Auxiliaries. We fed about 200 people (residents and volunteers) and served hamburgers, hotdogs, potato salad, chili, corn on the cob, watermelon, and freshly baked brownies while enjoying live music by the Doc Kraft Band. Several residents gave positive feedback, commenting that it was the best BBQ they had been to, second only to Chef Guy Fieri’s hosted BBQ.
Special guests included Congressman Mike Thompson, Mayor of Yountville Margie Mohler, DAV state Commander Joseph Skoda from Santa Maria, DAV Auxiliary Commander David Bailey from Rohnert Park, state Sr. Vice Commander Armando Hernandez from Visalia, and former National and State Commander Delphine Metcalf-Foster from Vallejo.
Community activities, such as the annual barbecue, play a vital role in the well-being of veterans' home residents. These events foster social connections, combat loneliness, boost mental health, and enhance happiness. They provide a sense of purpose and belonging, essential for a fulfilling life in retirement facilities. However, these activities can only thrive with the support of dedicated volunteers.
Each Chapter & Unit that participated in the event received a heartfelt letter from one of the residents sharing with us their gratitude for hosting the barbecue for them which is included in this compilation.
