- The federal government has proposed a cost-of-living relief package, that will wipe $3 billion from three million Australians' HECS debt. It will also change how university loan schemes will be indexed.
University graduate Leanne Cremin joins us.

More of Labor throwing workers money at those who don't work.
This is like a shop putting up prices (indexation) and then give a discount. Fake goodwill.
How often is albo going to follow the ideas of Joe Biden 🤔
Because they are good ideas unlike trump and his thugs
@@surendrasathappan8479 We followed trumps ideas too. What do you think Job Keeper was??
Australia pretty much follows every US policy regardless of politics, and you would do better to be less political as well.
@@MrFastFarmer what r u saying every country gave stimulus packages during Covid
@@surendrasathappan8479 lol you enjoy inflation 😂😂😂
The all take their orders from someone else. They don't actually care about the people.
So let me understand this you’re getting rid of student debt and putting up taxes?
Not even close student debt still going up :) it's just slightly less steep lol
Yeah who's going to pay for this free ride
Of course. The doctors, lawyers & politicians aren't going to be able to pay their debt themselves.
"Get rid of fees". Nothing is free.
Yes, either user pays or taxpayers pay. Over 700,000 foreign students paying $6billion in fees in 2024 not enough to keep Australian universities viable? Only 3 other exports from Australia generate more revenue than education.
Woo hoo more inflation, im so excited 😐😒
I paid off MY HECS debt, now i have to pay THIERS as well????
Exactly!!!! And their " degrees" were in total Bovine Proctolgy , they never intended to work in the field of study , it was just a free lifestyle for them heyyy I'm a student.
Omg every student is still going to be paying off their initial student loan! The government added indexation of 7% last year ontop of every student debt. This adjustment means students will only pay 3%. The government is still earning tax from Australian students, just not as much as before.

Omg, someone doesn't understand how economics works.
@@BurnerAccount3 Oh please do share some insights. I seem to be unaware that Australian tax payers have been paying off HECS debts for students this whole time
Not sure why some university graduates are getting hand-outs while others who maybe took up a trade or something are not getting anything.
Will Australia now pay off the Australian students debts who studied in NZ unis, borrowed money in nz and skipped NZ back to Australia
Charge foreign students more to subsidise aussie students education.
Review salaries of academics. Most vice-chancellors earn twice what the Prime Minister does.
Australian universities already depend on the foreign students paying upfront to attend in order to remain viable. Every one of them takes the place of a possible Australian placement. 713,144 international students in Australia this year, worth close to $6 billion to Australia universities. And over 5x that amount in revenue to the Australian economy. Making education our 4th highest export earner in total. And that is down on pre covid numbers! 😮💰
They ALREADY DO!! That's why our higher education is much cheaper than USA
Wonder how many academics or academic's administrators are gonna respond to this comment...
Wrong terminology unless you did University qualifications before 2003-04 Budget Year. As that is when it got renamed FEE-HELP
Who was at uni when they introduced hecs. Ive used my hecs debt as a line of credit. Every cent i ever paid in hecs i took back in loans. As a result i never paid one red cent back, about 11 grand worth of heccs
Caping indexation at WPI short changes the tertiary sector and may fuel job losses. Unless Albos got another revenue stream for universities they may be forced to increase the overall costs of degrees which will further aggravate the 12 year current low in domestic enrolments at Australian Universities. Again these band aid solutions won’t cut it. The only way to address inflation is reducing excess demand which at this point comes from migration and the gas cartel.
Lol what? Hecs debt is owed to the government, not universities. The unis already got paid in full for the degree, it's the government that is not going to be making as much in interest
@@benchinny-ev3xe how much you payback is how much gets paid to the universities by the government. The government isn’t going to subsidise the difference between the cpi and wpi. That’s not debt that the federal government wants on their books. The reductions will be passed on one way or another and the Uni incomes will take the hit meaning they will need to raise the price paid for courses which will raise the overall cost for the degree from the outset. This will in turn make universities less accessible to domestic students.
This is once more adding to inflation Albo. Not your money to give. Trades are suffering while the universities make the money, for few jobs on exit and still can’t manage without indoctrination money tied to middle east donations. The antisemitic problem here manufactured from the University Faculty is in what they teach and the PM/PWong duo is a product of that.
😂😂 1200 dollars of interest don't Go out and buy a home
They need to get rid of tuition fees altogether like in the Nordic countries. Students there just pay admin fees. Tax rates may be higher but they still outrank Australia in the IHDI and Happiness Index.
In 2024 Australia has over 700,000 international students paying $6b in upfront fees to attend universities here. Still not enough money? Albeit, those numbers are down on pre covid years. Still, education is Australia's 4th highest export earner.
Universities are expensive to run. If everything is free then students will over-consume like the one with a $90k debt that has only paid off $2k in five years - she must have done a PhD but is now just working at a low salary or something.
@@zen1647 You need to explain how the Nordic countries are outperforming our quality of life indicators whilst offering free education. Expensive is relative and our tax dollars are wasted on many things.
It should have paid out by the government not the pathetic reduction
Paid out by the government? That's paid for by taxpayers , paid for by me . There is no such thing as government money only our taxpayer money. I don't want to pay for these hippies free ride
The government doesn't pay out anything, you're asking the tax payer to pay it out.
Absolutely not. That would be completely unfair and and bad use of taxpayer's money.
Get rid of fees! it just makes institutions richer!
You talk like a fantasy socialist. Who do you think pays the cost if we " get rid of fees"
@@lancehobbs8012 And you support OUR POLITICIANS who GOTTEN THEIR EDUCATION FOR FREE? Paying money for education doesn't mean the quality is going to be great, coming from experience, HIGH FEES for that matter is not worth it when they teach you out dated material. You support communism by the sounds of things mate. If so move to a place that has it and you'll feel right at home.
