Cartels are much worse and dangerous. Besides usa law enforcement can cease out gangs if allow from the feds or government, but can't since it would be considered racist. If cartels are labeled as racist group you bet your shet they get cease out (just look up matamoro incident where cartel apologized for messing with "oppressive" groups).

Wow I heard the narrative of this podcast and it was filled with a lot of insight. However I do want to make one clarification. It is insane to think a government will practice the philosophy that "...if we leave the cartels alone they will stop the violence in Mexico." No, "Abrazos no balazos," refers to identifying the root causes as to why young man make a decision to join a cartel v.s. following the path of education and progress for himself and his family. It is about giving hope to a new generation. Which is an ongoing process and it is working. Eventually this will reflect in a society that has been devastated by the consumption of narcotics in the US combined with the accessibility of heavy weapons being sold to the criminal groups.

im from culiacan, everything is peaceful here, no robery or anyone getting out their lane whatsoever, evrybody knows better, by the way 66 ppl got picked up recently, but it was becaused they started to do things that were not allowed ( breaking in houses n steal goods) those directly responsible after being interrogated were killed on the spot, those who had clearance were released, out of them only a small fraction got killed (around 15 ppl for this misconduct). while i dnt think murder was a suitable punishment for the crime, the message is clear for the rest of the ppl not to even consider they can get away even with petty misbehavior, cartel has eyes n ears where u least expect, so whatever fucked up thing u do n makes the rest of the pp feel outraged, best believe you will be held accountable real soon, it doesnt matter if u a high-ranked in the organization, if u overstep u done. Untouchable nini is a good example of that.

The "hugs, not bullets" stance is a strategic approach by AMLO to provide opportunities for youth, preventing them from being lured by narcos. He recognizes that these narcos are also Mexicans who were driven into this work due to the lack of opportunities stemming from the failed neoliberal policies imported from the U.S. By avoiding a war with the cartels, the Mexican government can focus on developing the country instead of being drawn into an unwinnable conflict. This highlights the issue of bringing in someone who lacks a deep understanding of the situation, resulting in an oversimplified explanation based on superficial knowledge.

Remodeling poor neighborhoods, scholarship to study, a paid internship for over a year in any place. Not even lying close to the truth but stating the opposite is. Truth doesn't care for this guy, it's an obstacle for him not a resource. He say it with conviction I'll admit that.
