    Farewell, Bryan Magee. The man who made philosophy accessible to many, many of us. I believe his contribution to human thought is immense- because he was the first to provide the link between the academics and the public. That was underestimated in importance in his lifetime.

    The dialogue is THE only way!!!! We must all write dialogue if you have the courage, wisdom and moderation. Sadly there are few who fit this bill. Please prove me wrong and answer "What is Justice"!!! All those Oxford and Ivy league graduates make us proud!

    I like this guy. He gets it. I would tie it on with this dude, few beers and a scotch to get the symposium going, finally a good debate on something. Not many like this.

    I actually didn't think you were a troll until now. If you are, that is the most epic trolling I've ever come across and I express to you sincere admiration.

    For what it's worth, Plato is my favorite philosopher. Easily.

    they are... but they were a beginning for a reasoned approach for realizing and interpreting the world around us.

    "They have something of which they are proud. And what do they call that which makes them proud? Education they call it; it distinguishes them from goatherds... 'Formerly all the world was insane' -- the finest ones say, blinking. One is clever & knows everything that has happened, so there is no end to their mockery... 'We have invented happiness' say the Last Men, and they blink."

    I think Plato's philosophy was basically wrong. But I think his ideas were interesting and presented in a way that is a joy to read. That's why Plato is my favorite.

    Aristotle was the first great codifier of the laws of logic and it was not until the 19th century c.e. that Aristotle's work on logic was surpassed.

    Wait. He says none of the writings of the pre-Socratics have come down to us - not true! No complete texts, maybe, but there are fragments.

    • @Qscrisp
      @Qscrisp 9 лет назад +1

      ***** Once a copy is made, it's second hand, that doesn't mean that it's not the text as written. Among the fragments compiled by Hermann Diels, the B-fragments are all direct quotations from the writings of these philosophers. As long as the scholarship here is sound, this means that the writing have come down to us... Oh wait, you're saying no complete works, but I already said that. No complete texts. That's right. As I said, but no complete texts is not the same as "none of the writings", which is what he says in the video.

      i think what he means by "none of the writings" is no primary sources

    How do we know Plato existed? Aristotle said he was his student and others give their accounts.. that is evidence. There's a statue bust that has been date verified. There's the fact that there are neo-platonists and it seems more likely, from analyzing their work, that they were first influenced by writings written by their namesake.

    @alexaiv Is the BBC supposed to be for profit? Public broadcasting seems terrified of losing ground. The Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation recently started a show that was supposed to be about visual culture in general, but they seem to be most interested in fashion and trends (for example an entire episode on "the hipster").

    Plato wasnt talking about a political state he was talking about the inner workings of the individual. not literal philosopher kings, metaphorical kings, the being within us that can recognize all our strengths and faults and decide correctly how to harmonize mind, body and soul. He was using metaphors.
