I love Ramsey, but I really disagree with paying off the smallest debt. That doesn't give me any psychological boost at all. I owed 19k on my truck and $450 a month. 3 months worth of work and I paid it off, and it feels amazing. I just paid the minimum on credit cards. Knocking out my second biggest debt (home first) really has given my energy and hope!

Dang. This gives me some motivation. Because I have 14k left on my car/ pay 450 monthly. I can afford it 3x but I just think of the savings or investment I can do with an extra 450 monthly , never mind the high gas, and insurance. I’m considering selling but I like my car and It’s truly one of the nicest ones I’ve had. I’m tempted to just get a simple 7k used car just for a year or two- save rigorously, improve credit and achieve some goals for that time and then upgrade properly.
I owe 18000 on my 16 Audi A6, been paying it off for a year. Just got a new job tho so plan to drop 2000 on it every month for now on.

I was always taught that you only buy cars two ways. First and best choice is a cash car. 2nd choice, if you have to finance, If you can pay it in under 2 years while having all your bills covered then you can afford it. Even tho i usually keep my vehicles 10-12years I dont think Ill ever buy a new car again.
There's no trick to paying off a car early and he doesn't say anything of true value. The trick is to get more money and make extra payments

Listen back in 2018 I needed a car for the fire academy and I got my own car but I was surprised and embarrassed that my credit was awful because of repossession on my dads car back in 2017 and I cosign on his car with him( very big mistake) cause I guilt tripped into it and the dealership lied to us saying that I could take my name off after a year which wasn't true but I didn't do my own research. Back to my car I got hit was 18% interest and 72 months so I was paying 394.30 a month and I started paying more in the first year but now I'm in the 3rd year and I have $8330 left so I said I gotta kill this bill, in the month of March I've paid $8000 on it tomorrow I'm gonna see the final charge. This was a hard lesson for me to learn never cosign with anyone but the person you marry and im just grateful im paying it 3 years early cause the final payment is due April 2024

What's the difference between saving $500/month for 5 years to pay $30,000 cash, vs making a payment of $500/month for 5 years? I get it if you have a 10% interest rate, but if you have a 1-2% interest rate I'd rather have the cash available or invest it.
My interest rate is 1.9 and I’m paying $489 a month and trying to figure out a way to lower my payments by making a large lump some payment to my principal and make a big payment on my actual monthly payments
And to add to this...after you're done paying off your car dedicate at least the next 3 months or so to depositing that "payment" into a HYSA so you're ready for maintenance and repair costs. Then make sure that extra money is working for you and you're not burning through it.

Here in 2024 watching this to decide if I should sell my 2 year old car and buy a cash car (using the equity I have after paying off the current auto loan bc thankfully I was making extra principal payments since purchasing it!) - on that note let me go make another principal payment on it now! thanks for your timeless value videos!

You missed it. You're supposed to ADD that amount($300÷12) to your monthly payment of $300 so at the end of the year you've added an extra payment.

That 0.02% isn't significant. Pay the car off, get out of debt, build your 6-months emergency fund, then invest.

I got a charger. I already paid off months of payments and my interest rate is so low. I just want to own it and never sell it. I love my car too much to let it go and let someone else ride him.

If your interest rate is low enough it might actually make sense to keep the loan and invest in stocks that will get you a higher interest. 7% stock return - 4% vehicle loan interest = 3% gain from keeping a loan!
Are you a millionaire? With a car loan? Hmm. You are suggesting that people already in debt would invest and that just seems silly to me. Sounds like a gambling problem.
angel0island0ninja I’m not a millionaire but my investments make more money than my vehicle loan costs. It would benefit people to put $1,000 into stocks returning 7% than on their loan costing 4%. You don’t have to get a new loan but if you have one already that would make the most sense.
My car loan is 2.9, Im getting 2.45 in my money market. I can payoff the car today, however the payment is only 12% of take home pay and roughy half percentage interest spread is not worth it from an opportunity cost perspective. My total interest on that half percentage is like 140 bucks for the whole year. 3 year loan and tons of equity.
Daniel B I agree that’s not worth the effort at all. But it seems the problem is with the return on the money market fund, not the loan. That is a low return on investment and doesn’t even outpace inflation most years. Do you have an aversion to index funds?
Daniel Iles None. That money market is my emergency fund. So I keep it safe. I keep it at 100k at all times. 3 year emergency fund. I have Asperger’s, so I have to keep things in life simple and excessively stress free from a biochemical level. Every penny I bring in after monthly expenses goes to Roth and regular brokerage. I put 21% into my 401k, 15% me the other 6% is dollar for dollar match of my employer all immediately vested. I make about 80k gross from my job, dividends, interest and capital gains both short and long all together. Live well below my means, bring in 80k but I can live on 33k easily.
I will pay down on my car debt 13k after I pay off my credit cards since they have more interest than my car APR which is 4.5%. Highest credit card APR is 27% with 33k of debt. I'm so ready to be out of debt within the next 2 years. That's my goal while saving for a wedding 😆
