hacker:HUNTER "Cashing In", Episode 1: Jackpotting

  • "ATMs hold cash, and that makes them attractive for criminals." The opening statement of this episode sums up what the whole mini-series is about. While criminals around the world try to get to the money in cash-machines with hammers, explosives, excavators or other heavy gear, the Carbanak gang found a more elegant and stealth way. They would hack into bank networks and monitor the activities there until they understood how to trigger the machines remotely to spill out all the money.
Episode 1 explains how security researchers were alerted to it, how they brought international police forces into the investigation and why the method of attacking ATMs is called Jackpotting after a researcher named Barnaby Jack.

While they are cetainly capable in that industry it would be a severe misteake for those involved to turn black, think of it like registering a firearm, your purchase is recorded and your on a federal list, if you end up using your weapon with a malicious intent ballistics and purchase records will basically lead straight to you ... When you learn this skills set and go through the appropriate channels to acquire the foundational knowledge to be considered a legitimate working white hat in the industry you end up putting yourself on such a list which the FBI regularly scans through when they go looking for cyber criminals who actively operating against the law, I believe some of the most capable black hats out there who operate with such impunity learned it on there own and spent years doing so not making a fuss about it so i believe it very well could be your neighbors, teens in school etc ... in fact the person responsible for unleasing the ILOVEYOU computer virus that became a catastrophic nightmare causing billions in corporate damage that even got the US military involved was designed by a college student in the Philippines, he used regular old fashion phishing techniques to initiate the disaster, he wrote a thesis about the design of his program before opting out to set it into motion and he did so simply out of curiosity, some of the brightest minds in computer literacy are those without a traditional path in cyber security, the FBI is consistently looking to recruit black hats because they know that these are people who operate outside of the scope of traditional methods.

Thing is, all bank notes have serial numbers tied to them. If we can devise a system that helps us trace which bank notes leave an ATM, then it can help us find the culprit.
I know this isn't the most accurate method because it will always lead us to a person that the thief associated with rather than the thief themselves, but at least we'll have a bunch of solid leads vs a cold trail. If we can catch the person on camera for even a second, we have won.

Anyone can also '' hack" atms if you have console access while it's open. In the real world its not that simple. Firstly you need to pen the net its on, then backdoor the atm(which can't be that hard concidering the majority of them are xp based) . Even at that you'd still need to be lucky and hope there's no Lan segmentation and/or vlan hopping required to traverse. Then comes payload.. Most hardware devices have been fingerprinted/hashed, any application or code not signed would automatically be blocked. Everything is possible, but without detection.. A lot harder than they make out.. Pfff but what do I know..

And then back to informing the banks of the ATM hack without ever explaining anything about the exploits or the process of investigating the group(s?) responsible. I feel like they cut away a lot of footage to have eight minutes of people talking about "cool hacker things", leaving the story impossible to follow.
